Purpose. To study the drought resistance of plants of English roses varieties. Methods. Field, anatomical, biometric. The drought resistance of plants in the field was assessed according to S. S. Pyatnitsky 6-point scale (1961). The number of stomata per unit area of the leaf blade was determined using a JSM-6700F scanning electron microscope (JEOL, Tokyo, Japan).  Results. The drought resistance of plants of English rose varieties was investigated both in the field and laboratory conditions. According to visual observations, during periods with a low level of moisture supply, leaf turgor did not decrease; therefore, the field drought resistance of all varieties was estimated at 5 points. According to the parameters of stomatal density per unit of leaf area, varieties that have the maximum and minimum values of this indicator were identified. Conclusions. It was found that all studied varieties of English roses from the collection of the State Dendrological Park “Alexandria” of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine are quite drought-resistant in the field. But they differed significantly in the density of stomata per unit area. The largest average number of stomata per 0.5 mm2 (163.67±7.93 pcs.) was recorded in the variety ‘Alan Titchmarsh’, the lowest (47.67±1.94) – in ‘Charles Austin’. Comparison of data on leaf morphology of English roses and stomata density showed that varieties with smaller leaf sizes (‘Cottage Rose’, ‘Fisherman Friend’, ‘Noble Antony’, ‘Crocus Rose’) have a greater number of stomata per unit area, which indicates their high drought resistance. The data obtained from field and laboratory studies will be taken into account in the formation of recommendations on the use of roses for landscaping urban areas, where plants may find themselves in more extreme conditions than in an arboretum. | Мета. Purpose. To reveal the raw material potential of the representatives of the genus Paeonia L. introduced in the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NBG) in terms of the content of biologically active compounds. Methods. Introduced plants of the genus Paeonia: P. lactiflora Pall., P. officinalis L. and its hybrid forms: P. officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’, F1 (P. officinalis ‘Rub­ra Plena’ ´ P. peregrina Mill.), cultivar NBG ‘Kvazimodo’ (P. lactiflora ‘M-lle Jeanne Riviere’ ´ F1 [P. officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’ ´ P. peregrina)], P. anomala L. were the object of the research. The content of polyphenolic compounds, homopolysaccharides, ascorbic acid and other substances was determined by spectrophotometry, titrimetry and colorimetry. The analysis of biologically active compounds was carried out by the method of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results. Species and varietal differences in the amount of polyphenols in plants of various species and forms were determined. It was found that the roots of the studied F1 plants (P. officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’ ´ P. peregrina), cultivar NBG ‘Kvazimodo’, P. lactiflora contain a much higher amount of polysaccharides compared to the roots of P. anomala. In peony plants, the average share of vitamin C is 37.65% and varies among representatives of the genus in the range from 22.10 ± 2.18 [F1 (P. officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’ ´ P. peregrina)] to 47.60 ± 3.69 (P. anomala) and 49.30 ± 5.50% (P. lactiflora). The maximum content of carotenoids was found in the roots of P. officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’ (2.10 ± 0.21 mg%) and F1 (P. officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’ ´ P. peregrina) (2.20 ± 0.13 mg%). A significant amount of free gallic acid was observed in the roots of P. anomala, and halotannins in P. lactiflora. Conclusions. The results of phytochemical studies of plants of species, hybrids and cultivars of the genus Paeonia introduced in the  M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the NAS of Ukraine showed that they accumulate a significant level of basic biologically active compounds: flavonoids, tannins, mono- and polysaccharides, pigments roots of P. lactiflora and P. officinalis are promising in terms of the complex of active ingredients, since they contain them in greater quantities than those of P. anomala. Hybrid forms of P. officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’, F1 (P. officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’ ´ P. peregrina), cultivar ‘Kvazimodo’, created on the basis of these species, are not inferior to the parent species in terms of the content of phenolic compounds, sugars, pigments and ascorbic acid. In the roots, the share of peoniflorin is for P. lactiflora (1.95%),  anomala (1.09%), P. officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’ (0.95%), P. officinalis (0.78%). The studied species, hybrids and cultivars are offered for cultivation in the purpose of harvesting medicinal raw materials as a source of biologically active compounds with the possibility of supplementing or even repla­cing the official species of anomalous peony (P. anomala). | Мета. Purpose. To determine mineral composition of plants of species of the genus Artemisia (A. dracunculus L., A. abrotanum L. and A. argyi H.Lév. & Vaniot) to determine the possibility of their safe use in the food and pharmaceutical industries of Ukraine. Methods. X‑ray fluorescence method for determining the elemental composition of plant raw materials. Results. The content of mineral elements in plants of the genus Artemisia was determined depending on their ability to absorb elements from the soil and accumulate in the roots and organs of the aerial part was determined. The quantitative content of 21 macro- and microelements was established, and some peculiarities of their migration and distribution in the soil – roots – plant system were revealed. In particular, the aerial part of the studied plants contains K, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn, which are the most important elements in the life of the plant organism. The content of mesoelements Ca and S is quite high. The amount of toxic elements Pb, Sr and Zr in plants is insignificant. Elements K and S accumulate in the aerial part. The content of elements in the aerial part of plants by decreasing their concentration can be represented in the form of the following series: for Artemisia dracunculus – S> K> Ca> Cl> Fe> Sr> Zn> Mn> Cu> Zr> Rb> Br> Cr; for A. abrotanum – K> Ca> S> Cl> Fe> Zn> Sr> Mn> Cu> Br> Cr> Co> Zr> Rb> Ni; for A. argyi – K> Ca> S> Fe> Cl> Sr> Zn> Mn> Co> Zr> Cu> Rb> Br> Se. The content of toxic elements in the studied plants