Agri-food chains and governance mechanisms: A descriptive analysis of socio-economic performance factors and dimensions of the Andean fruit network | Cadenas agroalimentarias y mecanismos de gobernanza: Análisis descriptivo de factores de desempeño socio-económico y dimensiones de red frutícola Andina

إنجليزي. The fruit and vegetable sector in Ecuador has shown promising performance in domestic and international markets. Equally, this sector has faced problems of a social, economic and productive nature in its structure and articulations, which until now require intervention. The case of the agri-food network of the tomato tree, located in the central Andean area of ​​the country, is one of the many examples of the mentioned sector; in this sense, the present study shows the main social and productive characteristics, its horizontal and vertical configuration; and the proposal of strategies focused on improving their productive performance. The study applied a systemic methodology aimed at the identification and characterization of stages, agents and activities (primary and support), and the analysis of the governance mechanisms of the network. The study concluded that on the one hand, the inclusion of women, the sense of associativity of processors and distributors, and the training of producers on issues related to post-harvest, and good agricultural practices would meaningfully improve the economic performance of the network and, conversely, they would incentivize a greater participation of the agents involved. To conclude, it was deduced that the network requires increasing the area assigned to the tomato tree crop and the application of greenhouse production systems that increase yields.

الأسبانية؛ قشتالية. El sector de las frutas y hortalizas en Ecuador ha mostrado un desempeño prometedor en mercados de tipo doméstico e internacional. Asimismo, este sector ha enfrentado problemas de carácter social, económico y productivo en su estructura y articulaciones, que hasta el momento requieren de intervención. El caso de la red agroalimentaria del tomate de árbol, situada en la zona andina central del país, es uno de los tantos ejemplos del mencionado sector; en este sentido, el presente estudio muestra las principales características sociales y productivas, su configuración horizontal y vertical; y la propuesta de estrategias enfocadas en la mejora de su desempeño productivo. En el estudio se aplicó una metodología sistémica encaminada a la identificación y caracterización de etapas, agentes y actividades (primarias y de soporte), y el análisis de los mecanismos de gobernanza de la red. El estudio concluyó que por una parte la inclusión de mujeres, el sentido de asociatividad de procesadores y distribuidores, y la formación de productores en temáticas relacionadas a poscosecha, y buenas prácticas agrícolas mejorarían significativamente el desempeño económico de la red y, por otro lado, incentivarían una mayor participación de los agentes involucrados. Finalmente, se dedujo que la red requiere aumentar el área asignada al cultivo de tomate de árbol, y la aplicación de sistemas de producción bajo invernadero que incrementen los rendimientos.
