RESUMO - Características morfogênicas e estruturais do "Panicum maximum" cv. Mombaça foram avaliadas em parcelas experimentais de 1,0 x 1,6 m onde foram testadas duas alturas de corte (25 e 50 cm) no período de 22/03 a 29/05/02. As características avaliadas foram: taxa de aparecimento e alongamento de folhas, comprimento final da lâmina foliar, densidade populacional de perfilhos, duração de vida das folhas, número de folhas vivas por perfilho e altura do dossel. Verificou-se o efeito das alturas de corte na duração de vida das folhas e na altura média do dossel. Para as demais variáveis não foram observadas diferenças significativas. O corte a 25 cm pode ter proporcionado uma renovação de tecidos mais rápida provavelmente devido ao encurtamento do tamanho da bainha, resultando em menor duração de vida das folhas. ABSTRACT - Morphogenic and structural traits of Mombacagrass “Panicum maximum” were evaluated in 1.0 x 1.6 m experimental plots, where two cut heights were tested from March 22th 2002 to March 29th 2002. Leaf appearance and elongation rates, leaf blade final length, leaf length, number of alive leaves by tiller and average canopy height were the evaluated traits. Leaf length and average canopy height were affected by the cut heights. No significant differences were observed for the other traits. Cut at 25 cm can result in faster tissue renew, probably due to the smaller sheath size, resulting in smaller leaf length.