was lower than the maximum allowable concentrations for plant raw materials and food. Conclusions. For the first time under conditions of introduction in the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the NAS of Ukraine in the plants Artemisia dracunculus, A. abrotanum and A. argyi the content of macro- and microelements, which are directly related to the metabolism of biologically active compounds, was determined. The peculiarities of their distribution by plant organs during the transition from soil to aboveground mass have been clarified. The obtained results can be used to evaluate and compare the quality of plant raw materials of the genus Artemisia, to determine the pharmacological properties of these plants associated with some elements of the mineral composition, and their use in the medical and food industries. The obtained data have both scientific and practical significance in the selection of economically valuable plant species for the enrichment of the cultivated flora of Ukraine. | Мета. Визначити мінеральний склад рослин видів роду Artemisia (А. dracunculus L., A. abrotanum L. та A. argyi H.Lév. & Vaniot) для з’ясування можливості їх безпечного використання у харчовій та фармацевтичній галузях промисловості України. Методи. Рентгено-флуоресцентний метод визначення елементного складу рослинної сировини. Результати. Визначено вміст мінеральних елементів у рослинах роду Artemisia залежно від їхньої здатності поглинати елементи з ґрунту й накопичувати в коренях та органах наземної частини. Установлено кількісний уміст 21 макро- й мікроелемента, а також виявлено деякі особливості їхньої міграції та розподілу в системі ґрунт–корені–рослина. Зокрема, наземна частина  досліджуваних рослин містить K, Fe, Cu, Zn та Mn, які є найважливішими елементами в житті рослинного організму. Досить високим є вміст мезоелементів Ca та S. Кількість токсичних елементів Pb, Sr і Zr у рослинах незначна. Елементи K і S накопичуються в наземній частині. Уміст елементів у наземній частині рослин за зменшенням їхньої концентрації можна представити у вигляді таких рядів: для Artemisia dracunculus –  S> K> Ca> Cl> Fe> Sr> Zn> Mn> Cu> Zr> Rb> Br> Cr; для A. abrotanum – K> Ca> S> Cl> Fe> Zn> Sr> Mn> Cu> Br> Cr> Co> Zr> Rb> Ni; для A. argyi – K> Ca> S> Fe> Cl> Sr> Zn> Mn> Co> Zr> Cu> Rb> Br> Se. Уміст токсичних елементів у досліджуваних рослинах знаходився в межах гранично допустимих концентрацій для рослинної сировини та продуктів харчування. Висновки. Уперше в умовах інтродукції в Національному ботанічному саду ім. М. М. Гришка НАН України в рослинах Artemisia dracunculus, A. abrotanum та A. argyi визначено вміст макро- та мікроелементів, які безпосередньо пов’язані з метаболізмом біологічно активних сполук. З’ясовано особливості їхнього розподілу за органами рослин при переході з ґрунту в наземну масу. Отримані результати можуть бути використані для оцінювання та порівняння якості рослинної сировини представників роду Artemisia, з’ясування фармакологічних властивостей цих рослин, пов’язаних з деякими елементами мінерального складу, і використання їх у медичній та харчовій галузях. Отримані дані мають як наукове, так і практичне значення в доборі господарсько-цінних видів рослин для збагачення культигенної флори України.

Cobalt is a transition metal located in the fourth row of the periodic table and is a neighbor of iron and nickel. It has been considered an essential element for prokaryotes, human beings, and other mammals, but its essentiality for plants remains obscure. In this article, we proposed that cobalt (Co) is a potentially essential micronutrient of plants. Co is essential for the growth of many lower plants, such as marine algal species including diatoms, chrysophytes, and dinoflagellates, as well as for higher plants in the family Fabaceae or Leguminosae. The essentiality to leguminous plants is attributed to its role in nitrogen (N) fixation by symbiotic microbes, primarily rhizobia. Co is an integral component of cobalamin or vitamin B12, which is required by several enzymes involved in N2 fixation. In addition to symbiosis, a group of N2 fixing bacteria known as diazotrophs is able to situate in plant tissue as endophytes or closely associated with roots of plants including economically important crops, such as barley, corn, rice, sugarcane, and wheat. Their action in N2 fixation provides crops with the macronutrient of N. Co is a component of several enzymes and proteins, participating in plant metabolism. Plants may exhibit Co deficiency if there is a severe limitation in Co supply. Conversely, Co is toxic to plants at higher concentrations. High levels of Co result in pale-colored leaves, discolored veins, and the loss of leaves and can also cause iron deficiency in plants. It is anticipated that with the advance of omics, Co as a constitute of enzymes and proteins and its specific role in plant metabolism will be exclusively revealed. The confirmation of Co as an essential micronutrient will enrich our understanding of plant mineral nutrition and improve our practice in crop production.

Визначити мінеральний склад рослин видів роду Artemisia (А. dracunculus L., A. abrotanum L. та A. argyi H.Lév. & Vaniot) для з’ясування можливості їх безпечного використання у харчовій та фармацевтичній галузях промисловості України. Кількість токсичних елементів Pb, Sr і Zr у рослинах незначна. Елементи K і S накопичуються в наземній частині. Уміст елементів у наземній частині рослин за зменшенням їхньої концентрації можна представити у вигляді таких рядів: для Artemisia dracunculus –  S> K> Ca> Cl> Fe> Sr> Zn> Mn> Cu> Zr> Rb> Br> Cr; для A. abrotanum – K> Ca> S> Cl> Fe> Zn> Sr> Mn> Cu> Br> Cr> Co> Zr> Rb> Ni; для A. argyi – K> Ca> S> Fe> Cl> Sr> Zn> Mn> Co> Zr> Cu> Rb> Br> Se. Уміст токсичних елементів у досліджуваних рослинах знаходився в межах гранично допустимих концентрацій для рослинної сировини та продуктів харчування. Висновки. Уперше в умовах інтродукції в Національному ботанічному саду ім. М. М. Гришка НАН України в рослинах Artemisia dracunculus, A. abrotanum та A. argyi визначено вміст макро- та мікроелементів, які безпосередньо пов’язані з метаболізмом біологічно активних сполук. З’ясовано особливості їхнього розподілу за органами рослин при переході з ґрунту в наземну масу. Отримані результати можуть бути використані для оцінювання та порівняння якості рослинної сировини представників роду Artemisia, з’ясування фармакологічних властивостей цих рослин, пов’язаних з деякими елементами мінерального складу, і використання їх у медичній та харчовій галузях. Отримані дані мають як наукове, так і практичне значення в доборі господарсько-цінних видів рослин для збагачення культигенної флори України.

