Bioinvasions are a significant force of change – and economic and ecological threat – in marine ecosystems. The threat now encroaches on Alaska, which has had relatively few invasions compared to other global regions, prompting need to develop new incursion response tools. We appraised five ‘eco-friendly’ immersion treatment options (dilute acetic acid, dilute bleach, freshwater, brine and hypoxia) at either minute- or hour-scale exposures to kill the invasive tunicate Didemnum vexillum. Data revealed 100% treatment efficacy after two minutes in acetic acid, ten minutes in bleach, four hours in freshwater and over four hours in brine solution. We also demonstrated the importance of monitoring D. vexillum recovery for at least three weeks, since seemingly destroyed colonies rebounded during this timeframe. Combined, these findings provide insights towards a bay-scale eradication and post-border management plan applicable to the recent D. vexillum incursion in Whiting Harbor, Alaska and other shallow, inshore invasion sites.

The present study investigated nitrogen process in rhizosphere of Kandelia obovata under nitrogen input. Results showed that nitrogen additions significantly increased 4 kinds of enzyme activities (Urease, Nitrate reductase, Nitrite reductase and hydroxylamine reductase). The pH value increased to 7.1 under ammonium addition, but decreased to 6.9 under nitrate addition. Potential Nitrification Intensity (PNI) increased 200–1500% compared with control under ammonium addition, and Potential Denitrification Intensity (PDI) increased more than 200% under nitrate addition. Ten types of organic acids were detected from root exudates, which mainly included oxalic acid, tartaric acid, formic acid, acetic acid, and citric acid. The abundance of 5 kinds of microbial functional groups (nifH, AOA, AOB, nirS, nirK) responded differently. Total nitrogen in organs of K. obovata increased more than 200%. This indicated that nitrogen additions accelerated the transformation of nitrogen directly and stimulated the exudation of root exudates and 5 kinds of genes indirectly.

It was found that some of the medicinal plants accumulate increased amounts of toxic elements like Cd or Pb. Less is known about the accumulation of other hazardous elements like arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) in these species. The present paper investigated selected medicinal plants naturally growing on old mining sites in Slovakia, Central Europe, contaminated by As and Sb. Both these elements are nonessential for plants and, in higher level, might be phytotoxic. The soil concentration of As and Sb at three different localities extensively used for mining of Sb ores in former times highly exceed values characteristic for noncontaminated substrates and ranged between 146 and 540 mg kg⁻¹ for As and 525 and 4,463 mg kg⁻¹ for Sb. Extraction experiments of soils show differences between As and Sb leaching, as the highest amount of mobile As was released in acetic acid while Sb was predominantly released in distilled water. In total, seven different plant species were investigated (Fragaria vesca, Taraxacum officinale, Tussilago farfara, Plantago major, Veronica officinalis, Plantago media, and Primula elatior), and the concentration of investigated elements in shoot ranged between 1 and 519 mg kg⁻¹ for As and 10 and 920 mg kg⁻¹ for Sb. Differences in the bioaccumulation of As and Sb as well as in the translocation of these elements from root to shoot within the same species growing on different localities have been found. This indicate that efficiency of As and Sb uptake might vary between individual plants of the same species on different sites. Increased bioaccumulation of As and Sb in biomass of investigated plants might be dangerous for human when used for traditional medicinal purposes.

The photocatalytic degradation effectiveness of six selected typical phytotoxic substances (ferulic, benzoic, gallic, salicylic, tannic, and acetic acid) by two levels of 10 nm TiO₂ (11 and 22 g/m²) immobilized on tiles under 254 nm of UV light irradiation was investigated. The results showed that the immobilized nano-TiO₂ significantly degraded all phytotoxic substances dissolved in distilled water, and the cumulative degradation rates of ferulic, benzoic, gallic, salicylic, tannic, and acetic acid reached 22.2, 33.6, 48.2, 56.9, 57.5, and 76.0 % after 6 h of treatment, respectively. Furthermore, the cumulative degradation rates of six phytotoxic substances by immobilized nano-TiO₂ were different remarkably, i.e., salicylic acid > benzoic acid, gallic acid > ferulic acid, acetic acid > tannic acid. The maximal photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of all phytotoxic substances appeared at the first 2 h in the three experiments. During the 6-h treatment period, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of all phytotoxic substances decreased gradually. There was no significant difference in the photocatalytic degradation of benzoic acid and ferulic acid between the two levels of immobilized nano-TiO₂ treatments, whereas a significant difference was found in the photocatalytic degradation of salicylic acid, gallic acid, tannic acid, and acetic acid. In a word, nano-TiO₂ photocatalysis is an effective method to degrade phytotoxic substances. And the photocatalytic degradation effectiveness of six typical phytotoxic substances may be related to their structures.

