The effect of regrouping on productive performance, welfare indicators and antimicrobial usage in weaners and growers

This study aimed to investigate the effects of mixing pigs at weaning on productive performance, welfare indicators (body lesions), and health (antimicrobial use (AMU) and mortality). Data from 576 piglets were analyzed in two trials conducted between March and August 2023 on an experimental farm, using three treatments: intact litters (IL), mixed litters (MX), and mixed litters with hospital treatment (MH) for piglets that required antibiotics. Productive performance, measured by weight gain throughout the growth cycle, showed no significant differences between the groups, with p-value exceeding 0.05 at both weighing periods (44 and 113 days), indicating that litter mixing did not adversely affect weight gain. However, piglets in mixed litters showed a significantly higher incidence of ear lesions within the first 24 hours post-weaning (p < 0.001), a result of increased agonistic behaviors as new social hierarchies were established. Tail biting incidence showed no significant differences among groups (p > 0.05), suggesting that tail biting behaviors may be influenced by factors other than litter mixing, such as environmental enrichment, space allocation, and resource access. In terms of health, no significant differences in antimicrobial use (p > 0.05) or mortality rates (p > 0.05) were observed across treatment groups. This suggests that effective lesion management and appropriate medical care helped control infection risks associated with aggressive interactions. These findings imply that, although litter mixing may initially increase stress and aggression among piglets, these effects are largely temporary and do not significantly impact long-term growth, health, or the need for antimicrobial treatments. The study highlights the potential to implement litter mixing with proper management practices to balance operational efficiency with animal welfare and sustainable production goals

RESUMO – O EFEITO DO REAGRUPAMENTO NO DESEMPENHO PRODUTIVO, NOS INDICADORES DE BEM-ESTAR E NA UTILIZAÇÃO DE ANTIMICROBIANOS EM LEITÕES DESMAMADOS E EM CRESCIMENTO - Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar os efeitos da mistura de leitões no desmame sobre o desempenho produtivo, indicadores de bem-estar (lesões corporais) e saúde (uso de antimicrobianos (AMU) e mortalidade). Os dados de 576 leitões foram analisados em dois ensaios conduzidos entre março e agosto de 2023 numa exploração experimental, utilizando três tratamentos: ninhadas intactas (IL), ninhadas misturadas (MX) e ninhadas misturadas com tratamento hospitalar (MH) para leitões que necessitavam de antibióticos. O desempenho produtivo, medido pelo ganho de peso ao longo do ciclo de crescimento, não apresentou diferenças significativas entre os grupos, com valor de p-value superior a 0,05 nos dois momentos de pesagem (44 e 113 dias), indicando que a mistura de ninhadas não afetou negativamente o ganho de peso. No entanto, os leitões em ninhadas misturadas apresentaram uma incidência significativamente maior de lesões na orelha nas primeiras 24 horas pós-desmame (p < 0,001), resultado do aumento de comportamentos agonísticos à medida que novas hierarquias sociais eram estabelecidas. A incidência de mordedura de cauda não apresentou diferenças significativas entre os grupos (p > 0,05), sugerindo que esse comportamento pode ser influenciado por outros fatores além da mistura de ninhadas, como enriquecimento ambiental, espaço disponível e acesso a recursos. Em termos de saúde, não foram observadas diferenças significativas no uso de antimicrobianos (p > 0,05) ou nas taxas de mortalidade (p > 0,05) entre os grupos. Isso sugere que o maneio eficaz das lesões e os cuidados médicos adequados ajudaram a controlar os riscos de infeção associados às interações agressivas. Esses achados indicam que, embora a mistura de ninhadas possa inicialmente aumentar o stress e a agressividade entre os leitões, esses efeitos são em grande parte temporários e não impactam significativamente o crescimento a longo prazo, a saúde ou a necessidade de tratamentos antimicrobianos. O estudo destaca o potencial de implementar a mistura de ninhadas com práticas de maneio adequadas para equilibrar a eficiência operacional com o bem-estar animal e os objetivos de produção sustentável
