The rapid urbanisation of many cities in south and south-east Asia has increased the demand for bricks, which are typically supplied from brick kilns in peri-urban areas. We report visible foliar damage to mango, apricot and plum trees in the vicinity of traditional Bull’s Trench brick kilns in Peshawar, Pakistan. Visible injury symptoms, hydrogen fluoride concentrations in air, and foliar fluoride concentrations were all greater in the vicinity of brick kilns than at more distant sites, indicating that fluoride emissions from brick kilns were the main cause of damage. Interviews with local farmers established the significant impact of this damage on their livelihoods. Since poorly regulated brick kilns are often found close to important peri-urban agricultural areas, we suggest that this may be a growing but unrecognised environmental problem in regions of Asia where emission control in brick kilns has not been improved.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of apricot shell-derived biochar (ASB) and apple tree-derived biochar (ATB) on soil properties, plant growth, microbial communities, enzymatic activities, and Zn and Cd fractionation and phytoavailability in mining soils. Smelter soil contaminated by Zn (1860.0 mg kg⁻¹) and Cd (39.9 mg kg⁻¹) was collected from Fengxian, China, treated with different doses (0 (control), 1, 2.5, 5, and 10% w/w) of both biochars and cultivated by Brassica juncea in a greenhouse pot experiment. The acid-soluble, reducible, oxidizable, and residual fraction and plant tissue concentrations of Zn and Cd were determined. Biochar addition improved plant growth (22.6–29.4%), soil pH (up to 0.94 units), and soil organic matter (up to 4-fold) compared to the control. The ASB and ATB, particularly ATB, reduced the acid-soluble (21–26% for Zn and 15–35% for Cd) and the reducible (9–36% for Zn and 11–19% for Cd) fractions of Zn and Cd and altered these fractions in the organic and residual fractions. Therefore, the biochars decreased the metal concentrations in the roots (36–41% for Zn and 33–37% for Cd) and shoots (25–31% for Zn and 20–29% for Cd), which might be due to the increase in pH, biochar liming effects, and metal sorption by the biochar. The biochars impact on the bacterial community composition was selective. The ASB and ATB decreased the activities of soil β-glucosidase, dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase while increasing the urease activity. The biochars, particularly ATB, can be considered as effective soil amendments for reducing the phytotoxicity of Zn and Cd in contaminated soils, improving plant growth, enhancing the abundance of specific bacterial groups and increasing urease activity; however, more attention should be paid to their negative effects on the activities of β-glucosidase, dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase.

Aerosols on plant leaves make it possible to assess the quality of air in settlements. The purpose of this work was to assess the acidity and specific electrical conductivity of aerosol suspensions (by washing off aerosol particles from the leaves of apricot trees (Prunus armeniaca)), which characterize the air pollution in the residential area of the Svetly Yar settlement (Volgograd region, Russia) during the spring-summer of 2019. The research hypothesis was as follows: Acidic mineralized aerosols with a mixed source are present in Svetly Yar. The differences were checked by the Student’s t-test and evaluated at the level of significance of p = 0.05. The results indicated the presence of acidic (pH = 4.56 + 0.02) and highly mineralized aerosols (EC = 130.41 + 0.17 μS/cm) in the ambient air of the Svetly Yar residential area during the spring-summer of 2019 and revealed environmental risks for the population in comparison with aerosol suspensions from a (relatively) clean location (pH = 6.46 + 0.02; EC = 37.61 + 0.19 μS/cm). The authors confirmed their hypothesis in favor of mixed source acidic mineralized aerosols in the residential area of the Svetly Yar village. The anthropogenic sources were the industrial zones of Svetly Yar, the southern part of the city of Volgograd and artificial sedimentation tanks in the southwestern part of Svetly Yar. A natural source of pollution in the vicinity of Svetly Yar may be hidden geologically active structures: faults in the Earth’s crust, a salt diapir, an underground ancient semiactive volcanic zone on a steppe, etc.

