In recent years, with the expansion of the Weining county in the northeast of Caohai wetland, the construction of a new port in the north, and the large-scale development of cultivated land in the east, land use patterns in lakeshore areas have changed. These changes have affected the state of lake shores water bodies in complex ways, resulting in varying degrees of local water pollution. To explore the distribution and transformation characteristics of water chemistry and heavy metals in different areas of a water body under the influence of different land uses, especially the interactions between water chemical factors and heavy metals in different areas of a water body, this study used Circos diagrams, originally used in biological genetic analysis, to visualize these interactions. This is the first time that the Circos diagram has been applied to the analysis of environmental interactions. The results showed that there are significant differences in the distribution of water chemical factors and heavy metals in different areas of the Caohai wetland. In particular, Cd is affected by anthropogenic sources. The Cd content is higher in the NCL and UL areas, which are at greater risk from pollution. The factors controlling heavy metal levels in water bodies were different in the different regions. The NCL region was mainly affected by construction excavation ore, UL was mainly affected by man-made industrial inputs, CL was mainly affected by pesticide and fertilizer inputs, and ML and FL were mainly affected by Eh and DO. The PCA results showed that the sources of heavy metals in different types of water bodies in the lakeshore zone were both natural and anthropogenic. Therefore, controlling pollutants, reducing environmental pollution inputs to the lakeshore zone, and strengthening supervision and management near wetlands may be of great significance for handling heavy metal pollution.

Heavy metal accumulation in agricultural land causes crop production losses worldwide. Metal homeostasis within cells is tightly regulated. However, homeostasis breakdown leads to accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Overall plant fitness under stressful environment is determined by coordination between roots and shoots. But little is known about organ specific responses to heavy metals, whether it depends on the metal category (redox or non-redox reactive) and if these responses are associated with heavy metal accumulation in each organ or there are driven by other signals. Maize seedlings were subjected to sub-lethal concentrations of four metals (Zn, Ni, Cd and Cu) individually, and were quantified for growth, ABA level, and redox alterations in roots, mature leaves (L1,2) and young leaves (L3,4) at 14 and 21 days after sowing (DAS). The treatments caused significant increase in endogenous metal levels in all organs but to different degrees, where roots showed the highest levels. Biomass was significantly reduced under heavy metal stress. Although old leaves accumulated less heavy metal content than root, the reduction in their biomass (FW) was more pronounced. Metal exposure triggered ABA accumulation and stomatal closure mainly in older leaves, which consequently reduced photosynthesis. Heavy metals induced oxidative stress in the maize organs, but to different degrees. Tocopherols, polyphenols and flavonoids increased specifically in the shoot under Zn, Ni and Cu, while under Cd treatment they played a minor role. Under Cu and Cd stress, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) activities were induced in the roots, however ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity was only increased in the older leaves. Overall, it can be concluded that root and shoot organs specific responses to heavy metal toxicity are not only associated with heavy metal accumulation and they are specialized at the level of antioxidants to cope with.

Zeolite-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (Z-NZVI) has great potential for metal(loid) removal, but its encapsulation mechanisms and ecological risks in real soil systems are not completely clear. We conducted long-term incubation experiments to gain new insights into the interactions between metal(loid)s (Cd, Pb, As) and Z-NZVI in naturally contaminated farmland soils, as well as the alteration of indigenous bacterial communities during soil remediation. With the pH-adjusting and adsorption capacities, 30 g kg⁻¹ Z-NZVI amendment significantly decreased the available metal(loid) concentrations by 10.2–96.8% and transformed them into strongly-bound fractions in acidic and alkaline soils after 180 d. An innovative magnetic separation of Z-NZVI from soils followed by XRD and XPS characterizations revealed that B-type ternary complexation, heterogeneous coprecipitation, and/or concurrent redox reactions of metal(loid)s, especially the formation of Cd₃(AsO₄)₂, PbFe₂(AsO₄)₂(OH)₂, and As⁰, occurred only under specific soil conditions. Sequencing of 16S rDNA using Illumina MiSeq platform indicated that temporary shifts in iron-resistant/sensitive, pH-sensitive, denitrifying, and metal-resistant bacteria after Z-NZVI addition were ultimately eliminated because soil characteristics drove the re-establishment of indigenous bacterial community. Meanwhile, Z-NZVI recovered the basic activities of bacterial DNA replication and denitrification functions in soils. These results confirm that Z-NZVI is promising for the long-term remediation of metal(loid)s contaminated farmland soil without significant ecotoxicity.

