A partir del brote viral de neumonía que inicio en China, (Wuhan) para finales del 2019 dio como origen a la enfermedad COVID-19, que con el pasar de los días se convirtió en pandemia, iniciando una de las emergencias sanitarias más grande de los últimos años impactando la economía, salud y al ambiente entre otros. Los largos periodos de confinamiento y cuarentena trajeron con ellos el aumento del consumo de productos en los hogares tanto de productos de aseo, alimentos, material hospitalario entre otros, este patrón de consumo generó desafíos específicos en el tema de residuos sólidos y hospitalarios; la disposición final es un problema ambiental y de salud que viene desde hace muchos años ya que no se realizan procesos adecuados de separación en la fuente; uno de los principales residuos que dejo la pandemia son las mascarillas o tapabocas los cuales generan un gran impacto en el medio ambiente por su material, ya que estos en los hogares y en sitios de disposición no son identificados ni separados, llegando al mismo lugar de otros residuos que se pueden reciclar o de características diferentes, tras estos sucesos se ve la necesidad de crear buenas prácticas para el manejo de todos los residuos que se producen en el hogar incluyendo los hospitalarios, mitigando y controlando que estos no lleguen a sitios inadecuados generando una problemática ambiental o de salud más grande, igualmente garantizando modalidades de consumo y producción sostenible como lo establece el objetivo de desarrollo sostenible número 12.