2014
Milošević, Tomo | Đurić, Milena | Milošević, Nebojša
The main objective of the present study is to measure the levels of heavy metals in important fruit species such as apple, apricot, and nectarine and their nine, five, and six cultivars, respectively. This work investigates the accumulation of Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, Pb, and Cr in flowers of above species, to measure the levels of heavy metal contamination. The obtained results revealed that amounts of heavy metals significantly varied among cultivars at the same species and were within the permissible amounts in general. The Cd was not detected in apricot, nectarine, and the most of apple cultivars. Results for floral Fe, and also for Cu and Zn, which are the most important micronutrients for fruit production, suggest that levels of these elements might be used for assessing the storage of these elements during the previous season. We assume that the production of apple, apricot, and nectarine is safe, and there is no risk of contamination with heavy metals.

In this study, arsenate removal by apricot stone-based activated carbon (IAC) modified with iron (oxy-hydr)oxides was carried out. For this purpose, hybrid adsorbents based on Fe²⁺-loaded activated carbon (IAC–Fe(II)) and Fe³⁺-loaded activated carbon (IAC–Fe(III)) were synthesized by precipitation method. A three-level, three-factor Box–Behnken experimental design combined with response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to find the optimum combination of process parameters for maximizing the As(V) adsorption capacity of activated carbon-based iron-containing hybrid adsorbent. Three important operation parameters, namely, initial pH of solution (3.0–7.0), temperature (25–65 °C), and initial As(V) concentration (0.5–8.5 mg L⁻¹), were chosen as the independent variables, while the As(V) adsorption capacities of hybrid adsorbents were designated as dependent variables. Lack of fit test showed that the quadratic model provided the best fit to experimental data for both adsorbents with the highest coefficients of determination (R ²), adjusted R ², and p-values for lack of fit. The standardized effects of the independent variables and their interactions were tested by analysis of variance and Pareto chart. The model F-values (F IAC–Fₑ₍II₎=330.39 and F IAC–Fₑ₍III₎=36.19) and R ² values (R ² IAC–Fₑ₍II₎=0.9977 and R ² IAC–Fₑ₍III₎=0.9789) of second-order polynomial regression equations indicated the significance of the regression models. Optimum process conditions for As(V) adsorption onto IAC–Fe(II) were 63.68 °C, pH 3.10, and 8.4 mg L⁻¹ initial arsenic concentration, while 25.22 °C, pH 3.07, and 8.28 mg L⁻¹ initial As(V) concentration were found to be optimum conditions for IAC–Fe(III).

Vitamin B17 (VB17), also known as amygdalin and laetrile, is a type of carbohydrate occurring naturally in many plants, such as apricot kernels which have obtained a great interest in cancer therapy. This study aimed to investigate the hepatic protective potential of VB17 against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC)–bearing mice-induced liver injury, DNA damage, apoptotic P53, and PCNA alterations. A total of 100 female mice were divided into 5 groups (1st group, control group; 2nd group, VB17 group; 3rd group, EAC group; 4th group, pre-treated EAC with VB17; 5th group, co-treated EAC with VB17). Results showed that the presence of VB17 in pre-treated and co-treated groups lead to decreased DNA damage, microsomal protein, NADPH cytochrome c reductase, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), AST, ALT, and ALP while showed increased cytochrome b5, cytochrome P450 amidopyrine N-demethylase, and aniline 4-hydroxylase compared with the EAC group. Many histopathological changes were observed in liver sections in EAC as moderate fibrosis and marked diffuse necrosis of hepatic tissue, marked inflammatory cells, and congested blood sinusoids. On the other hand, there was a moderate degree of improvement in hepatocytes in liver sections in pre-treated VB17+EAC, while a mild degree of improvement in hepatocytes, moderate cellular infiltrations, and moderate cytoplasmic vacuolization of hepatocytes in liver sections in co-treated EAC+VB17. In addition, there was a depletion in hepatic P53 and PCNA protein expression compared with the EAC group. It could be concluded that VB17 has a potential hepatoprotective effect against EAC cell–induced liver toxicity.
