Contaminated groundwater is considered as one of the most important pathways of human exposure to the geogenic contaminants. Present study has been conducted in a part of Indus basin to investigate the presence and spatial distribution of arsenic (As) and other trace metals in groundwater. The As concentration varies from bdl-255.6 μg/L and 24.6% of the 73 collected groundwater samples have As above world health organization (WHO) guideline of 10 μg/L. High concentration of As is found along the newer alluvium of Ravi River. As is found with high bicarbonate (HCO3−) and Iron (Fe) and low nitrate (NO3−) indicating reductive dissolution of Fe bearing minerals. However, silicate weathering along with high sulphate (SO42) and positive oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) indicates mixed redox conditions. Weathering of minerals along with other major hydrogeochemical process are responsible for composition of groundwater. With 31.5% of the samples, sodium bicarbonate (Na–HCO3) is the major water facies followed by magnesium bicarbonate (Mg–HCO3) in 30% of samples. As, Fe and other trace metals including copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn) were used to calculate the health risk for children and adults in the region. Out of 73 samples, 58% has high Fe, 32.8% has high Zn, and 4.1% has high Cd which are above the prescribed limits of WHO guidelines. Health risk of the population has been assessed using chronic dose index (CDI), hazardous quotients (HQ) and hazardous index (HI) for children and adults. The mean CDI values follows the order as Fe > Zn > Cu > As > Cr > Cd, while the HQ values indicates high As hazards for both children and adults. 43.8% of the groundwater samples have high HI for adults, however, 49.3% has high HI for children indicating higher risk for children compared to adults. A large-scale testing should be prioritized to test the wells for As and other trace metals in the study region to reduce health risks.

The strict environmental management has been implemented in Taihu Basin to reduce the surface water contamination; however, the effectiveness of the management actions has not been comprehensively evaluated. In the present study, 364 samples were collected during four campaigns over a span of one year from surface water, municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs), industrial wastewater treatment plants (IWWTPs), industrial enterprises, and aquaculture in a typical region in the Upper Taihu Basin. Overall concentration, temporal variation and spatial distribution of 16 PAHs in surface water and various pollution sources were evaluated and the potential pollution sources were identified. Results showed that concentrations of individual PAHs in the surface water ranged from less than the limit of quantification (LOQ) to 949 ng L⁻¹, indicating a reduction of PAH contamination level after the implementation of environmental management actions. Influent of MWWTPs and wastewater from industrial enterprises exhibited relatively high ∑PAHs concentrations (mean: 880 ng L⁻¹ and 642 ng L⁻¹, respectively); these samples also exhibited a similar seasonal variation as well as composition of PAH congeners to those found in surface water, and therefore were designated as the main emission sources of PAHs in the studied region. Additional source apportionment using principal component analysis was also conducted to verify the proposed sources and diagnose other pollution sources. The findings provided a thorough understanding of PAH pollution, especially its major emission sources, in a typical region with pollution-intensive industries after the implementation of strict environmental management.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can undergo long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) and deposit in remote areas. How persistent are POPs in remote areas? To answer this question, we measured two parent-DDTs and eight metabolites in soil and air along a transect in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China, to quantitatively evaluate the degree of degradation of DDTs. DDTs were ubiquitous in soil and air with the total DDT concentrations (Σ₁₀DDTs) ranging 37.7–70,100 pg g⁻¹ dw and 3.4–175 pg m⁻³, respectively. The air-soil equilibrium status indicated that the forest/basin soil was a source for most DDTs, while the plateau soil was a sink receiving DDTs from the LRAT and photodegradation in the air (for metabolites). The metabolites accounted for avg. 64.1% of Σ₁₀DDTs in soil, with avg. 93.2% from local degradation, implying the overall high degradation of DDTs. With the significant degradation, the continuous input via LRAT was deemed to be the main reason for the stable level (persistence) of POPs in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of source control for the risk management of POPs. POPs in the environment might decline rapidly due to a reduction in source input and significant degradation as indicated by our study.

