Evaluation of some faba bean cultivars under different sowing dates

Field trials were conducted during the winter seasons of 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 at Cairo University’s Agricultural Experiment Research Station to evaluate the performance of three faba bean varieties (Sakha 1, Giza 716, and Giza 843) across three planting dates (October 1, October 20, and November 1). The study assessed the impact of planting dates on growth parameters, yield components, and quality traits. Results showed significant variations in all analyzed traits based on planting dates, with October 20 plantings yielding the best results for plant height, pods per plant, seeds per plant, 100-seed weight, and seed yield per hectare. Giza 843 consistently outperformed Sakha 1 and Giza 716 in seed yield and related components. Delaying sowing from October 1 to November 1 influenced seed protein content, stewing percentage, and total soluble solids (TSS%). The findings suggest that sowing Giza 843 on October 20 optimizes seed yield and quality under Giza district conditions, providing valuable insights for enhancing faba bean cultivation practices in the region.
