Between January and april, 1992, two captive Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) from a wildlife park in Iwamizawa City, Hokkaido, Japan, were diagnosed as having nutritional myopathy. One wallaby, four-year-old adult male, had mild fresh lesions, confined to the skeletal muscles, with poor cell reaction. The other wallaby, 8-month-old female joey, had marked and extensive lesions with cellular reactions and regenerative muscle fibers in the locomotor muscles. Involvement of other striated muscles such as those of the tongue, diaphragm and heart was mild with minimal cellular reaction. Age susceptibility may account for the difference in the extent of severity of the lesions between these two animals

2010
Sharma, Nitika | Mukherjee, Reena | Ingale, S.L. | Jadhav, R.K.
Therapeutic and anti-oxidant potential of vitamin E and selenium was evaluated in mastitic cows. The CMT point score and milk somatic cell count (SCC) was significantly (P0.05) higher in mastitic cows prior to treatment. Reduced activity of enzymatic anti-oxidant catalase was observed in mastitic animals. The parameters studied in mastitic cows treated amoxicillin sulbactum (group II) and with amoxicillin sulbactum, vitamin E and selenium (group III) were compared with that of group I healthy cows. Significant reduction (P0.05) in CMT and SCC was observed in both the treated groups. However, reduction in CMT point score and SCC was more pronounced in group III than group II cows. Synergistic action of antibiotic and vitamin E selenium significantly (P0.05) enhanced the activity of catalase in group III mastitic animals on day 8 time period. Therefore, vitamin E and selenium supplementation could be advised in the therapy of mastitis.

| The effects of vitamins C and/or E associated to amonium tetrathiomolybdate (TTM) in the treatment of cumulative copper intoxication (ICC) in sheep were analyzed throughout oxidative metabolism. Reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), uric acid and the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) concentrations were evaluated. Twenty four male sheep, Santa Ines breed, with 25 kg BW was distributed in four treatments: TTM, TTM and vitamin C (TTM+VC), TTM with vitamin E (TTM+VE) and TTM with vitamins C and E (TTM+VCE). The intoxication status caused an intensive formation of free radicals with reduction of the GSH concentration and increase of MDA. Despite the increase in the capacity of plasmatic antioxidant observed with the increase of uric acid and FRAP concentrations, it was not observed any benefit with treatments using oxidant vitamins, isolatedly or together with classic treatment only with TTM.

288 Babcock laying hens were used. Birds were fed diets containing 6% of canola oil, 20% of flaxseed or a combination of 3% of canola oil and 10% of flaxseed, enriched with 0, 100 or 200 Ul of dl-a-tocopheril acetate, hens were randomly allocated and the experimental design was a 3X3 factorial arrangement. The inclusion of flaxseed into the diet increased the yolk polyunsaturated fatty acids oxidation products, in crude and cooked stored eggs. The concentration of fatty acids oxidation products decrease in crude eggs in all sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The cooked eggs without a-tocopherol supplementation in the diet increase the concentration of oxidation products when compared with cooked eggs from diets with 100 or 200UI a-tocopherol in the diet

| To investigate the effect of dietary sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids - canola oil (6%), flaxseed (20%) or the combination of both (3% canola oil and 10% flaxseed), and vitamin E supplementation (0,100 e 200 IU/kg of diet) upon the fatty acids and alpha-tocopherol deposition into the eggs, 288 Babcock laying hens were used for a 11 week experimental period. Hens fed 20% flaxseed diet showed a significant reduction of egg weight, feed efficiency, egg production, eggshell thickness and eggshell weight. The inclusion of flaxseed in the diet increased the polyunsaturated fatty acids, depressed monounsaturated fatty acids incorporated into the egg yolk, and increased the ratio P/S (polyunsaturated:saturated fatty acids). Yolk alpha-tocopherol concentration was proportional to its content in the diet (R²=0.9613). Birds fed diets with 6% of canola oil had greater alpha-tocopherol deposition into the eggs.

This study was carried out to evaluate the influence of age and supplementation with acetate of DL-alpha-tocopherol on the neutrophils oxidative metabolism of Holstein calves from birth to 150 days of age. Twenty calves were divided in two groups of ten animals. The animals of group Treatment received 2000UI of DL-alpha-tocopherol acetate, IM, at birth, and at 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days of age. The other group (Control), did not receive any supplementation. In both experimental groups the neutrophils oxidative metabolism showed little activity during the first 60 days of life, wich could indicate inefficiency of this important bactericidal mechanism. Neutrophils oxidative metabolism was not significantly affected by treatment with acetate of DL-alpha-tocopherol.
