Seroepidemiologic survey for adenovirus infection in lambs.
1993

A serologic survey was conducted to determine the prevalence and seroconversion rates for ovine adenovirus (OAV) serotypes 1-4 and bovine adenovirus (BAV) serotypes 2, 3, and 7 in sheep in Iowa and in surrounding states. For 2 consecutive years, paired serum samples were obtained from 1- to 2-month-old lambs as they entered a ram test station and, again, 2 months later. Sera were tested for adenovirus antibodies by use of a microtitration serum virus-neutralization test. At the time of entry, high prevalence of antibody (titer greater than or equal to 2) was detected to all tested adenoviruses except BAV-3. All adenoviruses were active in the ram test station both years, as indicated by greater than or equal to fourfold increase in adenovirus antibody titer (seroconversion) in some of the lambs. The prevalence and seroconversion rate for OAV-1 was 94.0 and 7.2%, respectively; for OAV-2, 98.6 and 15.1%; for OAV-3, 86.5 and 11.0%; for OAV-4, 98.4 and 13.2%; for BAV-2, 97.6 and 22.4%; for BAV-3, 11.4 and 3.8%; and for BAV-7, 81.6 and 4.5%. The results indicate that adenovirus infections were widespread in the sheep population and that the prevalence of active infection based on seroconversion rates was approximately 45%.

This study was conducted to survey of Ehrlichia (E.) canis and Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi antibodies among clinically healthy German shepherd dogs (116 females and 120 males) using a ELISA kit (SNAP 3Dx; IDEXX Laboratories, USA) in Korea. Whole blood samples are collected from the 236 dogs and are tested to detect E. canis and B. burgdorferi antibodies by using ELISA kit (SNAP 3Dx; IDEXX Laboratories, USA). Confidence interval comparisions revealed that dogs of 4-6 years have higher prevalence with a seropositive result (CI = 0.17 - 0.45) in E. canis than the other age groups but there are no differences among age groups in B. burgdorferi.

A stochastic simulation model incorporated with Reed-Frost approach was derived for evaluating diagnostic performance of a test used for a screening program of an infectious disease. The Reed-Frost model was used to characterize the within-herd spread of the disease using a hypothetical example. Specifically, simulation model was aimed to estimate the number infected animals in an infected herd, in which imperfect serologic tests are performed on samples taken from herds and to illustrate better interpreting survey results at herd-level when uncertainty inevitably exists.

A survey of Sarcocystis infections in slaughtered cattle in Korea
1988
Kang, Y.B. | Kim, S.H. | Wee, S.H. (Rural Development Administration, Anyang (Korea R.). Veterinary Research Institute)
A preliminary survey of Sarcocystis species in the slaughtered cattle in Seoul was undertaken during October through December 1987, using digestion diagnostic technique for the heart muscle specimens digested in 0.5 % trypsin solution. Results indicated that 41.5 % of 159 bovine hearts were infected with Sarcocystis proliferative forms. High frequencies in the exotic dairy cattle (42.2%) and the Korean native cattle (41.7%) were noticed in comparison with low frequency in the cross breed (25.0%). No differences were indicated between the sexes of the host animals, although an age difference was noticed as 48.9 % in cattle older than four years in comparison with 39.0 % and 37.1 % in younger than two years and in two to four years, respectively