Мета. Визначення кількісного та якісного елементного складу рослин видів Artemisia annua L., A. ludoviciana Nutt. та A. austriaca L. за умов інтродукції в Національному ботанічному саду імені М. М. Гришка НАН України.Методи. Елементний склад рослинної сировини визначали рентгенофлуоресцентним методом.Результати. Вміст мінеральних елементів у рослинах залежить від їхньої індивідуальної здатності поглинати елементи з ґрунту та накопичувати їх у коренях і надземній частині. Зразки рослин трьох видів полину, вирощених у НБС, досліджували протягом 2019–2022 рр. у фазі цвітіння. Визначено якісний і кількісний вміст 21 макро- та мікроелемента в ґрунті та 17 – в досліджуваних рослинах, а також деякі особливості міграції цих елементів у системі ґрунт – корінь – трава. Встановлено, що надземна частина досліджуваних видів містить найважливіші для життя рослин елементи – K, Fe, Cu, Zn і Mn. Мезоелементи Са і S присутні в достатній кількості. Елементи Nb, Y, Ti, V, Cr виявлено лише у ґрунті. Ni та Se містили тільки рослини A. annua, тоді як Pb – A. annua та A. ludoviciana. A. ludoviciana продемонструвала схильність до накопичення заліза в надземній масі. Кількість токсичних елементів у рослинах не перевищувала гранично допустимих концентрацій для рослинної сировини та продуктів харчування.Висновки. Визначено вміст основних макро- та мікроелементів у ґрунті та рослинах A. annua, A. ludoviciana й A. austriaca за умов інтродукції в НБС імені М. М. Гришка, а також особливості накопичення елементів окремими органами рослин під час їх транспортування з ґрунту в надземну частину. Встановлено схильність рослин A. ludoviciana до накопичення високих концентрацій заліза в коренях і надземній частині, а також можливість накопичення Ni та Se рослинами A. annua. Результати досліджень будуть корисними для прогнозування й оцінки інтродукції нових перспективних видів роду Artemisia, селекції у процесі створення нових сортів полинів, визначення їхніх фармакологічних властивостей і прийняття рішень щодо доцільності їх використання у чаях та харчових продуктах. | The purpose of this study was to investigate mineral composition of the plants species Artemisia annua L., A. ludoviciana Nutt. and A. austriaca L.Methods. Determination of the elemental composition of plant material was carried out by the X-ray fluorescence method.Results. The content of mineral elements in plants depends on their individual ability to absorb elements from the soil and accumulate them in the roots, leaves and flowers. Plant samples of three species of wormwood were grown and studied during the flowering phase under conditions of introduction in M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NBG) during 2019–2022. The qualitative and quantitative content of different macro- and microelements in the soil and plants were investigated. It was shown that aerial parts of the investigated plants accumulate the most important elements for the plants life, such as – K, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn. Mesoelements Ca and S are present in sufficient quantities also. Elements Nb, Y, Ti, V, Cr were detected in soil, but were not determined in plants. Only A. annua plants contains Ni and Se, while A. ludoviciana and A. annua plants contain Pb. The amount of toxic elements in plants did not exceed the maximum permissible concentrations for vegetable raw materials and food products.Conclusion. Content of the main macro- and microelements was determined in the plants A. annua, A. ludoviciana and A. austriaca growing in NBG. The tendency of plants A. ludoviciana to accumulate high concentrations of iron in the roots and aerial part was observed. The obtained data will be useful for forecasting and evaluating the results of introduction of new promising species of the genus Artemisia, in breeding of new varieties of wormwood, to determine their pharmacological properties and to make a decision about the feasibility of using them in herbal tea and food products.

