Characterisation of eco-geographic environment of discovered wildly growing grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) in Georgia.
2023
The study of the wildly growing Eurasian grapevine Vitis vinifera L. has an important place in the history of viticulture in Europe and Georgia. This interest is due to the attempt to explain the domestication processes of the European vine Vitis vinifera L. and to clarify the origins of cultivated varieties in the context of the centuries-old development of viticulture. The research for genetic connections between wild and cultivated vines acquires special attention in this aspect, which provides very interesting results in old viticulture-winemaking countries like Georgia. Also, wildly growing grapevines with ampelographic traits of cultivated grapevines could be an interesting topic for the selection of similar genotypes for cultivation or breeding purposes. This paper reviews eight forms of wildly growing grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) found in the wild environment of Eastern and Western Georgia since 2003, having many ampelographic traits of cultivated vines. The results provide information about the geographical location of the descovered plants, documentation via Geographic Positioning Systems (GPS), exposure, altitude above sea level, affiliation with the river basins, soil types, climatic belts, support trees and plant species around of them.
