Glandless cotton can be grown to obtain cotton seeds free of toxic gossypol for use as both food and feed. However, they are not grown normally due to their lesser productivity and higher susceptibility to biotic stress. Great attention has been paid to biotic stresses rather than abiotic stresses on glandless cotton. Chromium (Cr) is a common pollutant of soil and considered a serious threat to plants due to its adverse effects on different functions. Although numerous studies are available on the toxicity of Cr⁶⁺ in various plants. However, its adverse effects and mechanism of toxicity in glandless cotton can seldom be found in the literature. This study examined the Cr⁶⁺ effect on glandless cotton in comparison to glanded cotton. Four pairs of glanded and glandless cotton near-isogenic lines (NILs) were exposed to different doses (0, 10, 50, and 100 μM/L) of Cr⁶⁺ for seven days, and biochemical, physiological, molecular, and ultrastructure changes were observed, which were significantly affected by Cr⁶⁺ at high concentrations in all NILs. The effect of Cr⁶⁺ on ionic contents shows the same trend in glanded and glandless NILs except for manganese (Mn²⁺) that show inhibition in glandless (ZMS-12w and Coker-312w) and enhance in the glanded NIL (ZMS-17). The gene expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) revealed similar trends as enzyme activities in glandless NILs. The principal component analysis (PCA) and Agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) results of all NILs from morpho-physiological traits, cluster ZMS-16, and ZMS-17 into Cr⁶⁺ sensitive group. While the glandless NILs have the potential to cope with the Cr toxicity by increasing the antioxidant enzyme activity and their gene expression. This study also revealed that Cr⁶⁺ tolerance in cotton is genotypic and has an independent mechanism in the root that not related to low gossypol.

We investigated how the adaptation to metalliferous environments can influence the plant response to biotic stress. In a metallicolous and a non-metallicolous population of Silene paradoxa the induction of oxidative stress and the production of callose and volatiles were evaluated in the presence of copper and of the PAMP fungal protein cerato-platanin, separately and in combination. Our results showed incompatibility between the ordinary ROS-mediated response to fungal attack and the acquired mechanisms of preventing oxidative stress in the tolerant population. A similar situation was also demonstrated by the sensitive population growing in the presence of copper but, in this case, with a lack of certain responses, such as callose production. In addition, in terms of the joint behaviour of emitted volatiles, multivariate statistics showed that not only did the populations respond differently to the presence of copper or biotic stress, but also that the biotic and abiotic stresses interacted in different ways in the two populations.Our results demonstrated that the same incompatibility of hyperaccumulators in ROS-mediated biotic stress signals also seemed to be exhibited by the excluder metallophyte, but without the advantage of being able to rely on the elemental defence for plant protection from natural enemies.

Single and joint ectomycorrhizal (+ Hebeloma mesophaeum) and bacterial (+ Bacillus cereus) inoculations of willows (Salix viminalis) were investigated for their potential and mode of action in the promotion of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) phytoextraction. Dual fungal and bacterial inoculations promoted the biomass production of willows in contaminated soil. Single inoculations either had no effect on the plant growth or inhibited it. All inoculated willows showed increased concentrations of nutritional elements (N, P, K and Zn) and decreased concentrations of Cd in the shoots. The lowest biomass production and concentration of Cd in the willows (+ B. cereus) were combined with the strongest expression of metallothioneins. It seems that biotic stress from bacterial invasion increased the synthesis of these stress proteins, which responded in decreased Cd concentrations. Contents of Cd and Zn in the stems of willows were combination-specific, but were always increased in dual inoculated plants. In conclusion, single inoculations with former mycorrhiza-associated B. cereus strains decreased the phytoextraction efficiency of willows by causing biotic stress. However, their joint inoculation with an ectomycorrhizal fungus is a very promising method for promoting the phytoextraction of Cd and Zn through combined physiological effects on the plant.