Мета. Визначити мінеральний склад рослин видів роду Artemisia (А. dracunculus L., A. abrotanum L. та A. argyi H.Lév. & Vaniot) для з’ясування можливості їх безпечного використання у харчовій та фармацевтичній галузях промисловості України. Методи. Рентгено-флуоресцентний метод визначення елементного складу рослинної сировини. Результати. Визначено вміст мінеральних елементів у рослинах роду Artemisia залежно від їхньої здатності поглинати елементи з ґрунту й накопичувати в коренях та органах наземної частини. Установлено кількісний уміст 21 макро- й мікроелемента, а також виявлено деякі особливості їхньої міграції та розподілу в системі ґрунт–корені–рослина. Зокрема, наземна частина досліджуваних рослин містить K, Fe, Cu, Zn та Mn, які є найважливішими елементами в житті рослинного організму. Досить високим є вміст мезоелементів Ca та S. Antecedentes y Objetivos: Los habitantes de la Meseta Purépecha conservan un excelente conocimiento ancestral sobre plantas medicinales utilizadas para tratar afecciones dermatológicas que no ha sido documentado. Un estudio etnofarmacológico fue realizado en esta región para recopilar información sobre el uso de plantas medicinales y preparaciones herbarias utilizadas en la zona para el tratamiento de afecciones dermatológicas, con el objetivo de difundir la medicina tradicional Purépecha e identificar plantas prometedoras en el desarrollo de tratamientos para afecciones cutáneas. Métodos: El estudio se realizó en los 21 municipios que componen la Meseta Purépecha. Se entrevistó a un total de 86 habitantes locales (62 mujeres y 24 hombres). Los datos se analizaron cuantitativamente mediante la determinación del valor de uso, nivel de fidelidad y el factor de consenso informante. Resultados clave: En total 97 especies de plantas pertenecientes a 47 familias fueron documentadas para el tratamiento de 19 afecciones dermatológicas en la Meseta Purépecha. Asteraceae fue la familia principal entre las plantas colectadas (20.61%), seguida de Lamiaceae (13.40%) y Solanaceae (5.15%). La mayor cantidad de plantas se utilizó para tratamiento de heridas (40.20%), inflamación de la piel (37.11%) y erupciones cutáneas (37.11%). La principal parte utilizada de la planta fue la aérea (34.75%). Las plantas medicinales con mayores valores de uso fueron Heterotheca inuloides (0.53), Aloe vera (0.37) y Oenothera rosea (0.21). La comparación de los resultados con la literatura etnomedicinal reveló que 8.25% de las plantas utilizadas en la Meseta Purépecha se registraron por primera vez para tratamiento de afecciones dermatológicas. Conclusiones: Este estudio proporciona nueva información sobre plantas medicinales utilizadas en la Meseta Purépecha para tratamiento de enfermedades cutáneas. Se requieren futuras investigaciones farmacológicas y toxicológicas para demostrar la eficacia y seguridad de estas especies para el tratamiento de afecciones dermatológicas.

The inbred “SJ11-3” pepper was cultured in yellow brown soil, paddy soil, fluvo-aquic soil, and pastoral soil, and the factors affecting the absorption of trace elements and fruit quality were analyzed. The results showed that the physicochemical properties of the soils were significantly different, which led to differences in the nutritional quality of pepper fruits. The pH value had a significant effect on the absorption of trace elements in pepper. The increase of pH promoted the absorption of magnesium and molybdenum but inhibited the absorption of zinc, copper, manganese, and iron. The stepwise multivariable regression analysis showed that the amount of molybdenum in soil was the main factor affecting the total amino acid content of pepper. Total nitrogen, zinc, and copper were the main factors that contributed to the soluble sugar content of pepper, and the available potassium was the major determinant of the vitamin C content of pepper. This study provides new insight on the pepper fruit quality grown on different types of soil with varying levels of trace elements.

Background and Aims: Inhabitants of the Purépecha Plateau preserve an excellent ancestral knowledge on medicinal plants used for dermatological affections, which has not been documented. An ethnopharmacological survey was carried out in this region to gather information on the use of medicinal plants and herbal preparations for treating dermatological affections, to disseminate the Purépecha indigenous knowledge and identifying promising plants for developing new formulations for cutaneous conditions.Methods: The study was conducted in the 21 municipalities that compose the Purépecha Plateau. A total of 86 local inhabitants (62 women and 24 men) were interviewed. The data were quantitatively analyzed through the determination of the use value, fidelity level and informant consensus factor.Key results: A total of 97 plant species belonging to 47 families were documented for treating 19 dermatological conditions on the Purépecha Plateau. Asteraceae was the leading family among the collected medicinal plants (20.61%), followed by Lamiaceae (13.40%) and Solanaceae (5.15%). The largest number of plants was used for the treatment of cuts (40.20%), skin inflammation (37.11%) and rash (37.11%). The aerial parts were the most commonly used (34.75%). The medicinal plant species with larger use values were Heterotheca inuloides (0.53), Aloe vera (0.37) and Oenothera rosea (0.21). The comparison of results with ethnomedicinal literature worldwide revealed that 8.25% of plants used on the Purépecha Plateau were recorded for the first time for the treatment of dermatological affections.Conclusions: This study provides new information on medicinal plants used on the Purépecha Plateau to treat cutaneous diseases. Purpose. To develop a multidimensional model of the data storage for the qualification examination of plant varieties for fixing meteorological conditions in conjunction with the phenological stages of development of varieties that undergo DUS and SVD expertise. Methods. To conduct research with the establishment of the main structural ele­ments of a multidimensional data warehouse, methods of induction, deduction, analysis and synthesis were used. In the design process of the storage facility, W. H. Inmon’s concept was applied, adapted for the agricultural and agricultural business. Results. The stages of qualification examination of plant varieties were analyzed and methodolo­gical approaches to the creation of a multidimensional data warehouse model were considered. The features of the use of data storages for storing the results of qualification exa­mination of plant varieties for distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS) and suitability of a variety for dissemination in Ukraine (SVD) were highlighted. Particular attention was paid to the implementation of the interconnection between the results of the qualification examination of plant varie­ties with the data of meteorological observations at various phenological stages of plant growth and development, according to the records in the electronic field journal. The logical data model of the data warehouse was designed and implemented in the MS SQL Server environment. Conclusions. Sources of data entry into data warehouses were determined and a multidimensional data warehouse model was implemented according to the “snowflake” scheme. The diagram of the data warehouse was presented, which provided a link between the meteorological conditions of the field experiments and the initial data of the qualification examination, and had four tables of measurements. For each dimension table and fact table, an attribute composition of the data was defined. The data warehouse was practically used to analyze the influence of weather conditions on the indicators of DUS and SVD examinations. | Мета. Розробити багатовимірну модель сховища даних кваліфікаційної експертизи сортів рослин для фіксації метеорологічних умов у взаємозв’язку з фенологічними стадіями розвитку сортів, які проходять ВОС та ПСП експертизу. Purpose is to evaluate the plant breeding material of alfalfa by the indices of water metabolism in different conditions of humidification, to determine the patterns of their manifestation, correlation ties between them and drought tolerance, to point out the best material for introduction into the plant breeding process. Methods. Field, laboratory, statistical. Results. During 2017–2020, 9 populations of alfalfa were studied by the indices of water regime: water content in the tissues, water deficit and water holding capacity of the leaves in the conditions of irrigation and natural humidification. The regularities of their manifestation were determined. By the data on the water content in leaves it was found out that it is high at irrigation (81.88; 79.63; 78.42%) and low (69.20; 70.81; 71.84%) without irrigation. Water content in leaves is closely related with water deficit, but the connection is inverse (r = -0.986 at irrigation and r = -0.863 at natural humidification). Water deficit in the populations was the highest (50.28–29.96–33.0%) in the stress conditions (without irrigation) and decreased in the plants at irrigation to 12.64–17.37–22.04%. Water deficit relates to water holding capacity of leaves: the greater water deficit, the lower water holding capacity. In the irrigated conditions, 13.9 to 17.3% was lost in 2 hours of the leaves wilting and 30.3–34.6% after 8 hours, and 3.78–4.31% in 1 hour. Water holding capacity ranged from 82.7 to 85.9% after 2 hours of the leaves wilting, and 61.6 to 69.7% after 8 hours. In the conditions of natural humidification, in the first 2 hours after wilting, the water content decreased by 8.5–11.7%, after 8 hours – by 16.5–22.6%. Water loss per one hour ranged from 1.78 to 2.84%, 1.5–2.0 times less than in irrigated plants. Water holding capacity was 82.3–91.5 and 77.0–91.5% after 2 and 8 hours, respectively. It was high (90.3–91.5 and 83.4–91.5%) in the following populations: LRH, M.q./M.agr., A.r.d. and M.agr.C. at water loss of 1.78–2.15%. A high inverse connection was found between water loss and water holding capacity after 2 and 8 hours: r = -0.652 and r = -0.963, respectively. There was a significant positive relationship between water holding capacity and drought tolerance (r = 0.597–0.696). High drought tolerance (56.9–58.2%) was recorded in the populations: M.agr.C., M.q./M.agr., LRH and Ram. D. Conclusions. Regularities of changes in tissue water content, deficit and water holding capacity of alfalfa leaves during irrigation and in conditions of natural humidification were revealed. The relationships between water deficit and water holding capacity, water loss and water holding capacity, water hol­ding capacity and drought tolerance were determined. The best populations with high drought tolerance were selected to be introduced into the plant breeding process. | Мета. Упродовж 2017–2020 рр. досліджено дев’ять популяцій люцерни за показниками водного режиму: обводненню тканин, водного дефіциту та водоутримувальної здатності листків в умовах зрошення та природного зволоження. Установлено закономірності їхнього прояву. За даними по обводненню листя, тобто показнику вмісту води, він є високим за зрошення (81,88; 79,63; 78,42%) і низьким без зрошення (69,20; 70,81; 71,84%). З обводненням листків тісно пов’язаний водний дефіцит, але вони знаходяться в зворотній залежності один з одним (r = -0,986 при зрошенні і r = -0,863 в умовах природного зволоження). Максимальним водний дефіцит у популяцій був у стресовій ситуації (без поливу) – 50,28; 29,96; 33,0% і знижувався в рослин за зрошення до 12,64; 17,37; 22,04%. Водний дефіцит пов’язаний з водоутримувальною здатністю листя: чим він більший, тим нижче водоутримувальна здатність, що визначається здатністю утримувати воду. В умовах зрошення втрачалося від 13,9 до 17,3% за 2 години в’янення листків та 30,3–34,6% після 8 годин, а за 1 годину – 3,78–4,31%. Водоутримувальна здатність коливалася в межах 82,7–85,9% через 2 години в’янення листя та 61,6 до 69,7% через 8 годин. В умовах природного зволоження в перші 2 години після в’янення вміст води зменшився на 8,5–11,7%, через 8 годин – на 16,5–22,6%. За 1 годину втрата води коливалася від 1,78 до 2,84%, у 1,5–2,0 раза менше, ніж у рослин, що вирощувалися в умовах зрошення. Водоутримувальна здатність становила 82,3–91,5 та 77,0–91,5% через 2 та 8 годин відповідно. Високою (90,3–91,5 і 83,4–91,5%) вона була в популяцій LRH, M.g./M.agr., A.r.d. і M.agr.C. за втрати води 1,78–2,15%. Установлено середній та сильний обернений зв’язок втрати води з водоутримувальною здатністю через 2 і 8 годин: r = -0,652 та r = -0,963 відповідно. Визначено середній позитивний зв’язок між водоутримувальною здатністю й посухостійкістю (r = 0,597–0,696). Високу посухостійкість ( 56,9–58,2%) проявили популяції M.agr.C., M.g./M.agr., LRH і Ram.d. Висновки. Установлено закономірності зміни обводнення тканин, дефіциту й водоутримувальної здатності листя люцерни за зрошення та в умовах природного зволоження. Визначено взаємозв’язки між водним дефіцитом і водоутримувальною здатністю; втратою води і водоутримувальною здатністю; водоутримувальною здатністю та посухостійкістю. Виділені кращі популяції з високою посухостійкістю, які будуть включені в селекційний процес.

