Mis à mal par la guerre civile, le braconnage et l'abattage massif des gros mammifères, le Parc naturel du Gorongosa renaît aujourd'hui de ses cendres grâce au Gorongosa Restoration Project, un ambitieux programme de conservation et de protection qui tient également compte des populations humaines avoisinantes. Ce projet particulièrement innovant a pour objectif de développer son champ d'action jusqu'à l'océan Indien.
