Mechanical properties of various suture materials and placement patterns tested with surrogate in vitro model constructs simulating laryngeal advancement tie-forward procedures in horses النص الكامل

Objective- To compare the mechanical properties of laryngeal tie-forward (LTF) surrogate constructs prepared with steel fixtures and No. 5 braided polyester or braided polyethylene by use of a standard or a modified suture placement technique. Sample- 32 LTF surrogate constructs. Procedures- Surrogate constructs were prepared with steel fixtures and sutures (polyester or polyethylene) by use of a standard or modified suture placement technique. Constructs underwent single-load-to-failure testing. Maximal load at failure, elongation at failure, stiffness, and suture breakage sites were compared among constructs prepared with polyester sutures by means of the standard (n = 10) or modified (10) technique and those prepared with polyethylene sutures with the standard (6) or modified (6) technique. Results- Polyethylene suture constructs had higher stiffness, higher load at failure, and lower elongation at failure than did polyester suture constructs. Constructs prepared with the modified technique had higher load at failure than did those prepared with the standard technique for both suture materials. All sutures broke at the knot in constructs prepared with the standard technique. Sutures broke at a location away from the knot in 13 of 16 constructs prepared with the modified technique (3 such constructs with polyethylene sutures broke at the knot). Conclusions and Clinical Relevance- Results suggested LTF surrogate constructs prepared with polyethylene sutures or the modified technique were stronger than those prepared with polyester sutures or the standard technique.

Parkinson is disease is known to exhibit progressive degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra via inhibition of glutathione metabolism. It is well known that 6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) induces Parkinson is disease-like symptoms, while resveratrol (3,5,4-trihydroxystilbene) has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In the present study, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in grapes and various plants, on 6-OHDA-induced cell damage to the SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell line. Resveratrol (5 and 10§) inhibited 6-OHDA (60 §)-induced cytotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells and induced a reduction of the number of apoptotic nuclei caused by 6-OHDA treatment. Additionally, the total apoptotic rate of cells treated with both resveratrol (10 §) and 6-OHDA (60§) was less than that of 6-OHDA treated cells. Resveratrol also dose-dependently (1, 5 and 10 §) scavenged reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by 6-OHDA in SH-SY5Y cells and prevented depletion of glutathione in response to the 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxicity in the glutathione assay. Overall, these results indicate that resveratrol exerts a neuroprotective effect against 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxicity of SH-SY5Y cells by scavenging ROS and preserving glutathione.

This study was conducted to determine the serum cardiac troponin I (cTnI) concentrations in clinically normal (uninfected) Korean Jindo dogs and those infected with Dirofilaria (D.) immitis. Forty Korean Jindo dogs (22 females, 18 males) were obtained from two kennels in the Boryeong area of Chungnam Province and the Daejeon area, Korea. Significantly higher cTnI concentrations were observed in D. immitis-infected dogs than clinically normal dogs. cTnI testing in addition to thoracic radiography, echocardiography, and electrocardiography shows promise as an additional method for diagnosis of heartworm infection.

A 12-year-old, castrated male Yorkshire terrier dog presented with frequent regurgitations that had begun 45 days earlier and become more progressive. Radiographs revealed an air-trap region behind the cranial esophageal sphincter muscle in the esophagus and esophagographies with barium contrast showed mild esophageal dilation with decreased motility. Esophageal motility increased within 5 min of neostigmine methylsulfate administration and acetylcholine receptor antibodies titer increased to beyond the normal range. Based on these findings, acquired myasthenia gravis with focal form was diagnosed, making this the first such case diagnosed by an acetylcholine receptor antibody test in Korea.

The pathological features of a mass in the back skin region of an 8-year-old castrated male dog are described herein. The cut section of the tumor was white to tan with a soft multilobulated mass containing hemorrhagic and necrotic foci and a mucinous-like composition. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of a mixture of lipocytes, lipoblasts, spindle cells and stellate cells and had a myxoid background. Oil red O staining revealed that the cytoplasm of neoplastic cells contained large numbers of lipid droplets. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for vimentin and S-100 protein. The skin mass was diagnosed as myxoid liposarcoma.

