The extensive use of melamine and its three derivatives (i.e., ammeline, ammelide, and cyanuric acid) resulted in their widespread occurrence in the environment. Nevertheless, limited information is available on their distribution in the aquatic environment. In this study, concentrations and profiles of melamine and its derivatives were determined in 223 water samples, comprising river water, lake water, seawater, tap water, bottled water, rain water, wastewater, and swimming pool water, collected from New York State, USA. The sum concentrations of melamine and its derivatives (∑₄MELs) decreased in the following order: swimming pool water (median: 1.5 × 10⁷ ng/L) ≫ wastewater (1240) > precipitation (739) > tap water (512) > river water (370) > lake water (347) > seawater (186) > bottled water (98). Cyanuric acid was the major compound, accounting for 60–100% of ∑₄MELs concentrations in swimming pool water, wastewater, precipitation, tap water, seawater, and bottled water, whereas melamine dominated in river and lake water (54–64% of ∑₄MELs). Significant positive correlations (0.499 < R < 0.703, p < 0.002) were found between the concentrations of melamine and atrazine (a triazine herbicide) in surface waters. The geographic distribution in the concentrations of ∑₄MELs in river, lake, and tap water corresponded with the degree of urbanization, suggesting that human activities contribute to the sources melamine and cyanuric acid in the aquatic environments. A preliminary hazard assessment of melamine and cyanuric acid in waters suggested that their ecological or human health risks were minimal. This is the first study to document the occurrence and spatial distribution of melamine and its derivatives in waters from the United States.

Organisms and ecosystems are generally exposed to mixtures of chemicals rather than to individual chemicals, but there have been relatively few detailed analyses of the mixtures of pesticides that occur in surface waters. This study examined over 2600 water samples, analysed for between 21 and 47 pesticides, from 15 waterways that discharge to the lagoon of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2015. Essentially all the samples (99.8%) contained detectable concentrations (>limit of detection) of pesticides and pesticide mixtures. Approximately, 10% of the samples contained no quantifiable (>limit of reporting) pesticides, 10% contained one quantifiable pesticide and 80% contained quantifiable mixtures of 2–20 pesticides. Approximately 82% of samples that contained quantifiable mixtures had more than two modes of action (MoAs), but only approximately 6% had five or more MoAs. The mode, average and median number of quantifiable pesticides in all the samples were 2, 5.1 and 4, respectively. The most commonly detected compounds both individually and in mixtures were the pesticides atrazine, diuron, imidacloprid, hexazinone, 2,4-D, and the degradation product desethylatrazine. The number of pesticides and modes of action of pesticides in mixtures differed spatially and were affected by land use. Waterways draining catchments where sugar cane was a major land use had mixtures with the most pesticides.

Atrazine has been used on Chinese farmlands for a long time and over a wide range. The concentration of atrazine (1.86–1100 mg kg⁻¹) has exceeded the allowable limit in the soil (1.0 mg kg⁻¹), and concern is increasing about the potential harm to farmland soil. Four treatments (AT₀, AT₆, AT₁₀, AT₁₆) were established to reveal the effects of the long-term application of atrazine on soil health. The results showed a nonlinear regulation of the atrazine residue concentrations in the four treatments. The highest concentration of atrazine residue was in AT₆, at 167 mg kg⁻¹, and the lowest concentration of atrazine residue was in AT₁₆, at 102 mg kg⁻¹, but there was no significant difference between AT₁₀ and AT₁₆. The soil urease activity decreased significantly with the increase in the years of atrazine application, the saccharase and cellulase activities in the AT₆ were significantly higher than those observed in the other three treatments, the catalase activity gradually decreased with the increase in atrazine application years, and the activity in AT₆ was significantly higher than that in AT₁₆. A total of 238 genera were identified by Illumina MiSeq sequencing, and 28 dominant genera were screened. Atrazine significantly increased the relative abundance of Actinobacteria and contributed to the relative abundance of Rubrobacter, Blastococcus, Promicromonospora, Jiangella, Psychroglaciecola and Acetobacteraceae_uncultured, which exhibited significantly higher abundance in AT₁₆ than in AT₀. Although there were atrazine-degrading bacteria in the soil, and the atrazine residue decreased with the increase in application years, the concentration of the atrazine residue was still nearly 100 times higher than the allowable limit in the soil, which is a great threat to the soil health.