Microplastic pollution has become an emergency issue in the global environment. However, little is known about the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in agroecological system. In this study, we investigated the pollution of microplastics in vegetable farmlands in suburb of Wuhan, central China. Results showed that the abundance of microplastics ranged from 320 to 12,560 items/kgdw. Microplastic pollution adjacent to the suburban roads was about 1.8 times as serious as that in the residential areas. Microplastics with size less than 0.2 mm were dominated, reaching 70% in total. The main types of microplastics were fibers and microbeads. Moreover, polyamide (32.5%) and polypropylene (28.8%) were the main types of polymer. This study proclaims the occurrence and characteristics of microplastic pollution in typical farmland soils of suburb land. It may provide significant basis for subsequent research about microplastics contaminant in the terrestrial ecosystem.

The application of surfactants is an effective way to inhibit the migration of organic contaminants (OCs) from soil to plants, and thus would be a great candidate method for producing safe agricultural products in organic-contaminated farmland. In this study, it was found that cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTMAB) reduced the OCs in cabbage by 22.0–64.1%, and those in lettuce by 18.8–36.5%. We developed a mathematical model to predict the accumulation of OCs in plants in the presence of surfactants. The successive partitioning of OCs among three phases, namely, soil, soil water and plant roots, was considered. The equilibrium of OC between the soil and soil water was scaled using the sorption coefficient of OCs on soils normalized by the soil organic carbon (Kₒc) and carbon-normalized OCs sorption coefficient with the sorbed surfactants (Kₛₛ). To precisely calculate the Kₒc and Kₛₛ, the bioavailable and bound OCs were measured using a sequential extraction method. Linear positive correlations between the logarithm of Kₒc (or Kₛₛ) and the logarithm of the octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kₒw) of OCs were established for laterite soils, paddy soils and black soils. In the presence of CTMAB, the equilibrium of OCs between the soil water and plant roots was scaled using the carbon-normalized OC sorption coefficient with the sorbed surfactants (Kₛf), whose logarithmic value was linearly correlated with the log Kₒw of the OCs. A three-phase-successive partition-limited model was developed based on these relationships, demonstrating an average prediction accuracy of 76.6 ± 36.8%. Our results indicated that the decrease in bioavailable OCs in soils and the increase in sorption of OCs on roots should be taken into consideration when predicting plant uptake. This research provides a validated mathematical model for predicting the concentration of OCs in plants in the presence of surfactants.

Plastic, and especially microplastic, contamination of soils has become a novel research field. After the detection of microplastics in soils, spatial distribution and dynamics are still unknown. However, the potential risks associated with plastic particles in soils cannot be sufficiently assessed without knowledge about the spatial distribution of these anthropogenic materials. Based on a spatial research approach, including soil surveys, this study quantified the mesoplastic (MEP, > 5.0 mm) and coarse microplastics (CMP, 2.0–5.0 mm) content of twelve floodplain soils. At four transects in the catchment area of the Lahn river (Germany), soils down to a depth of 2 m were examined for plastic content for the first time. MEP and CMP were detected through visual examination after sample preprocessing and ATR-FTIR analyses. Average MEP and CMP concentrations range between 2.06 kg⁻¹ (±1.55 kg⁻¹) and 1.88 kg⁻¹ (±1.49 kg⁻¹) with maximal values of 5.37 MEP kg⁻¹ to 8.59 CMP kg⁻¹. Plastic particles are heterogeneously distributed in samples. Both plastic size classes occur more frequently in topsoils than in soil layers deeper than 30 cm. The maximal depth of CMP occurrence lies between 75 and 100 cm. Most common CMP polymer type was PE-LD, followed by PP and PA. MEP and CMP particles occur frequently at near channel sides and more often on riparian strips or grassland than on farmland. Vertical distribution of CMP indicates anthropogenic relocation in topsoils and additional deep displacement through natural processes like preferential flow paths or bioturbation. By comparing sedimentation rates of the river with the maximum age of plastic particles, sedimentation as a deposition process of plastic in floodplains becomes probable. From our findings, it can be concluded that an overall widespread but spatial heterogenous contamination occurs in floodplain soils. Additionally, a complex plastic source pattern seems to appear in floodplain areas.

Planting leafy vegetables, especially pakchoi, in cadmium (Cd) polluted farmland is easy to lead to excessive Cd content in edible parts, which results in high risk of food chain. In this study, a field experiment was carried out to study the effects of intercropping of pakchoi with Cd hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance, and the roles of endophytic bacterium SaMR12 was also investigated. When intercropping with Sedum, the growth of pakchoi was not affected but their Cd concentration and accumulation were significantly increased, while which were obviously decreased by SaMR12 inoculation. After intercropping, the biomass of Sedum was significantly reduced, but their Cd concentration increased. SaMR12 inoculation significantly increased Cd accumulation of Sedum, and which increased to 3 times in Sedum monoculture. Those results showed that although intercropping with hyperaccumulator could lead to higher risk of pakchoi in Cd polluted field, intercropping with SaMR12 inoculated Sedum can decrease Cd concentration of pakchoi and promote Cd absorption of Sedum, which indicated that this endophyte can be made into a microbial inoculum as a soil additive for the safe production of vegetables and the soil Cd pollution remediation.