Preventive and therapeutic effects of egg yolk antibody, immunoglobulin Y (IgY), against canine parvovirus (CPV) was evaluated in 25 pups orally challenged with CPV-2a. Oral administration of IgY using powder, paste and coated paste delivery systems was compared. Each type of IgY was administered orally for 17 days from 3 days before challenge. The group of pups administered coated IgY showed mild symptoms such as a moderate decrease in total white blood cell count, no depression, vomiting and diarrhea when compared with other groups. The overall clinical score of the group of pups administered coated IgY was significantly lower than that of the challenge control group. However, mortality did not differ among groups because not all pups received symptomatic treatment. These results implied that oral treatment of coated IgY could improve therapeutic effects against CPV challenge if pups received symptomatic treatment.

An antimicrobial susceptibility test was conducted to compare the resistance rates among Campylobacter spp. isolates from dogs (n = 50) raised under diverse conditions and humans (n = 50). More than 60% of Campylobacter (C.) jejuni from dogs and humans showed resistance to nalidixic acid, enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. C. jejuni isolates from humans showed higher resistance to tetracycline (83.3%) and ampicillin (91.3%) than those from dogs. None of the C. jejuni or Campylobacter coli isolates from humans or dogs were resistant to erythromycin. Overall, 85% of Campylobacter spp. isolates showed a multidrug resistant phenotype. Nucleotide sequencing analysis of the gryA gene showed that 100% of NA. /CIP. olates from dogs and humans had the Thr-86. h-Ile mutation, which is associated with fluoroquinolone resistance. flaA PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) typing to differentiate the isolates below the species level revealed 12 different clusters out of 73 strains. The human isolates belonged to eight different RFLP clusters, while five clusters contained dog and human isolates.

Four viruses showing cytopathic effects in MDBK cells were isolated from brains of cattle showing downer cattle syndrome in 2012. The isolates were confirmed to belong to the genus Rubulavirus of the subfamily Paramyxovirinae. Isolate QIA-B1201 had the ability to hemagglutinate red blood cells from several species of animals and was capable of adsorbing guinea pig erythrocytes on the surface of infected Vero cells. Nucleotide sequence analysis showed that two isolates (QIA-B1201 and QIA-B1204) had high similarity with other human and animal PIV5 isolates ranging from 98.1 to 99.8%. The highest sequence similarity of the two isolates corresponded to strain KNU-11 (99.8% at the nucleotide and amino acid level) isolated from suckling piglets in Korea in 2012. To evaluate the virulence of strain QIA-B1201, we inoculated bPIV5 into 5 week-old mice via both the intraperitoneal and intracranial route. Body weight was not significantly altered in mice inoculated with QIA-B1201. In this study, we isolated and characterized novel bPIV5s from brain samples showing downer cattle syndrome, but were not able to elucidate the pathogenicity of the bPIV5s in mice.

Salmonella are causative agents of gastroenteritis and systemic disease in animals. The invA gene was selected as a target sequence of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for diagnosis of Salmonella infection. The detection limits for broth dilution, spiked feces and enrichment were 10. 10. and 10. CFUs/mL, respectively. The LAMP assay developed in the present study may be a reliable method for detection of Salmonella spp. in pig feces.

An 11-year-old castrated male Maltese weighing 3.6 kg and a 12-year-old intact female Shih-tzu weighing 6.5 kg were admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University with decompensatory congestive heart failure. Diuretic resistance was suspected due to long term diuretic therapy with furosemide. However, the patients improved after the furosemide treatment was changed to torsemide, demonstrating the benefits of application of torsemide to treat diuretic resistance caused by long term use of furosemide. These findings suggest that torsemide should be applied for treatment of diuretic resistance caused by long term use of furosemide.