Compound-specific stable isotope analysis of micropollutants has become an established method for the qualitative and quantitative assessment of biodegradation in the field. However, many of environmental factors may have an influence on the observed isotope fractionation. Herein, we investigate the impact of substrate concentration on the observed enrichment factor derived from Rayleigh plot of batch laboratory experiments conducted to measure the atrazine carbon isotope fractionation of Rhizobium sp. CX-Z subjected to the different initial concentration level of atrazine. The Rayleigh plot (changes in bulk concentration vs. isotopic composition) derived from batch experiments shown divergence from the linear relation towards the end of degradation, confirming bioavailability of atrazine changed along with the decay of substrate concentration, consequently, influenced the isotope fractionation and lowered the observed enrichment factor. When microbial degradation is coupled to a mass transfer step limiting the bioavailability of substrate, the observed enrichment factor displays a dependence on initial atrazine concentration. Observed enrichment factors (ε) (absolute value) derived from the low concentration (i.e. 9.5 μM) are below 3.5‰ to the value of −5.4‰ determined at high bioavailability (membrane-free cells). The observed enrichment factor depended significantly on the atrazine concentration, indicating the concentration level and the bioavailability of a substrate in realistic environments should be considered during the assessment of microbial degradation or in situ bioremediation based on compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) method.

Climate change will impact soil properties such as soil moisture, organic carbon and temperature and changes in these properties will influence the sorption, biodegradation and leaching of trace organic contaminants to groundwater. In this study, we conducted a modeling case study to evaluate atrazine and estrone transport in the subsurface under current and future climate conditions at a field site in central Nebraska. According to the modeling results, in the future, enhanced evapotranspiration and increased average air temperature may cause drier soil conditions, which consequently reduces the biodegradation of atrazine and estrone in the water phase. On the other hand, greater transpiration rates lead to greater root solute uptake which may decrease the concentration of atrazine and estrone in the soil profile. Another consequence of future climate is that the infiltration and leaching rates for both atrazine and estrone may be lower under future climate scenarios. Reduced infiltration of trace organic compounds may indicate that lower trace organic concentrations in groundwater may occur under future climate scenarios.

In this study, a weather-based multicomponent model was developed based on the unique biostructures and metabolic processes of mushrooms to evaluate their uptake of pesticides from soils, and the effects of temperature and relative humidity on the bioaccumulation of pesticides in mushrooms was comprehensively quantified. Additionally, a new pseudo-partition coefficient between mushrooms and soils was introduced to assess the impacts of different physiochemical properties on the pesticide uptake process. The results indicate that, in general, the pseudo-partition coefficient increases as the relative humidity increases for both the air and soil according to Fick’s law of gas diffusion and the spatial competition of molecules, respectively. Meanwhile, the effect of temperature on the pesticide bioaccumulation process is more complex. For most pesticides (e.g., atrazine), the pseudo-partition coefficient that was computed from the transpiration component had a maximum value at a specific temperature due to the temperature dependency of the transpiration and biodegradation processes. For some pesticides (e.g., ethoprophos), the pseudo-partition coefficient of the air-deposition component had a maximum value at a certain temperature that was caused by the ratio of the soil–air internal transfer energy and degradation activation energy of the pesticide. It was also concluded that for relatively low-volatility pesticides, transpiration dominated the bioaccumulation process; this was mainly determined from the pesticide water solubility. For nonbiodegradable pesticides (e.g., lindane), the computed coefficient values were relatively low due to their insolubility in water, which inhibits bioaccumulation in mushrooms and is one of the main reasons for their long-term persistence in soils.

Despite intensive ecotoxicological research, we still know relatively little about the ecological impacts of many environmental contaminants. Filling these knowledge gaps is particularly important regarding amphibians, because they play significant roles in freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, and their populations are declining worldwide. In this study, we investigated two pollutants that have been poorly studied in ecotoxicology despite their widespread occurrence in surface waters: the herbicide terbuthylazine and the pharmaceutical drug carbamazepine. We exposed two anuran species throughout their larval development to each of two environmentally relevant concentrations of each pollutant, and recorded mortality and 17 sub-lethal endpoints up to several months after exposure. Mortality was low and unrelated to treatment. In agile frogs (Rana dalmatina), we found that treatment with 0.3 μg/L terbuthylazine decreased tadpole activity and reduced fat bodies in juveniles, whereas treatment with 50 μg/L carbamazepine decreased spleen size and increased spleen pigmentation. In common toads (Bufo bufo), treatment with 0.003 μg/L terbuthylazine increased body mass at metamorphosis, treatment with 0.3 μg/L terbuthylazine increased the size of optic tecta, and treatment with 0.5 μg/L carbamazepine decreased hypothalamus size. Treatment with 50 μg/L carbamazepine reduced the feeding activity of toad tadpoles, decreased their production of anti-predatory bufadienolide toxins, and increased their body mass at metamorphosis; juvenile toads in this treatment group had reduced spleen pigmentation. Neither treatments affected the time to metamorphosis, post-metamorphic body mass, or sex ratios significantly. These results show that environmental levels of both terbuthylazine and carbamazepine can have several sub-lethal effects on anurans, which may be detrimental to individual fitness and population persistence in natural conditions. Our findings further highlight that toxic effects cannot be generalized between chemicals of similar structure, because the terbuthylazine effects we found do not conform with previously reported effects of atrazine, a related and extensively studied herbicide.

