More than a century ago, African swine fever (ASF) was diagnosed in Africa (Kenya). The disease has persisted in Africa for a long time, but it was intro duced, into other regions since 1957. The most recent introduction (2007), re sulted in spread of the disease in the European Union (EU) in 2014, as well as in the countries of SouthEastern Europe region. In the last years, at least two new countries have become affected in Europe each year: the Czech Republic and Romania in 2017, Hungary, Bulgaria and Belgium in 2018, Slovakia and Serbia in 2019, and Greece and Germany in 2020. In many parts of Europe, the epidemic is maintained in wild pigs populations without involvement of dome stic pigs. However, in SouthEastern Europe region, there is a strong association of wild pigs and domestic pig populations. In the domestic pig cycle, the drivers of ASF transmission are human activities. Disease transmission risks in the do mestic pig cycle are zhe highest in backyards and smallholdings. Despite exten sive control measures, implemented in countries affected by ASFepidemic, the geographical expansion continues. In this paper, we summarise the epidemio logical situation, with special emphasis on routes of disease transmission in the countries of SouthEast Europe.
