The article explores the significance of maize (Zea mays L.) cultivation in the Republic of Moldova, highlighting its status as a crucial cereal and fodder crop occupying approximately 400,000 hectares an nually. It emphasizes the predominant use of domestic hybrids, renowned for their resistance to root and stalk lodging, diseases, pests, heat, and drought. The breeding program discussed involves selecting new genetic material within germplasm pools, developing inbred lines, evaluating combinational abilities through topcross and diallel crosses, and testing new hybrid combinations. Heterotic groups play a main role in optimizing hybrid performance, with specific focus on Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic (BSSS), Reid Yellow Dent, Lancaster, and other heterotic groups. The integration of diverse germplasm from various breeding programs is detailed, highlighting advancements in maize breeding efforts aimed at enhancing yield and genetic diversity in elite maize germplasm.