The quality of groundwater (GW) resources is decreasing partly due to chemical contaminations from a wide range of activities, such as industrial and agricultural enterprises and changes in land-use. In urban areas, one potential major pathway of GW contamination is associated with urban water management practices based on stormwater runoff infiltration systems (SIS). Data on the performance of the upper layer of soil and the unsaturated zone of infiltration basins to limit the contamination of GW by hydrophilic compounds are lacking. With this aim, the impact of infiltration practices on GW contamination was assessed for 12 pesticides and 4 pharmaceuticals selected according to their ecotoxicological relevance and their likelihood of being present in urban stormwater and GW. For this purpose, 3 campaigns were conducted at 4 SIS during storm events. For each campaign, passive samplers based on the use of Empore™ disk were deployed in GW wells upstream and downstream of SIS, as well as in the stormwater runoff entering the infiltration basins. Upstream and downstream GW contaminations were compared to evaluate the potential effect of SIS on GW contamination and possible relationships with stormwater runoff composition were examined. Our results showed two interesting opposite trends: (i) carbendazim, diuron, fluopyram, imidacloprid and lamotrigine had concentrations significantly increasing in GW impacted by infiltration, indicating a contribution of SIS to GW contamination, (ii) atrazine, simazine and 2 transformation products exhibited concentrations significantly decreasing with infiltration due to a probable dilution of historic GW contaminants with infiltrated stormwater runoff. The other 7 contaminants showed no general trend. This study demonstrates that passive samplers deployed in GW wells enabled the capture of emerging polar pollutants present at very low concentrations and allowed the assessment of infiltration practices on GW quality. New data on GW and urban stormwater are provided for poorly studied hazardous compounds.

How environmental chemicals can affect and exert their toxic effect at a molecular level has gained significant interest in recent years, not only for understanding their immediate health implications over exposed individuals, but also for their subsequent progeny. Atrazine (ATZ) is a commonly used herbicide in the U.S. and a long-suspected endocrine disrupting chemical. The molecular mechanism conferring long-term adverse health outcomes, however, remain elusive. Here, we explored changes in epigenetic marks that arise after exposure to ATZ at selected doses using image-based analysis coupled with data clustering. Significant decreases in methylated CpG (ᵐᵉCpG) and histone 3 lysine 9 tri-methylated (H3K9me3) were observed in the selected human cell line with a clear spatial preference. Treating cells with ATZ leads to the loss of a subpopulation of cells with high ᵐᵉCpG levels as identified in our clustering and histogram analysis. A similar trend was observed in H3K9me3 potentially attributing to the cross-talking between ᵐᵉCpG and H3K9me3. Changes in ᵐᵉCpG are likely to be associated with alterations in epigenetic enzyme expression levels regulating ᵐᵉCpG and persist after the removal of ATZ source which collectively provide a plausible mechanism for long-term ATZ-induced toxicity.

Metagenomics has provided the discovery of genes and metabolic pathways involved in the degradation of xenobiotics. Some microorganisms can metabolize these compounds, potentiating phytoremediation in association with plant. This study aimed to study the metagenome and the occurrence of atrazine degradation genes in rhizospheric soils of the phytoremediation species Inga striata and Caesalphinea ferrea. The genera of microorganisms predominant in the rhizospheric soils of I. striata and C. ferrea were Mycobacterium, Conexibacter, Bradyrhizobium, Solirubrobacter, Rhodoplanes, Streptomyces, Geothrix, Gaiella, Nitrospira, and Haliangium. The atzD, atzE, and atzF genes were detected in the rhizospheric soils of I. striata and atzE and atzF in the rhizospheric soils of C. ferrea. The rhizodegradation by both tree species accelerates the degradation of atrazine residues, eliminating toxic effects on plants highly sensitive to this herbicide. This is the first report for the species Agrobacterium rhizogenes and Candidatus Muproteobacteria bacterium and Micromonospora genera as atrazine degraders.
