We assayed five seed species of forage grasses, namely: Hay Buffel, Rhodes, Brizantha, Mulatto II and Tanzania. Under both conditions six concentrations of potassium chloride (KCl) were evaluated and then adjusted to electrical conductivities expressed as decisiemens/meter (dS/m). Treatments evaluated were: T1= Control (distilled water), T2= 5 dS/m, T3= 10 dS/m, T4= 15 dS/m, T5= 20 dS/m and T6= 25 dS/m. The variables analyzed were: Seed germination capacity (GC) by using a vigour test; Germination velocity index (GVI), Emergency velocity index (EVI), Plumule length average (PLA); Radicle length average (RLA) and Plantlet dry weight (PDW). The information obtained was analyed using a completely randomized design with a factorial arrangement and four replications; we used the statistical package SAS, version 6.0 (1989). Results indicated significant differences between grass species, since the observed responses in both environments were in high disparity among the studied variables. Also highly significant differences were detected among plant species, due to the fact that when they were subjected to increasing saline concentrations, there was a direct adverse effect on germination and seeds vigor. These results promoted an increasing number of seeds without germination hability and abnormal seedlings, likewise when we compared the results obtained under laboratory and greenhouse conditions, we arrived to the conclusion that the most tolerant species to the effect of induced salinity were Tanzania and Brizantha seeds, because they resulted less affected on germination and vigor when were grown in highly saline soil"
