Household food supplies are insufficient in a post-calamity or emergency situation. The summed is importing from Mexico using controlled atmosphere (CA) technology in reefer containers to Japan. Environmental conditions in CA containers are around 50[square], 4-5% 0 sub 2, and 5% CO sub 2. Fruits arrive to Japan about 30 days after harvest, therefore the shelf life is relatively short. 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), an inhibitor of ethylene action, works to inhibit aging in a variety of fruits. However, it is not clear if the application of 1-MCP is effective in extending the shelf life of fruit after transported by CA containers. In this study, the imported avocado fruit stored until ripened at 20[square]0 after with 0.3 HL-L-1 of 1-MCP for 18 hours at 200 [square] treated. The application of 1-MCP prior to the climacteric increase, was effective about 7 days delay of the ripening. There is likely a link between this result and the delayed onset of the climax peak of ethylene and CO sub 2 production. However, 1-MCP treatment significantly increased the incidence of stem-end rot. These results indicate that avocado fruits transported at low temperatures by CA technology remain responsive to 1-MCP even about one month after harvest. In the future, it is necessary to establish technology to control stem-end rot.