Increasing crop yields and ensuring food security is a major global challenge. In order to increase crop production, chemical fertilizers and pesticides are excessively used. However, the significance of root exudates is understudied. Beneficial interactions between plant and rhizosphere microbiome are critical for plant fitness and health. In this review, we discuss the application and progress of current research methods and technologies in terms of root exudates and rhizosphere microbiome. We summarize how root exudates promote plant access to nitrogen, phosphorus, and iron, and how root exudates strengthen plant immunity to cope with biotic stress by regulating the rhizosphere microbiome, and thereby reducing dependence on fertilizers and pesticides. Optimizing these interactions to increase plant nutrient uptake and resistance to biotic stresses offers one of the few untapped opportunities to confront sustainability issues in food security. To overcome the limitations of current research, combination of multi-omics, imaging technology together with synthetic communities has the potential to uncover the interaction mechanisms and to fill the knowledge gap for their applications in agriculture to achieve sustainable development.

Silicon (Si) is considered an important component for plant growth, development, and yield in many crop species. Silicon is also known to reduce plant pests. Although Si, the major component of soil next to oxygen, it is not used as a major nutrient by crop plants. However, extensive literature demonstrate the beneficial effects of soluble silicates, like silicon [orthosilicic acid (Si(H₄SiO₄)], on reducing biotic stress in crop ecosystems. In general, monocots tend to accumulate substantially more Si in plant tissues than dicots. Si accumulates in plant cell walls, providing protection by increasing the synthesis of lignin and phenolic compounds and activating the endogenous chemical defenses of plants including volatile and non-volatile compounds and other physical structures like trichomes. This review provides an overview of the history of silicon use in agriculture in India, for the management of insect pests. The future research needs in this field of study are also presented.

Nanotechnology is a novel arena with promising applications in the field of medicine, industry, and agriculture including fisheries. Cross-disciplinary interactions and the application of this technology in biological systems have led to the innovation of novel nanoparticle antioxidants, which are the subject of our study. In context with above background, we designed an experiment on nano-silver to elucidate its role for mitigation of abiotic and biotic stress. Three diets were formulated viz. silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) incorporated at 0.5 and 1 mg/kg diet and control diet (Ag-NPs at 0 mg/kg). Fish were exposed to sublethal level of 1/25th of LC₅₀ (4 ppm) of lead (Pb) and temperature at 34 °C. The effect of Ag-NPs on productive performance (weight gain %, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, and specific growth rate), stress biomarkers (catalase, super oxide dismutase, glutathione-s-transferase, acetylcholine esterase, cortisol, heat shock protein), biochemical and immunological response (protein and carbohydrate metabolic enzymes, phagocytic activity, serum total protein and albumin: globulin ratio), histopathology alterations in the liver and gill as well as survival of Channa striatus, following challenge with pathogenic bacteria were evaluated. Dietary Ag-NPs at 0.5-mg supplementation improved growth performance, immunity, survival, and reduced stress biomarker such as HSP 70, cortisol, and blood glucose in various fish tissues. Exposure to Pb and high temperature and group fed with Ag-NPs (1 mg/kg diet) demonstrated remarkable changes in the histo-architect of liver such as pyknotic nuclei, pyknosis, leucocyte infiltration, hemorrhage and karyokinesis, blood vessels with nucleated, lipid vacuoles in the liver tissue. Histology of gill displayed hyperplasia, aneurism, blood congestion, severe telengiectiasis, epithelial lifting, curling of secondary lamella, hyperplasia of epithelial cell of secondary lamella in the group exposed to lead and high temperature and supplemented with Ag-NPs at 1 mg/kg diet. In addition to histopathology, feeding with Ag-NPs at 1 mg/kg diet deteriorated and altered all studied parameters including reduced growth performance. Results obtained in the present study suggest that supplementation of Ag-NPs at 0.5 mg/kg diet has a definitive role to play in the mitigation of abiotic and biotic stress in C. striatus.