We investigated the levels and distribution patterns of α- and β-endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate in air, soil, water, and sediment samples collected from the South Korean persistent organic pollutants (POPs) monitoring networks. In the air samples, the highest concentrations of the total (Σ₃) endosulfan (50.3–611 pg/m³, mean: 274 pg/m³) were observed during summer. Spearman analysis revealed a good correlation between agricultural land area and atmospheric concentrations of Σ₃ endosulfan except during winter. Regardless of the season, the ratio of the two isomers (α/β) was 3.6–4.9 in the air samples, higher than that observed in technical mixtures (2.0–2.3), possibly due to the higher volatility of α-endosulfan, compared to β-endosulfan. Concentrations of Σ₃ endosulfan in the soil samples (n.d.−13.4 ng/g, mean: 0.8 ng/g) were not significantly different except at some stations adjacent to large areas of farmland. The average levels of Σ₃ endosulfan in the water and sediment samples were 2.1 ng/L and 0.1 ng/g dw, respectively. In analyzing the four largest rivers, it was observed that a few water stations during spring and fall and sediment stations in fall had high concentrations of the two isomers and endosulfan sulfate, particularly around the Yeoungsan and Nakdong Rivers near large areas of agricultural land. Endosulfan sulfate was dominant at most water and sediment sampling stations. This study demonstrates that the endosulfan found in most environmental compartments most probably derives from agricultural areas despite its ban as a pesticide. On the other hand, given that it was also detected in industrial and urban areas, in which pesticide application does not occur, it can be conjectured that endosulfan is aerially transported at higher temperatures and continuously circulates within the environment.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in soils has become a serious and widespread environmental problem, especially in areas with high natural background Cd values, but the mechanism of Cd enrichment in these areas is still unclear. This study uses the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (Guangxi), a typical area with a high background Cd level and Cd pollution related to mining activities, as an example to explore the source and predict areas with high Cd risk in soils based on the geographical detector method. The areas with high Cd in Guangxi soils were classified into non-mining areas and mining areas according to their potential Cd sources. The results show that the rich Cd content in the soils from the non-mining area of Guangxi was mainly derived from the soil type (q = 0.34), geological age (q = 0.27), rock type (q = 0.26) and geomorphic type (q = 0.20). Specifically, the Cd content was derived from the weathering and deposition processes of carbonatite from the Carboniferous system in the karst area. The high Cd content in the soils of the mining area of Guangxi was mainly derived from the area mined for mineral resources (q = 0.08) and rock type (q = 0.05). Specifically, the Cd content was derived from the mining of lead-zinc ores. The areas in Guangxi with a high risk of Cd soil pollution are mostly concentrated in karst areas, such as Hechi, Laibin, Chongzuo, southern Liuzhou and Baise, northern Nanning city and northeastern Guilin city, and some mining areas. These results indicated that the high Cd concentration in the soils of large areas of Guangxi is probably due to natural sources, while the high Cd concentration around mining areas is due to anthropogenic sources. The results will be useful for soil restoration and locating and controlling contaminated agricultural land.

Atrazine has been used on Chinese farmlands for a long time and over a wide range. The concentration of atrazine (1.86–1100 mg kg⁻¹) has exceeded the allowable limit in the soil (1.0 mg kg⁻¹), and concern is increasing about the potential harm to farmland soil. Four treatments (AT₀, AT₆, AT₁₀, AT₁₆) were established to reveal the effects of the long-term application of atrazine on soil health. The results showed a nonlinear regulation of the atrazine residue concentrations in the four treatments. The highest concentration of atrazine residue was in AT₆, at 167 mg kg⁻¹, and the lowest concentration of atrazine residue was in AT₁₆, at 102 mg kg⁻¹, but there was no significant difference between AT₁₀ and AT₁₆. The soil urease activity decreased significantly with the increase in the years of atrazine application, the saccharase and cellulase activities in the AT₆ were significantly higher than those observed in the other three treatments, the catalase activity gradually decreased with the increase in atrazine application years, and the activity in AT₆ was significantly higher than that in AT₁₆. A total of 238 genera were identified by Illumina MiSeq sequencing, and 28 dominant genera were screened. Atrazine significantly increased the relative abundance of Actinobacteria and contributed to the relative abundance of Rubrobacter, Blastococcus, Promicromonospora, Jiangella, Psychroglaciecola and Acetobacteraceae_uncultured, which exhibited significantly higher abundance in AT₁₆ than in AT₀. Although there were atrazine-degrading bacteria in the soil, and the atrazine residue decreased with the increase in application years, the concentration of the atrazine residue was still nearly 100 times higher than the allowable limit in the soil, which is a great threat to the soil health.