This study employs the grain size distributions and the concentrations and isotopic compositions of Sr, Nd, and Pb in the precipitation samples collected from the Laohugou Glacier (LHG) in northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) during August 2014–2015 to investigate seasonal variability in the insoluble precipitation particle sources. Fine dust particle (0.57–27 μm) depositions dominated in autumn and winter, whereas both fine and coarse dust particle (27–100 μm) depositions were found in spring and summer. Furthermore, the concentrations of Sr, Nd, and Pb also varied seasonally—the highest and lowest Sr and Nd concentrations were recorded in spring and autumn, respectively, whereas the highest and lowest Pb concentrations were recorded in winter and summer, respectively. The Sr and Nd isotopes revealed that the dust in the winter precipitation originated predominately from the Taklimakan Desert and that in spring originated from the Badain Jaran and Qaidam deserts. The precipitation residues in summer were derived from a complex mixture of dust sources from the Gobi and other large deserts in northwest China. Autumn residues were predominately sourced from local soil near the LHG as well as from the Qaidam Basin and the northern TP surface soil. The Taklimakan, long suspected as a major source of long-range transported dust, was an insignificant contributor to the precipitation over LHG during spring, summer, and autumn. Further, the Pb isotopic ratios indicated a primary impact of anthropogenic pollutants for most part of the year (except spring). Meteorological data and the MODIS AOD model are in good agreement with the results from the analyses of the Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopes for the LHG particle source, and further clarify the source regions. Thus, this study thus provides new evidence on the seasonal variability of the sources of the residual particles in remote glaciers in Central Asia.

This study provided a comprehensive characterization on ingestion of different typologies of microplastics in several fish and invertebrate species from the Adriatic Sea, considered as a preferential area of plastic accumulation in the Mediterranean. Almost 500 organisms were sampled in the three sectors of Northern, Central and Southern Adriatic, testing the hypothesis that area of collection, habitat and feeding strategy might influence the occurrence of plastic particles in biota. In this study, the overall characterization considered separately plastic microparticles (MPs) from textile microfibers (MFs) which also included natural and semi-synthetic ones. Ingestion of MPs was a widespread phenomenon, but their number (typically 1 or 2) did not reveal any significant relationship with biometric values, geographical areas or ecological features of the species. Conversely, the frequency of ingestion, ranging from 13 to 35% of organisms containing MPs, appeared a more reliable index to highlight such differences, revealing higher values in species from Central and Southern basins compared to the Northern one, as well as in benthopelagic compared to benthic or pelagic organisms. Geographical differences also occurred in terms of size and typology of ingested particles, suggesting the importance of local river runoffs and surface currents dynamics. Textile microfibers (MFs) were also abundant in Adriatic food webs occurring in all the analyzed species with average numbers (3–10) and frequencies (40–70%) higher than those reported for MPs; further, an elevated percentage of MFs (>80%) was of natural or semi-synthetic origin.Overall, this study provided general insights toward the harmonization of a common biomonitoring strategy, as in the context of MSFD, including the suggestion of a frequency-based index and of a multi-species approach to increase the ecological relevance of assessment, as well as the comparability between different areas and trophic webs.

Microfibres are one of the most ubiquitous particulate pollutants, occurring in all environmental compartments. They are often assumed to be microplastics, but include natural as well as synthetic textile fibres and are perhaps best treated as a separate class of pollutants given the challenges they pose in terms of identification and contamination. Microfibres have been largely ignored by traditional methods used to sample floating microplastics at sea, which use 300–500 μm mesh nets that are too coarse to sample most textile fibres. There is thus a need for a consistent set of methods for sampling microfibres in seawater. We processed bulk water samples through 0.7–63 μm filters to collect microfibres in three ocean basins. Fibre density increased as mesh size decreased: 20 μm mesh sampled 41% more fibres than 63 μm, and 0.7 μm filters sampled 44% more fibres than 25 μm mesh, but mesh size (20–63 μm) had little effect on the size of fibres retained. Fibre density decreased with sample volume when processed through larger mesh filters, presumably because more fibres were flushed through the filters. Microfibres averaged 2.5 times more abundant at the sea surface than in water sampled 5 m sub-surface. However, the data were noisy; counts of replicate 10-L samples had low repeatability (0.15–0.36; CV = 56%), suggesting that single samples provide only a rough estimate of microfibre abundance. We propose that sampling for microfibres should use a combination of <1 μm and 20–25 μm filters and process multiple samples to offset high within-site variability in microfibre densities.

Recent research suggests contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are widespread and environmentally relevant concentrations can impact fishes. However, little is known about impacts of CECs to long-lived or rare species. The objective of this study was to characterize CEC concentrations in lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) serum and gametes. Blood serum was collected non-lethally from lake sturgeon at four lower Great Lakes basin sites: Detroit, upper Niagara, lower Niagara, and St. Lawrence rivers; additionally, gametes were collected from lake sturgeon in the St. Lawrence River. Samples were analyzed for pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Overall, 44 different PPCPs were identified in serum and gamete samples across sites, with 22 PPCPs identified in at least 25% of serum samples and three PPCPs identified in 25% of gamete samples. PPCP concentrations in serum and gametes ranged from 0.00208 to 130 ppb and 0.00538–190 ppb, respectively. NMDS ordination revealed differences in the presence and concentrations of PPCPs in lake sturgeon serum across sites, however, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), hydrocortisone, benztropine, and amitriptyline were detected in at least one serum sample at all sites. Additionally, DEET, 10-hydroxy-amitriptyline, and sertraline were detected in ≥25% of gamete samples collected from the St. Lawrence River. Twenty-six PBDE congeners were identified in 25% of serum samples and 24 were identified in 25% of gamete samples. PBDEs in serum were present across all sites and in gametes of St. Lawrence River lake sturgeon, and total PBDE concentrations in serum and gametes ranged from 0.184 to 12.7 ppb and 0.0826–0.44 ppb, respectively. Managers of lake sturgeon populations may need to consider the impacts of CECs if reproductive, developmental, behavioral, growth effects, or mortality are observed in the Great Lakes basin or other areas that are impacted by increased exposures to PPCPs and PBDEs.

