The purpose of this study was to investigate antibiotic resistant fungal (ARF) communities in pig manure (PM) composting employing two different biochar (coconut shell-CSB and bamboo biochar-BB) as amendment. Three treatments (Control, 10% CSB and 10% BB) were designed and indicated with T1 to T3. Experimental results declared that the fungal abundance significantly reduced among the both biochar applied treatments but three dominant phyla Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and Mucoromycota were still relatively greater abundance present. There were significant differences (p < 0.05) in the relative abundance and diversity of fungi among all three treatments. Interestingly, biochar addition regulated the overall fungal community in final compost. Compared with the control group, the abundance of fungi was positively mobilized, and especially CSB showed a better effect. Conclusively, biochar has potential to inhibit and reduce the ARGs population and mobility in compost. Thus, these findings offer new insight to understand the succession of ARFs during PM composting.

Biodegradation of microplastics (MPs) in contaminated biowastes has received big scientific attention during the past few years. The aim here is to study the impacts of livestock manure biochar (LMBC) on the biodegradation of polyhydroxyalkanoate microplastics (PHA-MPs) during composting, which have not yet been verified. LMBC (10% wt/wt) and PHA-MPs (0.5% wt/wt) were added to a mixture of pristine cow manure and sawdust for composting, whereas a mixture without LMBC served as the control (CK). The maximum degradation rate of PHA-MPs (22–31%) was observed in the thermophilic composting stage in both mixtures. LMBC addition significantly (P < 0.05) promoted PHA-MPs degradation and increased the carbon loss and oxygen loading of PHA-MPs compared to CK. Adding LMBC accelerated the cleavage of C–H bonds and oxidation of PHA-MPs, and increased the O–H, CO and C–O functional groups on MPs. Also, LMBC addition increased the relative abundance of dominant microorganisms (Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Deinococcus-Thermus, Bacteroidetes, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota) and promoted the enrichment of MP-degrading microbial biomarkers (e.g., Bacillus, Thermobacillus, Luteimonas, Chryseolinea, Aspergillus and Mycothermus). LMBC addition further increased the complexity and connectivity between dominant microbial biomarkers and PHA-MPs degradation characteristics, strengthened their positive relationship, thereby accelerated PHA-MPs biodegradation, and mitigated the potential environmental and human health risk. These findings provide a reference point for reducing PHA-MPs in compost and safe recycling of MPs contaminated organic wastes. However, these results should be validated with other composting matrices and conditions.

The atmosphere as a temporary habitat for airborne microbial communities is a valuable topic to explore, and it is through aerobiological studies that the diversity of biological particles and their release, emission, transport, deposition, and impact are assessed. Specific microorganisms are involved in meteorological processes, and phytosanitary and public health concerns. Airborne microbial composition is related to factors such as geographic region and weather conditions.In this study a metagenomic approach was used to determine the composition of bacterial and fungal communities in the air of two different land-use areas (urban area and semi-rural area), during dry and rainy seasons in Mexico City. Air sampling was carried out with a Hirst-type spore trap, collecting the samples simultaneously in both study areas. Forty-two bioaerosol samples were collected, and the DNA obtained was sequenced using Next-Generation Sequencing. The results indicated that the bacterial communities were represented mainly by the phyla Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, and the fungal communities by the phyla Ascomycota followed by Basidiomycota. The evident changes in microbial composition were related more to seasonality than to locality, since both UA and SRA showed a high degree of urbanization, despite some differences in land use. Continuous monitoring of atmospheric bioaerosols is essential to determine the influence of meteorological factors on the composition of the aerial microbiota.

