COPRAA : Knowledge and tools for preventive and operational approaches to agroecological weedy plant management

At the end of a seminar focusing on crop protection and weed management, against a backdrop of questioning of agricultural and food models in France and Europe, it is worth emphasizing the pressing need to produce in an economically efficient way, while reducing the impact on human health and environment. We also need to anticipate the withdrawal of active substances or the loss of their efficacy, which requires us to correct cognitive biases concerning pesticides.The Copraa seminar highlighted the importance of moving beyond crisis situations linked to impasses to focus on prevention and prophylaxis. Modeling based on the FlorSys model is a relevant tool, into which disruptive approaches such as crop diversification and agroecology should be integrated. The integration of animals and the increasing complexity of systems are also avenues to be pursued and nurtured.Various topics discussed during the seminar need to be pursued and deepened, such as the application of lessons learned from different crops and contexts, the consideration of other means of production such as nitrogen nutrition, and the crucial role of human and social sciences. We need to develop real agroecological engineering, involving a wide range of players and exploring innovative solutions, including machinery. Finally, it is crucial to consider the hidden costs of pesticide use for a viable economic transition. The symposium demonstrated the wealth of avenues open and the need for political support to bring about changes in practices.