Red mud (RM) is a strongly alkaline residue generated in enormous amounts worldwide from bauxite refining using the Bayer chemical process. RM is composed mainly of Fe, Ti and Al oxides and hydroxides, but it also contains an array of trace metals and metalloids at different concentrations. The purpose of this paper is to assess the potential mobility of metals in RM, with special emphasis on pH effect. The 'operational' distribution and leachability of metals within/from RM was studied by applying a sequential extraction procedure (SEP) and several leaching tests (rapid titration, equilibration acidification, batch leaching with acetic acid and also the toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) and the DIN 38414-S4 procedures, used as reference methods) carried out at different pH, solid/liquid ratio, extraction period and type of acid (HCl or acetic acid). Chemical analysis showed that, in addition to the major metals Fe, Al and Ti, RM contains several trace metals, some of them (Cr, Cu and Ni) in concentrations exceeding the regulatory limits. SEP showed that a majority of the metals in the RM (between the 32.2 ± 8.5 for Cd and 95.3 ± 0.4 % for Ni) were found in the residual fraction, suggesting that they are not readily mobile under normal environmental conditions. Leaching tests performed at different pH showed that a significant fraction of the metals is mobilised from RM only under very strong acid conditions (pH < 2), whereas Al is released in considerable amounts at pH < 5.3. Among the trace metals, Cr requires special attention because of its relative high concentration in RM and the higher concentrations of this metal mobilised at low pH. The leaching tests using acetic acid showed that the standard TCLP largely underestimates the release of trace metals from RM, and therefore it is not advisable to evaluate the actual potential leaching of trace metals from this residue.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of replacement of phosphoric acid with nitric or acetic acid, and replacement of NaOH with KOH, as cleaning agents in dairy factories, on the effects that irrigation of dairy factory effluent (DFE) has on the soil–plant system. A 16-week greenhouse study was carried out in which the effects of addition of synthetic dairy factory effluent containing (a) milk residues alone or milk residues plus (b) H₃PO₄/NaOH, (c) H₃PO₄/HNO₃/NaOH or (d) CH₃COOH/KOH, on soil’s chemical, physical and microbial properties and perennial ryegrass growth and nutrient uptake were investigated. The cumulative effect of DFE addition was to increase exchangeable Na, K, Ca, Mg, exchangeable sodium percentage, microbial biomass C and N and basal respiration in the soil. Dry matter yields of ryegrass were increased by additions of DFE other than that containing CH₃COOH. Plant uptake of P, Ca and Mg was in the same order as their inputs in DFE but for Na; inputs were an order of magnitude greater than plant uptake. Replacement of NaOH by KOH resulted in increased accumulation of exchangeable K. The effects of added NaOH and KOH on promoting breakdown of soil aggregates during wet sieving (and formation of a < 0.25 mm size class) were similar. Replacement of H₂PO₄ by HNO₃ is a viable but CH₃COOH appears to have detrimental effects on plant growth. Replacement of NaOH by KOH lowers the likelihood of phytotoxic effects of Na, but K and Na have similar effects on disaggregation.

This study evaluates the influence of a heavily urbanized area (Paris Metropolitan area), on receiving water contamination by both bisphenol A (BPA) and alkylphenol ethoxylate (APE) biodegradation product. The study began by investigating concentrations within urban sources. In addition to the more commonly studied wastewater treatment plant effluent, wet weather urban sources (including combined sewer overflows, urban runoff, and total atmospheric fallout) were considered. The initial results highlight a significant contamination of all urban sources (from a few nanograms per liter in atmospheric fallout to several micrograms per liter in the other sources) with clearly distinguishable distribution patterns. Secondly, concentration changes along the Seine River from upstream of the Paris Metropolitan area to downstream were investigated. While the concentrations of BPA and nonylphenoxy acetic acid (NP₁EC) increase substantially due to urban sources, the 4-nonylphenol concentrations remain homogeneous along the Seine. These results suggest a broad dissemination of 4-nonylphenol at the scale of the Seine River basin. Moreover, the relationship between pollutant concentrations and Seine River flow was assessed both upstream and downstream of the Paris conurbation. Consequently, a sharp decrease in dissolved NP₁EC concentrations relative to Seine River flow underscores the influence of single-point urban pollution on Seine River contamination. Conversely, dissolved 4-nonylphenol concentrations serve to reinforce the hypothesis of its widespread presence at the Seine River basin scale.