Мета. Оцінити селекційний матеріал люцерни за показниками водного обміну в різних умовах зволоження, установити закономірності їхнього вияву, взаємозв’язок між ними та посухостійкістю. Виділити кращі для включення в селекційний процес. Методи. Польовий, лабораторний, статистичний. Результати. Purpose. Identification of spring barley promising breeding lines with combination of adaptive traits under conditions of the central part of the Ukrainian Forest-Steppe. Methods. Field trial, laboratory-field analysis of drought tolerance, statistical and graphical analysis of experimental data. Results. The analysis of variance of the AMMI model showed that the largest contribution to the general variation (85.78%) had environmental conditions (years of research). The value of the genotype was 8.21%, and the genotype by environment interaction was 6.01%. The first and second principal components of both AMMI and GGE biplot explained more than 85% of the genotype-environment interaction. Spring barley breeding lines ‘Deficiens 5162’, ‘Nutans 5073’ and ‘Deficiens 5161’ had the superior combination of yield performance and relative stability through the years according to GGE biplot. With GYT biplot analysis it has been determined that the breeding lines ‘Deficiens 5162’ and ‘Nutans 5073’ also significantly predominated over the other genotypes in terms of combination of yield performance and a number of other traits – 1000 kernels weight, drought tolerance, resistance to pathogens. Breeding lines ‘Deficiens 5161’, ‘Nutans 4966’, ‘Nutans 4705’, ‘Nutans 4816’, ‘Nutans 5184’, ‘Nutans 5193’, which exceeded the mean value in the trial in terms of combination of yield performance and a number of adaptive traits may have practical significance in the breeding process for creation of new initial material. Conclusions. As a result of the complex evaluation when using AMMI, GGE biplot and GYT biplot graphical models the breeding lines ‘Deficiens 5162’ and ‘Nutans 5073’ with the optimal combination of yield, stability, thousand kernel weight and tolerance to abiotic and biotic environmental factors have been identified | Мета. Селекційні лінії ‘Дефіцієнс 5161’, ‘Нутанс 4966’, ‘Нутанс 4705’, ‘Нутанс 4816’, ‘Нутанс 5184’, ‘Нутанс 5193’, які перевищували середнє значення в досліді за поєднанням врожайності та низки адаптивних ознак, можуть мати практичну цінність у селекційному процесі для створення нового вихідного матеріалу. Висновки. Cultivars and varieties of three Lycium species (Lycium barbarum, L. chinense, L. truncatum) were studied in the period from 2016 till 2019. The following morphometric measurments were conducted: seeds weight, seeds length, seeds width and index of seeds shape. Basic statistical analyses were performed using PAST 2.17. Hierarchical cluster analyses of similarity between genotypes were computed on the basis of the Bray-Curtis similarity index. Correlation between traits was determined using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results. Cultivars and varieties of different species of Lycium varied in weight, shape, and size of seeds. Seed weight varied from 0.54 to 3.54 mg, seed length from 1.90 to 3.06 mm, seed width from 1.43 to 2.53 mm. The shape indexes of seeds were found ranging from 0.73 to 0.80. The analysis of coefficient of variation showed the difference of variability in morphometric characteristics between some Lycium spp. cultivars and varieties. The most variable features: seeds weight (8.51–28.22%) and seeds length (5.07–24.81%) are important parameters for selection. The use of cluster analysis made it possible to establish the similarity between the species of the studied Lycium species. Conclusions. Diagnostic signs by seed morphometry for differentiation of Lycium species were revealed. The analysis of coefficient of variation showed the difference of variability in morphometric characteristics between some Lycium cultivars and varieties. The most variable characteristics of the studied genotypes were seed weight and length, which are important parameters for selection because they determine the pulp content and number of seeds, as well as the ratio of these parameters between them. It is through variability that promising varieties with low seed weight and length can be selected, Due to securing them later vegetatively. | Мета. Оцінити морфометричні показники насіння Lycium spp. колекції Національного ботанічного саду імені М. М. Гришка (НБС) НАН України. Методи. Упродовж 2016–2019 рр. досліджено 21 генотип (10 сортів і 11 форм) трьох видів (Lycium barbarum, L. chinense, L. truncatum). Установлено морфометричні показники насіння (маса, довжина, ширина та індекс форми). Статистичний аналіз виконували за допомогою PAST 2.17. Ієрархічний кластерний аналіз подібності генотипів здійснено за індексом подібності Брей-Кертіса. Наявніть зв’язків між параметрами встановлювали за коефіцієнтом кореляції Пірсона. Результати. Сорти та форми різних видів рослин Lycium варіювали за масою, розміром та формою насіння. Морфометричні параметри насіння були такими: маса – від 0,54 до 3,54 мг, довжина – від 1,90 до 3,06 мм, ширина – від 1,43 до 2,53 мм. Величина індексу форми насіння становила від 0,73 до 0,80. Аналіз коефіцієнта варіації показав різну мінливість морфометричних характеристик сортів та форм різних видів Lycium. Наймінливішою є маса насіння (8,51–28,22%) та його довжина (5,07–24,81%), які є важливими параметрами для селекції. Використання кластерного аналізу дало змогу встановити генетичні зв’язки між сортами й формами Lycium та розподілити їх у два основних кластери. Висновки. Виявлено діагностичні ознаки морфометричних параметрів насіння для ідентифікації видів Lycium. Аналіз коефіцієнта варіації показав мінливість морфомет­ричних характеристик між деякими сортами та формами Lycium. Наймінливішими параметрами досліджуваних генотипів були маса та довжина насіння. Останні є важливими для селекції, оскільки від них залежить уміст м’якушу та кількість насіння, а також співвідношення цих параметрів між ними. Завдяки мінливості можна дібрати перспективні сорти з невеликими масою та довжиною насіння, закріпивши їх потім вегетативно.

