ABSTRACT - Agroecology is discussed as an interface of the socioeconomic development of family farmers, who are driven by social movements and public policies. Case studies of Mendoza, Argentina, and of Nova Friburgo, Brazil, and qualitative methodology were used to define samplings for interviews and to organize collected information collected. The occupation characteristics of the two analyzed territories shaped the local production systems. In the research process, to clearly grasping these characteristics was essential to understand how the agricultural strategies developed by the families within their production systems were established. Agroecology appears not only as an alternative to the means for developing production techniques, but also as an option for a process of sustainable territorial development.
