Evaluación de biosorbentes naturales para la remoción de Cr (VI) a partir de una solución acuosa y su potencial aplicación en el tratamiento de efluentes de curtiembres | Evaluation of natural biosorbents for the removal of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution and their potential application in the treatment of tannery effluents

La remoción de Cr (VI) de aguas residuales industriales representa una actividad altamente prioritaria. Al respecto, la industria de curtiembres genera altos volúmenes de efluentes contaminados con este metal, y por tanto, el estudio de métodos eficientes y económicos, que posibiliten su remoción, constituye un tema de relevante interés para este sector. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el desempeño de biosorbentes naturales, empleando cáscaras de mandarina (CM), plátano (CP)y bagazo de caña (BCA), como alternativa para la remoción de Cr (VI) presente en una solución acuosa. Para ello, inicialmente fue realizada la caracterización fisicoquímica de los biosorbentes, considerando: pH, acidez, granulometría, porosidad y concentración de sólidos. Los biosorbentes fueron tratados mediante lavado con agua destilada, seguido de secado (105°C por 24h) y trituración, hasta obtener una granulometría <0,06 mm. Se realizaron bioensayos a 18°C durante 24 h y 200 rpm, con diferentes proporciones de los biosorbentes, tratando una solución acuosa conteniendo Cr (VI) a 50 ppm. Fueron evidenciadas diferencias significativas (p<0,05) entre los tratamientos, obteniendo remociones máximas de 72,8 +/- 9,6%; 99,4 +/- 0,2% y 99,0 +/- 0,3%, para CM, CP y BCA, respectivamente. Fue evidenciada una mayor remoción de Cr (VI), con el incremento de material biosorbente aplicado. Finalmente, se confirmó que esta alternativa presenta un gran acercamiento verde (91,2%), lo cual representaría beneficios en términos ambientales durante su implementación. Este estudio constituye una contribución al desarrollo de tecnologías potencialmente aplicables al tratamiento de aguas de curtiembre contaminados con Cr (VI).

The removal of Cr (VI) from industrial wastewater represents a high priority activity. In this regard, the tannery industry generates high volumes of effluents contaminated with this metal, and therefore, the study of efficient and economical methods for its removal is a topic of relevant interest for this sector. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of natural biosorbents, using mandarin peels (CM), banana peels (CP) and sugarcane bagasse (BCA), as an alternative for the removal of Cr (VI) present in an aqueous solution. For this purpose, the physicochemical characterization of the biosorbents was initially carried out, considering: pH, acidity, granulometry, porosity and solids concentration. The biosorbents were treated by washing with distilled water, followed by drying (105°C for 24h) and crushing, until a particle size <0.06 mm was obtained. Bioassays were performed at 18°C for 24 h and 200 rpm, with different proportions of the biosorbents, treating an aqueous solution containing Cr (VI) at 50 ppm. Significant differences (p<0.05) were evidenced among the treatments, obtaining maximum removals of 72.8 +/- 9.6%; 99.4 +/- 0.2% and 99.0 +/- 0.3%, for CM, CP and BCA, respectively. A higher Cr (VI) removal was evidenced with the increase of biosorbent material applied. Finally, it was confirmed that this alternative presents a great green approach (91.2%), which would represent benefits in environmental terms during its implementation. This study constitutes a contribution to the development of technologies potentially applicable to the treatment of tannery waters contaminated with Cr (VI).