A field trial was carried out to examine the influence of residual acidified biochar (a 3:100 (w/w) mixture of citric acid and citrus wood biochar) on soil properties, growth, water status, photosynthetic efficiency, metal accumulation, nutrition status, yield, and irrigation use efficiency (IUE) of maize grown under salty soil and metal-contaminated irrigation water. The acidified biochar (ABC) was applied to faba bean in 2016/2017 in saline soil (electrical conductivity (ECe) 7.6 dS m⁻¹) with three levels 0, 5, and 10 t ha⁻¹ with 4 replications. The results summarized that after a year of utilization, acidified biochar still significantly affected the growth and yield by improved soil properties and decreased maize uptake of sodium by transient sodium (Na⁺) binding because of its high adsorption capacity. Growth, physiology, and maize yields were influenced positively by ABC application, under metal-contaminated irrigation water. It was summarized that the utilization of ABC had a significant residual (P ≤ 0.05) effect on reducing nickle (Ni), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) accumulation in maize under heavy metal–contaminated irrigation water. However, more detailed open-field experiments should be carried out to assess the long-term residual impacts of ABC for sustaining maize production under biotic stress.

Brassinosteroids are well known to mitigate biotic stresses; however, their role to induce tolerance against Verticillium dahliae is unknown. The current study employed V. dahliae (Vd) toxin as pathogen-free model system to induce stress on cotton callus growth, and its amelioration was investigated using 24-epibrassinolide (EBR). Results revealed that EBR has ameliorative effects against Vd toxin with greater seen effect when callus was treated with EBR prior to its exposure to Vd toxin (pre-EBR treatment) than EBR applied along with Vd toxin simultaneously (co-EBR treatment). Pre-EBR-treated calli remained green, while 65 and 90% callus browning was observed in co-EBR- and Vd toxin-alone-treated callus, respectively. Likewise, the fresh weight of the pre-EBR-treated callus was 52% higher than Vd toxin-alone treatment, whereas this increase was only 23% in co-EBR-treated callus. Meanwhile, EBR treatment of the cotton callus has also increased the contents of chlorophylls a and b, carotenoids, total phenols, flavonoids, soluble sugars, and proteins and increased the activity of enzymes involved in secondary metabolism like polyphenol oxidase (PPO), phenylalanine ammonialyase (PAL), cinnamyl alchol dehydrogenase (CAD), and shikimate dehydrogenase (SKDH) over Vd toxin-alone treatment with higher increments being observed in pre-EBR-treated callus. Furthermore, EBR treatment mimicked the DNA damage and improved the structure of mitochondria, granum, stroma thylakoids, and the attachment of ribosomes with the endoplasmic reticulum. This EBR-mediated mitigation was primarily associated with substantially increased contents of photosynthetic pigments and regulation of secondary metabolism.

Lichens are known to synthesize a variety of secondary metabolites having multifunctional activity in response to external environmental condition. Two common lichen extrolites, atranorin and salazinic acid, are known to afford antioxidant as well as photoprotectant nature depending on the abiotic/biotic stress. The present investigation aims to study the influence of altitudinal gradient on the quantitative profile of atranorin and salazinic acid in three lichen species, Bulbothrix setschwanensis (Zahlbr.) Hale, Everniastrum cirrhatum (Fr.) Hale and Parmotrema reticulatum (Taylor) Choisy, Parmeliaceae using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique. Samples were collected from high-altitude area, usually considered as non-polluted sites of Garhwal Himalaya. Characterization and quantification of the lichen substances in samples were carried out comparing with the standards of atranorin and salazinic acid. Results indicated significant variation in the chemical content with the rising altitude. All the three lichen species showed higher quantities of chemical substances with the altitudinal rise, while among the three lichen species, E. cirrhatum showed the highest quantity of total lichen compounds. The higher abundance and frequency of E. cirrhatum with increasing altitude as compared to B. setschwanensis and P. reticulatum may be attributed due to the presence of higher quantity of photoprotecting/antioxidant chemicals especially salazinic acid. Thus, the present study shows the prominent role of secondary metabolite in wider ecological distribution of Parmelioid lichens at higher altitudes.