Thermal desorption is widely adopted for the remediation of organic compounds, yet is generally considered a non-green-sustainable manner owing to its energy-intensive nature and potential to deteriorate soil reuse. Here, lube oil-contaminated soils were remediated at 200–500 °C in nitrogen atmosphere, upon which removal behaviors of lube oil and physicochemical properties of soils were explored. Illumina 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and 18S rRNA amplicon sequencing were employed to determine the relative abundances and diversities of bacteria and fungi in soils, respectively. The results indicated that, after heating at 350 °C for 60 min, 93% of the lube oil was reduced, with the residual lube oil concentration lower than the Chinese risk intervention values (GB 36600–2018). The weakly-alkaline, multi-phosphorus and char-rich soils after indirect thermal desorption could provide a nutrient source and favorable habitat space for living organisms, and the decomposition of minerals in soils is more conducive to the survival of organisms. Microbial species in soils after heating at 350 °C became extinct, however, microbial species after 3 days of recolonization were enough to carry out DNA extraction when these soils were exposed to natural grass land. Though the microbial richness and diversity in heated soils after 3 days of recolonization were still little lower than those in contaminated soils, Firmicutes (29.41%) and Basidiomycota (9.33%) became dominant at phyla level, while Planomicrobium (16.37%), Massilia (10.09%), Jeotgalibaca (7.91%) and Psychrobacter (6.84%) were dominant at general level, whose ecological function was more conducive to nutrient cycling and ecological resiliency. Overall, this innovative research provides a new perspective: low temperature indirect thermal desorption may also achieve a sustainable remediation, due to its energy-saving (low temperature), favorable physicochemical properties and the rapid recolonization capacity of microbial communities in heated soils.

Health effects by consuming urban garden products are discussed controversially due to high urban pollution loads. We sampled wild edible mushrooms of different habitats and commercial mushroom cultivars exposed to high traffic areas within Berlin, Germany. We determined the content of cadmium and lead in the fruiting bodies and analysed how the local setting shaped the concentration patterns. EU standards for cultivated mushrooms were exceeded by 86% of the wild mushroom samples for lead and by 54% for cadmium but not by mushroom cultures. We revealed significant differences in trace metal content depending on species, trophic status, habitat and local traffic burden. Higher overall traffic burden increased trace metal content in the biomass of wild mushrooms, whereas cultivated mushrooms exposed to inner city high traffic areas had significantly lower trace metal contents. Based on these we discuss the consequences for the consumption of mushrooms originating from urban areas.

Soil metal pollution can trigger evolutionary adaptation in soil-borne organisms. An in vitro screening test showed cadmium adaptation in populations of Suillus luteus (L.: Fr.) Roussel, an ectomycorrhizal fungus of pine trees. Cadmium stress was subsequently investigated in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings inoculated with a Cd-tolerant S. luteus, isolated from a heavy metal contaminated site, and compared to plants inoculated with a Cd-sensitive isolate from a non-polluted area. A dose-response experiment with mycorrhizal pines showed better plant protection by a Cd-adapted fungus: more fungal biomass and a higher nutrient uptake at high Cd exposure. In addition, less Cd was transferred to aboveground plant parts. Because of the key role of the ectomycorrhizal symbiosis for tree fitness, the evolution of Cd tolerance in an ectomycorrhizal partner such as S. luteus can be of major importance for the establishment of pine forests on Cd-contaminated soils. The evolutionary adaptation for higher Cd tolerance in Suillus luteus, an ectomycorrhizal fungus, is of major importance for the amelioration of Cd toxicity in pine trees exposed to high Cd concentrations.

Recently, inhalable particulate matter has been reported to carry microorganisms responsible for human allergy and respiratory disease. The unique geographical environment and adverse weather conditions of Urumqi cause double pollution of dust and smog, but research on the microbial content of the atmosphere has not been commenced. In this study, 16S and 18S rRNA gene sequencing were conducted to investigate the microbial composition of Urumqi's PM1 and PM10 pollutants in winter. Results showed that the bacterial community is mainly composed of Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria accounted for the most proportion which was significant difference in some aforementioned studies. Ascomycota and Basidiomycota constitute the main part of the fungal microbial community. The difference of bacterial relative abundance in sample point is greater than in particle sizes. The sequences of several pathogenic bacteria and opportunistic pathogens were also detected, such as Acinetobacter, Delftia, Serratia, Chryseobacterium, which may impact on immunocompromised populations (elderly, children and postoperative convalescence patients), and some fungal genera may cause several plant diseases. Our findings may serve an important reference value in the global air microbial propagation and air microbial research in desert.

