Low-carbon fertilisers: a lever for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector
2025
Boudes, Cédric | Yara France
This issue follows on from the Carrefour de l'innovation agronomique, forum dedicated to reducing the carbon footprint of agricultural and agri-food activities, which took place on September 19, 2024: - analyzing the trajectory of carbon footprint reduction in various activities related to agriculture and food (crops, livestock, agricultural inputs, food production) based on certain innovations- how stakeholders in agriculture and agri-food are committed to innovation aimed at carbon neutrality.

Yara, with its experience since 1905 in the production of nitrogen fertilizers, has developed technologies that significantly reduce its N2O emissions into the atmosphere and continues to reduce its carbon footprint today. For example, the project which was carried out in 2024 as part of the DECARB INDUSTRIE program made it possible to reduce emissions to the atmosphere by 50,000 teq CO2/year equivalent by optimizing the N2O catalysis of nitric acid production at Yara Ambès. The reduction in the carbon footprint can reach up to 90% for the fertilizer sector, 30% for the agricultural sectors and 20% for the agri-food sectors by using best practices in production and use of inputs.
