Satoyama bamboo groves in Japan have been used as landscaping materials and as edible bamboo shoots, and have been maintained in close contact with people's lives. However, the Satoyama bamboo grove is now neglected. In Japan, neglected bamboo groves continue to cause damage to Satoyama landscapes. According to 2017 Forestry Agency statistics, there are 167,000 ha of bamboo forests in Japan. However, it is estimated that the forest area invaded by more than 25% of bamboo forests is about 420,000 ha in Japan. In this paper, authors clarified the factors behind the expansion of bamboo forests in Ami Town, lbaraki Prefecture, where bamboo shoots were being produced, the distribution and quantity of bamboo groves by remote sensing. The reason for the expansion of the bamboo grove is that the bamboo shoots could not be harvested due to the earlier rice planting season. One is that the time for planting rice has been brought forward due to the introduction of early-maturing varieties of paddy rice, the consolidation of arable land, and the development of agricultural irrigation canals. The second reason is that the area under cultivation per person increased due to the decrease in the number of farmers, and rice planting gradually began earlier in the district because the work would not be completed unless the rice planting began early. Authors clarified the change of bamboo forest distribution between 1975 and 2020 by remote sensing. Bamboo grove area expanded 2.9 times from 24.6 ha in 1975 to 70.7 ha in 2020. Then, authors discussed the useful utilization of the expanded bamboo material grove, especially multifaceted value of bamboo; it has cultural value such as daily necessities and landscaping materials, disaster prevention value such as windbreak and flood prevention, and environmental value that contributes to carbon neutrality, in the future.
