This study was conducted to assess the effect of white mangrove (Langucularia racemosa) leaves (as feed additive) on some serum biochemistry in adult female rabbits. Twenty four mature female rabbits (does) were randomly allocated to four equal groups (Group A, B, C, and D) in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Group A was served with control diet, while the does of Group B, C and D were fed growers mash mixed with the additive dosed at 70 g, 80 g, and 90 g/kg of feed, respectively. Blood samples were collected from the animals for biochemical analysis at the end of the 12-week study. Sections of the liver were collected from same does for histological investigations. The results of the serum biochemistry showed no significant difference (p>0.05) in the values of Aspartate Transaminase (AST), while significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in the values of Alanine Transaminase (ALT), and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The histology of the liver was normal. It was concluded that the test ingredient (L. racemosa) was safe to be used in the diet of female rabbit dosed at 70-90g/kg feed since the enzyme levels remained within normal range of healthy rabbit.

The study aimed for the detection and serotyping of Foot and Mouth Disease virus (FMDV) circulating in Kapasia Upazila, Gazipur district of Bangladesh during 2013. Twelve samples comprising of tongue epithelium (n=8) and inter digital tissue (n=4) were collected from suspected cattle, and inocula were prepared. The inocula were inoculated into confluent BHK-21 cell line for virus propagation. After 3 subsequent passages; progressive cytopathic effects (CPE) specific for FMDV i.e., rounding and flattening of cells, breaking down of the intercellular bridge and finally cell death (almost 100%) were observed; these were indicative of successful virus propagation in the cells. Viral RNA was extracted, and Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) was performed using three sets of primers corresponding to the serotype and lsquo;O', and lsquo;Asia-1' and and lsquo;A', respectively. Out of the 12 samples, 10 (83.33%) were found to be positive for FMDV, and all of those were of serotype and lsquo;O'. It is concluded that FMDV serotype and lsquo;O' is circulating among the cattle of Gazipur district, Bangladesh. [J Adv Vet Anim Res 2015; 2(3.000): 291-295]

2015
John Palmisano | Michael Deininger
Canisters containing activated charcoal are commonly used in the laboratory setting to collect waste anesthetic gas (WAG). This requires the weighing of the WAG canister after each use and for investigators to maintain an accurate time log of anesthesia duration. A typical rodent anesthesia station may include the use of 3 WAG canisters; one for the anesthesia induction box, one for the operative table, and one for gas monitoring. To simplify the anesthesia breathing circuit, we have developed a “T” connector that replaces the need for having multiple WAG canisters. The “T” connector directs the waste anesthetic from multiple sources; the anesthesia induction box, operative table and gas monitor into a single WAG canister. Use of the “T” connector appears to be a safe, acceptable device that conveniently directs waste gas while improving charcoal adsorption within the canister. In addition, this device may have a positive impact on the environment with a secondary benefit of possible cost savings associated with the purchase and disposal of the hazardous waste contents.

2015
Fangui Min | Jing Wang | Yu Zhang
ESAT-6 is one of the most studied antigens in vaccine, diagnosis, and pathogenic mechanism of tuberculosis. In the present study, a meta-analysis was performed regarding the use of ESAT-6 based antibody detection test for diagnosing nonhuman primate (NHP) tuberculosis. Studies in English and Chinese were searched and selected strictly. Quality of included studies was assessed using the standardized QUADAS-2 tool. Heterogeneity was explored through meta-regression. Finally, eight studies were included with high degree of homogeneity. Quality of included studies was general satisfied except the bias of “patient selection” for the majority of serum samples were from experimental infections. Estimates of sensitivity ranged from 69% to 82%, while specificity ranged from 96% to 99%. Area under ROC curves and Q were 0.9503 and 0.8909 respectively, indicating a high diagnostic accuracy. Current evidence suggests that ESAT-6 based serodiagnosis has the potential to become useful diagnostic tools for NHP tuberculosis.

2015
Ibrahim Albokhadaim
The objective of the present study was to monitor the hypolipidemic and hypocholesterolemic effects of propolis in rats fed high cholesterol diet. The rats (n=32) were divided into four equal groups. The rats of group 1 (control) were fed basal diet, whereas rats of group 2 were fed basal diet mixed with cholesterol (1%). The rats of group 3 and 4 were fed high cholesterol diet (1%) mixed with propolis powder 1 and 2%, respectively. Hematological parameters were comparable among all groups. Cholesterol, triacylglycerol and ALT activities were increased significantly in rat fed high cholesterol diet as compared to control. Inclusion of propolis in high cholesterol diets reduced these parameters in serum. Hematological and biochemical findings were supported by histopathological analysis of liver tissues. Conclusively, 1% propolis was found as safe and enough to induce beneficial hypolipidemic and hypocholesterolemic effects in serum of rats fed high cholesterol diet.

A case of gangrenous mastitis was surgically managed in a cross breed doe aging 3.5 years and weighing 25 kg at SA Quadery Teaching Veterinary Hospital of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chittagong, Bangladesh. Confirmatory diagnosis of the case was done based on physical changes of udder, and identification of associated bacterial agents; two bacteria namely Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli could be isolated from the milk sample. Parenteral administration of combined antimicrobials (Gentamycin + Sulphadimidine + Trimethoprim) and concurrent intra-mammary infusion of antimicrobials (Streptomycin + Penicillin) along with supportive treatments for 7 days could not save the quarter rather the condition deteriorated. After performing the antibiogram of the isolated bacteria, only Ciprofloxacin was found to be sensitive. Mastectomy was done, and together with supportive medicine, Ciprofloxacin (dosed at 10 mg/kg body weight) was given intramuscularly as antimicrobial. The doe recovered without any complication after 7 days of post-treatment and management.

Hemorrhagic septicemia (HS) is an acute septicemic disease principally affecting cattle and buffaloes caused by specific serotypes B:2 and E:2 of Pasteurella multocida in Asia and Africa, respectively. Despite continuing researches on pathogenesis of P. multocida for several decades, the mechanisms by which these bacteria develop the diseases are poorly understood. Although the involvement of the nervous system in the disease progress of HS is rare under natural conditions, few reports indicated the involvement of the nervous system in outbreaks of HS in cattle and buffaloes. Additionally, recent pathogenesis studies in both mouse and buffalo experimental models reported the involvement of nervous system due to P. multocida B:2, with bacteriological and histopathological evidences. In this review, we summarized and discussed the updates on the involvement of the nervous system in pathogenesis of HS focusing on clinical signs, pathological and pathophysiological changes. This case report describes the necropsy findings of two potentially zoonotic parasites infecting the Philippine brown deer (Cervus mariannus) in Leyte Island, Philippines. A female deer aging approximately 5-year was presented for necropsy to the Diagnostic Laboratory at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Visayas State University. Gross pathology was recorded and the selected organs having lesion were collected for histopathological studies. Results showed severe necrotizing lesions in the nasal and palatal areas, infestation of calliphorid maggots, hepatic fibrosis, cholangitis, cholecystitis, lung atelectasis and duodenitis. Heavy ruminal fluke infection was also observed. Two potentially zoonotic parasites namely Fasciola gigantica and Sarcocystis spp. were identified. The Philippine brown deer appears to have a role in transmission and amplification of zoonotic parasites, and can also be threatened by diseases caused by the parasites.
