Rice is an essential crop for ensuring food security and, at the same time, securing adequate profitability for farmers. This study aims to determine the effect of different planting densities on the milling quality of the promising rice line L-17 (Oryza sp.), using a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors: two rice cultivars and six planting densities. The results indicated that both the L-17 line and the commercial variety SFL-11 showed statistically significant differences in several variables related to milling quality: polishing, whole grain percentage, broken grains, whiteness, and chalkiness. However, no statistically significant differences were observed among planting densities or in the cultivar*density interaction. Regarding amylose content, L-17 was significantly superior to SFL-11 at several densities (D1, D2, D3, and D5). For protein content, L-17 presented slightly higher values at D1, D3, and D5, though these differences were not statistically significant. In the variables husk, brown rice, and bran, no significant differences were found, although density D3 of L-17 showed balanced results across the studied variables. The highest percentages of whole grains were observed in L-17 at D2 (610.33) and in SFL-11 at D6 (636.67), without statistical significance. In conclusion, the L-17 line proved to be competitive compared to SFL-11 in terms of milling quality. Densities D1, D3, and D5 contributed to favorable performance in the L-17 line, supporting its viability as an alternative cultivar. This positive performance positions L-17 as a promising option for the rice sector, particularly under certain planting densities.
