ABSTRACT - The main objective of this study is to quantify and model the effects of surface plant residues on different components of soil water dynamics, including water storage capacity, water evaporation, soil cover and solar radiation interception. For this purpose, representative samples of crop residue mulches from maize, millet and soybean were utilized. The results showed that a mulch of millet or maize represents a slightly higher potential for water storage: 3,26 and 3,24g H2O.g-1 DM versus 2,62 g H2O.g-1 DM for soybean. Water losses from wet mulches were proportional to the potential evapotranspiration. An amount of 3,5 t/ha of plant residues represented respectively 70%, 65% and 63% of soil cover for maize, soybean and millet. The three types of mulch intercepted similar quantities of PAR and IR radiation. However, a mulch of maize straw was slightly more efficient in intercepting radiation than that of millet or soybean. The resulting mathematical equations can be incorporated into crop growth simulation models.
