إنجليزي. Ratoon stunting (RSD) is probably the most important sugarcane disease affecting a great number of productive varieties. The causal agent is Clavibacter xyli subsp. xyli lodged in xylem vessels. Seed hydrothermal treatment is commonly applied for its control, but it can not fully remove the pathogen. However, after a thermal treatment a yield increment is observed, which has been considered as a result of an effectivesanitation. On the other hand, the visual diagnosis of this disease is difficult, since external symptoms are confused with other pathologies; thus, other diagnostic techniques were developed enabling to detect disease appearance. This study applied staining by transpiration method (STM) to early estimate an effective sanitation by hydrothermotherapy. A differentiated varietal performance against RSD was proved, it ranging from a little difference between treated and inoculated plants in My5514 until a very marked difference in C120-78. Percentage of functional vessels (%VF) confirmed the results from other investigations in My5514 (resistant) and CP31-294 (susceptible). Varietal sanitation in Ja60-5, C1051-73 and CP52-43 was analyzed through phase contrast (CF) and STM when diseased stalks were thermally treated by means of different combinations of times and temperatures. Bacterial appearance was recorded by CF; nevertheless, when studying % VF in every case, it surpassed 85 % after submitted to a treatment under 50.5oC for two hours. A nice correlation was registered between weight and % VF in treated and inoculated My5514 and C120-78. These results prove this useful method to evaluate sanitation against RSD, which can be taken into consideration for seed bank qualification.

الأسبانية؛ قشتالية. El raquitismo de los retoños es probablemente la enfermedadmás importante de la caña de azúcar, afecta un gran númerode variedades de la producción. El agente causal es la bacteriaClavibacter xily subsp. xyli, la cual se aloja en los vasos del xilema. El tratamiento hidrotérmico a la semilla es el método más usado para su control, pero no logra una total erradicación del patógeno. Sin embargo, después de un tratamiento térmico se observa un incremento en el rendimiento , siendo este el criterio empleado para medir la efectividad del saneamiento. Por otra parte, el diagnóstico visual de la enfermedad se dificulta, ya que los síntomas externos pueden confundirse con otras patologías. Sobre la base de esta dificultad, se han desarrollado otras técnicas de diagnóstico que permitan detectar la presencia o no de la enfermedad. En este trabajo seempleó el Método de Tinción por Transpiración (STM) para evaluar tempranamente la efectividad del saneamiento porhidrotermoterapia. Se pudo demostrar un comportamiento diferenciado de las variedades ante el raquitismo de los retoños (RSD), que va desde muy poca diferencia entre las plantas tratadas e inoculadas en My5514 hasta una diferencia muy acentuada en C120-78. El comportamiento del porcentaje de vasos funcionales (% VF) corroboró los resultados alcanzados en otras investigaciones con My5514 (resistente) y CP31-294 (susceptible). Se analizó el saneamiento de las variedades Ja60-5, C1051-73 y CP52-43 mediante el contraste de fases (CF) y el STM, cuando los tallos enfermos se trataron térmicamente con diferentes combinaciones de tiempo y temperaturas. Se encontró la presencia de la bacteria utilizando el CF; sin embargo, al analizar %VF en todos los casos fue superior al 85 % después de un tratamiento de 50.5ºC/2 horas. Se obtuvo una buena correlación entre el peso y el %VF en las variedades My5514 y C120-78 tratadas e inoculadas. Estos resultados confirman la utilidad de este método para la evaluación del saneamiento al RSD, criterio que puede utilizarse para la calificación de los bancos de semilla.
