Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), a resistant forage grass species, has been increasingly used as a genetic raw material for the creation of intercrossing hybrids in the breeding process at the Skrīveri Institute of Agriculture. In addition, work is also under way on the creation of a new tall fescue variety with improved forage quality characteristics, including edibility. The only pure form of tall fescue, the narrow-leaved ‘Šaurlapu’, has been evaluated in trials for about 25 years and is being prepared for the registration of the variety. There is no standard variety available in Latvia; imported varieties have been adapted so far. Since 2020, the standard variety used in trials for comparison with our created variety has been ‘Medainis’ from Lithuania (LT). In the test of varieties established in 2019, yield records and phenological observations demonstrated the competitiveness of this promising variety in terms of productivity, sward persistence, and quality. Tall fescue with wider leaves is usually more productive, but sharper. Variety ‘Šaurlapu’ has narrower leaves, a slightly lower dry matter yield, but relatively better edibility. It tolerates long periods of drought well, and quickly regrows afterwards. In the agro-meteorological conditions of Skrīveri, no problems with winter hardiness have been observed. Depending on the agro-meteorological conditions, variety ‘Šaurlapu’ has 3 to 4 full cuts, the forage yield varied between 9 – 12 t ha ־¹ of dry matter.
