A cross-sectional study of bovine tuberculosis in selected dairy farms in Ethiopia
2003
Ameni, G. | Bonnet, P. | Tibbo, Markos
A cross-sectional study to determine individual animal prevalence of bovine tuberculosis (BTB) was conducted on 1171 dairy cattle in 12 randomly selected dairy farms in Ethiopia between January 1999 and May 2001 using comparative intradermal tuberculin (CIT) test and bacteriologic study through milk culturing. An overall individual animal prevalence of 46.8% (548 of 1171 animals) and a herd prevalence of 91.7% (11 of 12 farms) were recorded in 12 dairy farms by the CIT test. There were significant (P <0.0001) differences in individual prevalence between farms and breeds (pure Holstein and their crosses with Zebu). There was positive correlation (r = 0.41) between herd size and prevalence of bovine tuberculosis. Furthermore, a negative linear association (R2 = 0.24) was found between mean score of management of the farm and prevalence, indicating that the prevalence of bovine tuberculosis could be improved by sanitary measures. Breed and management affected the prevalence of BTB (R2 = 0.30) as confounding variables. Mycobacterium bovis was isolated from the milk of 13.3% (4 of 30) reactor cows. The widespread occurrence of BTB in the study farms and isolation of M. bovis from the milk of reactor cows signify its economic importance and potential risk to public health. Generalization and improved use of milk pasteurization within all dairy subsectors is recommended, and this would affect the competitiveness of the dairy sector in Ethiopia.

Streptococcus agalactiae is an important zoonotic pathogen that affects milk production and quality and poses a threat to public health. Treatment of infections with this bacterium exploits antimicrobials, to which the resistance of S. agalactiae is a growing problem. Addressing the possibility of a correlation between this pathogen’s genetic factors for antimicrobial resistance and virulence, this study attempted to identify the relevant genes.

A study was carried out to report the phylogenetic analysis of Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensisby using molecular techniques from samples submitted to the Regional Veterinary Laboratory, Bukit Tengah. In this study, identification and genetic characterization of Brucella isolated samples using molecular analysis based on IS711 sequence between localisolates and foreign countries accesses in GenBank was done successfully. A total of 31 samples were isolated for Brucella species and then were amplified byPCR, directly sequenced and compared genetically to published sequences which were obtained from GenBank. The most common Brucella species that was found in both bovine (76.5%) and caprine (85.7%) through diagnostic samples in Regional Veterinary Laboratory, Bukit Tengah, was Brucella melitensis. PCR and sequencing were confirmed positive with 76.5% for Brucella melitensis, 23.5% for Brucella abortus and 23.5% for mixed infectionfrom the total of 17 bovine samples. In caprine, the detection of Brucella melintesis and Brucella abortus showed 85.7% and 21.4% respectively meanwhile total mixedinfection showed 21.4%. These clustering between local isolates of Brucella melitensis were phylogenetically related to other Asian countries such as Singapore,Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The Neighbour Joining Analysis clustered the Brucella abortus local isolates for both bovine and caprine were most closely related to India,Iran, Italy and USA. Interestingly, all the isolates within Malaysia have a close relationship (>95%) with the low level of genetic diversity. When local isolates arecompared to GenBank data, it gives an indication on the possible sources of these infections. Eventually, it will improve the import and export policies to controlbrucellosis in Malaysia.

Diarrhoea in calves is considering a serious clinical problem inBangladesh. Calf is the back bone of the dairy industry. Diarrhoea in farm animals, especially in neonatal calves is one of the most challenging clinical syndromes encountered by large animal Veterinarypractitioners. The present investigation was conducted with the aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ciprofloxacin and gentamycin in the treatment of diarrhoea in neonatal calves. The studied was carried out for a period of six month from January 2013 to June 2013 in Kanaighat, Sylhet, Bangladesh. Calves (n=60) under 10 days of age with clinical signs of diarrhoea were randomly divided into two groups. One group was treated with intramuscular ciprofloxacin at a dose of 5 mg/kg once daily, while other group was treated withintramuscular (IM) gentamycin (dose of 5 mg/kg) once daily for three consecutive days. Calves evaluated clinically from the treatment and the recovery rates for the ciprofloxacin and gentamycin groups afterthree days of treatment were 73.33% and 66.67%, respectively. This trial revealed ciprofloxacine administered through IM route from the first day of the clinical sign observed was more efficacious in calfdiarrhoea compared to gentamycin.

Investigation of peculiar features of productive and reproductive qualities (milk producing ability; reproductive qualities; live weight at different ages) of milking cows of white-and-black breed was realized in the conditions of CJSC Lipovtsy of Vitebsk region of the Republic of Belarus. On the basis of obtained results there was calculated the selective differential of milk yield and butter-fat yielding capacity which were increased by means of maternal and father's cattle; genetic progress through selection in reliance on generation and target standard for the analyzed herd, as well as the minimal requirements to first-calf heifer productivity.Research results showed that average milk yield in the analyzed herd was 5204 kg with average butterfat percentage 3,59%; for first-calf heifers – 4838 kg with butter-fat yield of 3,47%. Productivity of first-calf heifers and cows was higher than the standard valuation requirements to milk yield on 1350-1588 kg

In the conditions of market relations formation the lowering of production prime cost at the JSC Sennitsa Plant SOM gained the special importance. The reserve supplies for increasing of economic efficiency of milk processing and dairy products production in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus were analyzed. A subject of activity of the enterprise is milk processing, development of dairy production and its realization. Economic benefit of realization of the offered actions is shown. Transfer to the local sources of fuel (woodfuel) made it possible to reduce considerably the cost price of production at the analysed plant. By means of lowering the current consumption of electric energy the economy of the cost price due to decrease expenses for the electric power will make 0,27%. The general economic benefit will consist in decrease in the cost price of a commodity output on on 2,71%, increase of production profitability on 3,55 items. Thus, the realization of the offered actions will considerably improve the financial indicators of JSC Sennitsa Plant SOM