The conventional wastewater treatment system such as bacteria, is not able to remove recalcitrant micropollutants effectively. While, fungi have shown high capacity in degradation of recalcitrant compounds. Biochar, on the other hand, has gained attention in water and wastewater treatment as a low cost and sustainable adsorbent. This paper aims to review the recent applications of three major fungal divisions including Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, and Mucoromycotina, in organic micropollutants removal from wastewater. Moreover, it presents an insight into fungal bioreactors, fungal biofilm and immobilization system. Biochar adsorption capacities for organic micropollutants removal under different operating conditions are summarized. Finally, few recommendations for further research are established in the context of the combination of fungal biofilm with the technologies relying on the adsorption by porous carbonaceous materials.

The salinization of grassland in arid and semi-arid areas is a serious environmental issue in China. Halophytes show extreme salt tolerance and are grown in saline-alkaline environments. Their rhizosphere microorganisms contribute significantly to plant stress tolerance. To study bacterial and fungal community structure changes in Chinese ryegrass (Leymus chinensis) rhizosphere soil under salt and alkali stress, pot experiments were conducted with different salt and alkali stress intensities. High-throughput sequencing was conducted, and the microbial diversity, community structure, and driving factors were analyzed in rhizosphere soil. The salinization of grassland in arid and semi-arid areas is a serious environmental issue in China. Halophytes show extreme salt tolerance and grow in saline-alkaline environments. A total of 549 species of bacteria from 28 phyla and 250 species from 11 phyla of fungi were detected in the rhizosphere soil of Leymus chinensis with different saline-alkali gradients. Alpha diversity analysis along saline-alkali gradients showed that bacterial community richness and diversity were the highest in the moderate saline-alkali group (pH = 8.28, EC = 160.4 μS·cm⁻¹), while fungi had high richness and diversity in the control group (pH = 7.35, EC = 134.5 μS·cm⁻¹). The bacteriophyta Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Plantomycetes, and the eumycota Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Glomeromycota were found with relative abundances of more than 10%. Saline-alkali gradients had significant effects on the abundance of the bacterial and fungal groups in the rhizosphere. The distribution of bacterial colony structure was not significant at the species level (P > 0.05). However, there were significant differences in the distribution of fungal structure and considerable differences in the composition of fungal species among the moderate saline-alkali group, severe saline-alkali group, and control group (P < 0.05). Correlation analysis showed that the bacterial phylum Gemmatimonadetes had a highly significant positive correlation with pH and EC (P < 0. 01). Saline-alkali stress significantly inhibited the abundance of the bacteria Latescibacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Bacteroides, and the fungi Zoopagomycota, Mortierllomycota, and Cryptomycota (P < 0. 05). Compared with fungi, bacterial community composition was most closely correlated with soil salinization. This report provided new insights into the responses of relationships between rhizosphere soil microorganisms and salt and alkali tolerance of plants.

Mangrove ecosystems are tropical environments that are characterized by the interaction between the land and the sea. As such, this ecosystem is vulnerable to oil spills. Here, we show a culture-independent survey of fungal communities that are found in the sediments of the following two mangroves that are located on the coast of Sao Paulo State (Brazil): (1) an oil-spill-affected mangrove and (2) a nearby unaffected mangrove. Samples were collected from each mangrove forest at three distinct locations (transect from sea to land), and the samples were analyzed by quantitative PCR and internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-based PCR-DGGE analysis. The abundance of fungi was found to be higher in the oil-affected mangrove. Visual observation and correspondence analysis (CA) of the ITS-based PCR-DGGE profiles revealed differences in the fungal communities between the sampled areas. Remarkably, the oil-spilled area was quite distinct from the unaffected sampling areas. On the basis of the ITS sequences, fungi that are associated with the Basidiomycota and Ascomycota taxa were most common and belonged primarily to the genera Epicoccum, Nigrospora, and Cladosporium. Moreover, the Nigrospora fungal species were shown to be sensitive to oil, whereas a group that was described as “uncultured Basidiomycota” was found more frequently in oil-contaminated areas. Our results showed an increase in fungal abundance in the oil-polluted mangrove regions, and these data indicated potential fungal candidates for remediation of the oil-affected mangroves.
