إنجليزي. Among the alternative energy sources available in Brazil, one of the most promising is biomass energy, due mainly to its renewable characteristics. Methane gas production, one of the possible transformations of biomass, is particularly interesting because the gas is obtained from animal and plant residues, otherwise of little further use, or eventually even held to be contaminants and pollutants. Besides the energy production, the installed and utilized en rural areas, yields another product, bio fertilizer, of excellent and profitable employment in agriculture. The digestion process, correct use of the organic raw material and characteristcs of biogas and biofertilizer are described.

A produção de gás metano, uma das alternativas de utilização de biomassa, é particularmente interessante por ser obtida a partir de resíduos vegetais e animais, normalmente considerados dejetos de pequeno aproveitamento ou eventualmente até contaminantes e poluentes. Além de obtenção de energia de fácil implementação e aproveitamento em áreas rurais, obtém-se pela fermentação anaeróbica dos resíduos orgânicos, um subproduto, o biofertilizante, de excelente aproveitamento na lavouÂra. O processo de biodigestão, o emprego das matérias orgânicas e características do biogás e biofertilizante são descritos no presente trabalho.