Purpose. To reveal the peculiarities of the seasonal rhythm of growth and development of Itoh Group peony cultivars in the conditions of the M. M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Methods. The objects of research were plants of 24 cultivars of Itoh Group peonies. The research was conducted on the experimental field of the Department of Flowering and Ornamental Plants of the M. M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine during 2017–2020. The sum of effective temperatures was calculated by summing the daily air temperatures reduced by the biological zero.                 Results. The phenological phases of Ito Group cultivars growth were determined. Phenological spectra for different groups are presented. It was determined that the flowering of early cultivars: ‘First Arrival’, ‘Hillary’, ‘Julia Rose’, ‘Morning Lilac’, ‘Old Rose Dandy’, ‘Sonoma Apricot’ starts at the sum of effective temperatures ≥ 400 °С. The middle group hybrids bloom when the sum of temperatures reaches 450 °С. This group includes: ‘Bartzella’, ‘Callie’s Memory’, ‘Cora Louise’, ‘Lollipop’, ‘Scarlet Heaven’, ‘Sonoma Velvet Ruby’, ‘Yellow Dream’, ‘Yellow Emperor’, ‘Yellow Heaven’, ‘Yellow Waterlily’. Late flowering group includes: ‘Border Charm’, ‘Garden Treasure’, ‘Kopper Kettle’, ‘Pastel Splendor’, ‘Prairie Charm’, ‘Viking Full Moon’, ‘White Emperor’, ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’; accumulation of effective temperatures above 500 °С is an essential requirement for their flowering. Conclusions. Itoh Group cultivars successfully pass all phases of seasonal development and manage to complete the growing season. Cultivars belong to the spring-summer-autumn-green phenorhythmotype. The onset of the corresponding phenological phases in peonies of the studied group of cultivars requires a certain sum of effective temperatures. Plant outgrowth begins on March 23 – April 2, when the sum of effective temperatures ranges from 20–40 °С. The flowering of varieties characterized as late spring, lasts 6–9 days ± 3–4 days, depending on the varietal characteristics and the year of cultivation. A rapid increase in the sum of effective temperatures up to 700 °C shortens the flowering phase by 4–5 days. An assortment of early (May 22–25 ± 2–3 days), medium (May 26–28 ± 3–5 days) and late-flowering (May 29–31 ± 4–6 days) cultivars has been selected, what ensures the continuity of peony flowering during two months. | Мета. Установити особливості сезонного ритму росту й розвитку сортів півоній Itoh Group в умовах Національного ботанічного саду імені М. М. Гришка НАН України (НБС). Методи. Об’єктом досліджень слугували рослини 24 сортів півоній Itoh Gp. Дослідження проводили на експериментальній ділянці відділу квітниково-декоративних рослин НБС протягом 2017–2020 рр. Суму ефективних температур обраховували через сумування добових температур повітря, зменшених на значення біологічного мінімуму. Результати. Виділено фенологічні фази росту й розвитку рослин півоній Іто-групи. Побудовано фенологічні спектри для різних феногруп. Установлено, що цвітіння ранніх сортів – ‘First Arrival’, ‘Hillary’, ‘Julia Rose’, ‘Morning Lilac’, ‘Old Rose Dandy’, ‘Sonoma Apricot’ – розпочинається за суми ефективних температур ≥ 400 °С. Сорти рослин середньої групи зацвітають, коли сума температур сягає 450 °С. До цієї групи належать ‘Bartzella’, ‘Callie’s Memory’, ‘Cora Louise’, ‘Lollipop’, ‘Scarlet Heaven’, ‘Sonoma Velvet Ruby’, ‘Yellow Dream’, ‘Yellow Emperor’, ‘Yellow Heaven’, ‘Yellow Waterlily’. Пізньоквітуюча група включає сорти ‘Border Charm’, ‘Garden Treasure’, ‘Kopper Kettle’, ‘Pastel Splendor’, ‘Prairie Charm’, ‘Viking Full Moon’, ‘White Emperor’, ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’, необхідною умовою цвітіння яких є накопичення ефективних температур понад 500 °С. Висновки. Рослини сортів півоній Itoh Gp успішно проходять усі фази сезонного розвитку та встигають завершити вегетацію. За тривалістю вегетації вони належать до весняно-літньо-осінньозеленого феноритмотипу. Настання відповідних фенологічних фаз у півоній досліджуваної групи сортів потребує певної суми ефективних температур. Відростання сортів розпочинається 23 березня – 2 квітня, коли сума ефективних температур змінюється в межах 20–40 °С. Цвітіння сортів характеризується як пізньовесняне, триває 9–16 діб ± 3–4 доби й залежить від сортових особливостей рослин та року вирощування. Швидке наростання суми ефективних температур до 700 °C під час цвітіння рослин скорочує його тривалість на 4–5 діб. Аналіз фенологічних спектрів сезонного розвитку рослин дав змогу виділити сортимент ранньо‑ (22–25 травня ± 2–3 доби), середньо‑ (26–28 травня ± 3–5 діб) та пізньоквітуючих (29–31 травня ± 4–6 діб) півоній Itoh Gp, що забезпечує безперервність їхнього цвітіння загалом упродовж двох місяців.

Conclusions. Itoh Group cultivars successfully pass all phases of seasonal development and manage to complete the growing season. Cultivars belong to the spring-summer-autumn-green phenorhythmotype. The onset of the corresponding phenological phases in peonies of the studied group of cultivars requires a certain sum of effective temperatures. Plant outgrowth begins on March 23 – April 2, when the sum of effective temperatures ranges from 20–40 °С. The flowering of varieties characterized as late spring, lasts 6–9 days ± 3–4 days, depending on the varietal characteristics and the year of cultivation. A rapid increase in the sum of effective temperatures up to 700 °C shortens the flowering phase by 4–5 days. An assortment of early (May 22–25 ± 2–3 days), medium (May 26–28 ± 3–5 days) and late-flowering (May 29–31 ± 4–6 days) cultivars has been selected, what ensures the continuity of peony flowering during two months.

