The Role of the Local Community in Preserving Hayer Abbas Forest and Investing it in a Sustainable Way in Mesyaf (Al-Rusafa and Al-Bayda) - Hama – Syria

The research was conducted in the villages near Hayer Abbas Forest in 2019-2021to know the most important causes of fires in the forest between 2011-2017, their impact on the neighboring community, the role of that community in the protection it, and a price comparison made between 2020-2021 for products invested by the local community. A questionnaire was distributed to50 samples in Al-Rusafa and Al-Bayda. The results showed that 50% of fires caused by the firewood dealers, 30% terrorist attacks, 10% the climatic changes, 10% neglect and the lack of awareness. 90% of answers indicated that the primary investment of the forest is a firewood, while 10% are grazing and collecting medicinal and aromatic plants. As 88% of the local people know the right to benefit from the forest, so 78% of them participated in afforestation after the fires. An increase in the prices of almost products showed above 100% in the study area and the markets of Mesyaf, this indicates more pressure on forest products for following years.