The contamination of ground water with arsenic is a great public health concern. This paper discusses the possible formation mechanism of high As groundwater; identify the main influences of natural and anthropogenic factors on As occurrence in groundwater; and finally estimates As-induced potential health hazards in an intensive agricultural region, Datong Basin (Northern China). Our findings indicate that the predominant controlling factors of As in groundwater can be divided into natural factors and anthropogenic activities. Natural factors can be classified as natural potential source of As, environmental geological characteristics and hydrochemical conditions; anthropogenic activities are manifested in industrial coal mining, domestic coal burning, agricultural irrigation return flow and excessive application of fertilizers, and groundwater exploitation. Microbial and/or chemical reduction desorption of arsenate from Fe-oxide/hydroxide and/or clay minerals, As-bearing Fe-oxide/hydroxide reduction coupled with sulfate reduction, and competition with phosphorus are postulated to be the major process dominating As enrichment in the alkaline and anoxic groundwater. In addition, age-dependent human health risk assessment (HHRS) was performed, and high risk values reveal a high toxic and carcinogenic risk of As contaminate for population who is subject to the continuous and chronic exposure to elevated As.

Recently, the frequent occurrence of haze with aerosol pollution in China has attracted worldwide attention. Air pollutant emissions in conjunction with changing meteorological conditions create environment pollution in China. Aerosol pollution is spatially centralized in four regions of China, including the North China Plain, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, and Sichuan Basin. In this observational study, a new center of aerosol pollution was identified in the Twain-Hu Basin (THB), covering the Hubei and Hunan provinces in central China. Based on the analysis of 19 years of satellite remote sensing data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the THB experiences high aerosol optical depth (AOD) values exceeding 0.9. The fine mode fraction (FMF) values below 0.3 were also detected over the aerosol polluted THB region, where aerosol pollution was dominated by the mixed aerosol type. This reflects the role of intense human activities and the unique aerosol processes involved in the regional aerosol pollution over central China. The interannual AOD variations for THB present an increasing trend (mostly >0.02 yr⁻¹) between 2000 and 2011 and a significant descending trend (mostly < -0.06 yr⁻¹) between 2011 and 2018. This inverse trends in AOD with an overall increasing trend in FMF characterizes the past 19 years. This highlights the contribution of the increase in submicron particles and meteorological effects to the regional aerosol concentrations during recent years when considering the reduced anthropogenic aerosol emissions in the THB.

The transport of trace metals in river–lake systems can potentially increase or decrease primary productivity in some basins and subsequently affect the carbon cycle of watersheds. In this study, we investigated a variety of trace metal concentrations and transport flux in the Poyang Lake basin during four seasons. Results show that the Gan River transports 78% of selenium (Se) and 42% of lead (Pb) into Poyang Lake each year, resulting in heavy metal pollution dominated by Pb and Se in 30%–75% of its water. Although toxic heavy metals, such as Pb, chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu), inhibit phytoplankton growth and decrease its gross primary productivity (GPP), excessive Se could effectually promote productivity. However, the negative effect of Pb on GPP is more significant than the positive effect of Se on GPP; hence, their interaction effectuates a decrease in total primary productivity. Additionally, under high nutrients level, the synergistic effect of heavy metals and nutrients will reduce GPP. Agricultural fertilizer is likely the source of both Pb, Cu, Se and N. Gan River contributes 35%–80% of the heavy metal inputs to Poyang Lake. It is therefore necessary to improve the ecological environment of phytoplankton and promote productivity in the Poyang Lake basin by reducing the application of agricultural chemical fertilizers to control pollution. Our results indicate that the role of certain, less studied trace elements (e.g., Pb, Cr, Cu, and Se) in regulating primary productivity of watershed ecosystems is more important than previously thought. This study also discusses potential impacting mechanisms associated with these metals on phytoplankton, whose biological functions need to be verified in future experiments.