Purpose. To reveal the peculiarities of the seasonal rhythm of growth and development of Itoh Group peony cultivars in the conditions of the M. M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Methods. The objects of research were plants of 24 cultivars of Itoh Group peonies. The research was conducted on the experimental field of the Department of Flowering and Ornamental Plants of the M. M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine during 2017–2020. The sum of effective temperatures was calculated by summing the daily air temperatures reduced by the biological zero.                 Results. The phenological phases of Ito Group cultivars growth were determined. Phenological spectra for different groups are presented. It was determined that the flowering of early cultivars: ‘First Arrival’, ‘Hillary’, ‘Julia Rose’, ‘Morning Lilac’, ‘Old Rose Dandy’, ‘Sonoma Apricot’ starts at the sum of effective temperatures ≥ 400 °С. The middle group hybrids bloom when the sum of temperatures reaches 450 °С. This group includes: ‘Bartzella’, ‘Callie’s Memory’, ‘Cora Louise’, ‘Lollipop’, ‘Scarlet Heaven’, ‘Sonoma Velvet Ruby’, ‘Yellow Dream’, ‘Yellow Emperor’, ‘Yellow Heaven’, ‘Yellow Waterlily’. Late flowering group includes: ‘Border Charm’, ‘Garden Treasure’, ‘Kopper Kettle’, ‘Pastel Splendor’, ‘Prairie Charm’, ‘Viking Full Moon’, ‘White Emperor’, ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’; accumulation of effective temperatures above 500 °С is an essential requirement for their flowering. The modern assortment of the genus Salvia is presented in quantitative, taxonomic, arealogical and ecological-cenotic terms. Belonging of the species of the genus to 6 main centers of origin of cultivated plants was determined, and a significant diversity of life forms (nanophanerophytes, microphanerophytes, hamephites, hemicryptophytes, theophytes), naturally formed under the influence of factors determined by different geographical and ecological-phytocenotic conditions of plant growth was reflected. Species assortment of the genus Salvia from the collection fund of the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was analyzed in comparison with the collections of other Ukrainian botanical gardens. The list of decorative species of the collection, found in the natural flora of Ukraine, was given. Three groups of species have been identified by origin, what determines the conditions for plant cultivation in the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. In terms of taxonomic structure, introduced sage species belong to eight (according to Bentham, 1833) out of twelve sections, which represent biomorphological diversity and confirm the high introduction potential of these plants.  The species and interspecific hybrids most fully used in breeding work and represented by a significant varietal diversity were distinguished, as well as the sage assortment of the collection of ornamental plants of the NBG was presented. Conclusions. It has been revealed that the species and varietal diversity of the genus Salvia of the world cultivated flora has a significant introduction potential for the Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine. It was determined that the main base for the introduction of the ornamental species of the genus Salvia in Ukraine is the collection of the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The main directions of further introduction and breeding work with representatives of the genus Salvia in the Forest-Steppe conditions of Ukraine were highlighted. | Мета. Проаналізовано видовий асортимент роду Salvia колекційного фонду Національного ботанічного саду імені М. М. Гришка НАН України (НБС) порівняно з колекціями інших ботанічних садів України. Наведено перелік декоративних видів колекції, що трап­ляються в природній флорі України. Виділено три групи видів за походженням, які й визначають умови культивування рослин у Лісостепу України. За таксономічною структурою інтродуковані види шавлій належать до восьми (згідно з Bentham, 1833) з дванадцяти секцій, які представляють біоморфологічне різноманіття та підтверджують високий інтродукційний потенціал цих рослин. Виділено види й міжвидові гібриди, які найбільш задіяні в селекційній роботі та репрезентовані значним сортовим розмаїттям, а також представлено сортимент шавлій колекції квітниково-декоративних рослин НБС. Висновки. Установлено, що видове та сортове різноманіття роду Salvia культивованої флори світу має значний інтродукційний потенціал для лісостепової зони України. Визначено, що основною базою для інтродукційного вивчення декоративних видів роду Sal­via в Україні є колекція Національного ботанічного са­ду імені М. М. Гришка НАН України. Виокремлено основні напрями щодо подальшої інтродукційної та се­лек­ційної роботи з представниками роду Salvia в умовах Лісостепу України.

Purpose of the research was to estimate the state of varietal resources and adaptive-and-productive potential of basil plants. Methods. Field, laboratory, statistical and calculation-analytical. The field work included marking out of the experimental plot and field work. The laboratory method was used to analyze plants, assess the quality of the crop, and study physical, chemical and microbiological properties of the soil. Statistical and analytical calculation methods were used to calculate the results. Results. The varieties of ‘Temnyi Opal’, ‘MFI-2’, ‘Siaivo’ and ‘Badioryi’ where the regression coefficient was in the range of 0.57–0.78 can be included to the group of highly plastic varieties by the “commodity yield” feature according to the results of research.  The highest rate of breeding value by the “plant weight” trait was observed in the variety of ‘Temnyi Opal’, Sc = 347.22. The group of highly plastic varieties on the basis of “plant weight” trait included the varieties ‘Mister Barns’, ‘MFI-2’, ‘Rutan’, ‘Siaivo’ and ‘Badioryi’, where the regression coefficient was in the range of 0.91–0.99. The varieties ‘Temnyi Opal’, ‘Yerevanskyi’, ‘Ametyst’ and ‘Lymonnyi Aromat’ were classified as intensive. The regression coefficient of these varieties was in the range of 1.03–1.16. The analysis of the combination of high productivity, quantitative characteristics of the crop structure with the level of ecological plasticity and stability indicates different ways of these indicators formation in separate varieties. It was revealed that a high level of plasticity and yield stability did not guarantee a similar result on some quantitative features of its structure. Conclusions. The degree of adaptability of basil varieties can also be assessed by the value of the parameters of features variation. The obtained results will allow more objectively assessing the adaptive-and-productive potential of varieties and qualitatively selecting initial forms for further breeding for adaptability. | Мета.
