Estimation of the intestinal digestibility of rumen undegradable protein based on in situ rumen degradation characteristics : Estimation of the intestinal digestibility of rumen undegradable protein and of the percentage of indigestible protein based on in situ rumen degradation characteristics using the ILVO dataset

The intestinal digestibility of rumen undegradable protein (DRUP) values of feedstuffs for ruminants in the CVB Feed Table are in a number of cases not based on measurements but calculated using the formula: DRUP (%)= (RUP (%) – U-CP (%)) / RUP (%) × 100 where U-CP represents the undegradable protein after a 12-14 day rumen incubation period and RUP the percentage of rumen undegradable protein. While DRUP can be measured using the mobile nylon bag technique (MNBT), this method is costly, time-consuming, and raises ethical concerns. At ILVO, DRUP values for 188 feedstuffs have been determined over the past 30 years using MNBT. This study aimed to develop prediction formulas for DRUP based on rumen degradation characteristics, such as U-CP and W-CP (washable crude protein), using ILVO’s dataset. The second goal was to compare DRUP values from the CVB Feed Table with those predicted by the formulas. It is concluded that in contrast to concentrate feedstuffs the DRUP of roughages and wet by-products can be more accurately estimated based on the combination of the W-CP and U-CP fractions than calculated from RUP and U-CP alone. Furthermore, results indicate that the CVB formula to predict DRUP results in an underestimation of DRUP, which can be explained by the fact that part of the U-CP fraction (which is in the CVB formula considered completely indigestible) consists of intestinal digestible microbial protein.

De darmverteerbaar bestendig eiwit waarden (DVBE) van voedermiddelen voor herkauwers in de CVB-Veevoedertabel zijn in een aantal gevallen niet gebaseerd op metingen, maar berekend met de formule: DVBE (%) = (BRE (%) – U-RE (%)) / BRE (%) × 100 waarbij U-RE het aandeel onverteerbaar eiwit is na een 12-14 dagen incubatieperiode in de pens en BRE het percentage pensbestendig eiwit is. DVBE kan worden gemeten met de mobiele nylon zakjes methode (MNBT). Echter, deze methode is kostbaar, tijdrovend, en ethisch omstreden. Bij ILVO zijn de afgelopen 30 jaar DVBE-waarden voor 188 voedermiddelen bepaald met behulp van MNBT. Het doel van deze studie was het ontwikkelen van voorspellingsformules voor DVBE op basis van de pensafbraakkenmerken U-RE en W-RE (W-RE is uitwasbaar ruw eiwit), met behulp van de ILVO-dataset. Het tweede doel was om de DVBE-waarden uit de CVB-voedertabel te vergelijken met die voorspeld door de formules. Uit deze studie bleek dat in tegenstelling tot krachtvoedergrondstoffen de DVBE van ruwvoeders en natte bijproducten nauwkeuriger kan worden geschat op basis van de combinatie van de W-CP- en U-CP-fracties dan berekend o.b.v. de CVB formule voor DVBE. De resultaten wijzen er verder op dat de CVB-formule voor DVBE leidt tot een onderschatting van de werkelijke waarde wat verklaard kan worden door het feit dat een deel van de U-RE-fractie (wat in de CVB-formule als volledig onverteerbaar wordt beschouwd) bestaat uit darmverteerbaar microbieel eiwit.
