Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China and a globally important wetland with various functions. Exploring the multidecadal trend of water quality and hydroclimatic conditions is important for understanding the adaption of the lake system under the pressure from multiple anthropogenic and meteorological stressors. The present study applied the Mann–Kendall trend analysis and Pettitt test to detect the trend and breakpoints of hydroclimatic, and water quality parameters (from the 1980s to 2018) and the trend of monthly–seasonal ammonia (NH₄-N) and total phosphorus (TP)concentrations (from 2002 to 2018) in Poyang Lake. Results showed that Poyang Lake had undergone a highly significant warming trend from 1980 to 2018, with a warming rate of 0.44 °C/decade in terms of annual daily mean air temperature. The wind speed and water level of the lake presented a highly significant decreasing trend, whereas no notable trend was detected for precipitation variations. The annual mean total nitrogen (TN), NH₄-N, TP, and permanganate index (CODMₙ) concentrations showed significant upward trends from the 1980s to 2018. Remarkable abrupt shifts were detected for TN, NH₄-N, and CODMₙ in around 2003. They were in accordance with the water level breakpoint of the lake, thus implying the important role of hydrological conditions in water quality variations in floodplain lakes. A significant increasing trend has been detected for Chl-a variations during wet season from 2008 to 2018, which could be attributed to the increasing trend of nutrient concentration during the nutrient-limited phase of Poyang Lake. These hydroclimatic and water quality trends suggest a high risk of increasing phytoplankton growth in Poyang Lake. This study thus emphasizes the need for adaptive lake eutrophication management for floodplain lakes, particularly the consideration of the strong trade-off and synergies between hydroclimatic conditions and water quality variations.

Pharmacologically active compounds found in reclaimed wastewater irrigation or animal manure fertilizers pose potential risks for agriculture. The mechanism underlying the effects of ketoprofen on rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings was investigated. The results showed that low concentrations (0.5 mg L⁻¹) of ketoprofen slightly stimulate growth of rice seedlings, while high concentrations can significantly inhibit growth by reducing biomass and causing damage to roots. Ketoprofen affects photosynthetic pigment content (Chla, Chlb, and carotenoids) and chlorophyll synthesis gene (HEMA, HEMG, CHLD, CHLG, CHLM, and CAO) expression. Fluorescence parameters such as minimum fluorescence (F₀), maximum fluorescence (Fₘ), variable fluorescence (Fᵥ), potential photosynthetic capacity (Fᵥ/F₀), maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fᵥ/Fₘ), electron transfer rate (ETR), and Y(II), Y(NPQ), Y(NO) values were affected, showing photosynthetic electron transfer was blocked. Active oxygen radical (O₂•−and H₂O₂), malondialdehyde and proline content increased. Superoxide dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activities, glutathione content and antioxidant-related gene (FSD1, MSD1, CSD1, CSD2, CAT1, CAT2, CAT3, APX1, APX2) expression were induced. Higher integrated biomarker response values of eight oxidative stress response indexes were obtained at higher ketoprofen concentrations. Ultrastructure observation showed that ketoprofen causes cell structure damage, chloroplast swelling, increase in starch granules, and reduction in organelles. This study provides some suggested toxicological mechanisms and biological response indicators in rice due to stress from pharmacologically active compounds.

Biofumigation is an effective, non-chemical method to control soil-borne pests and diseases and to maximize crop yield. We studied the responses of soil bacterial and fungal communities, the soil’s nutritional state and strawberry yield, when the soil was biofumigated each year for five consecutive years using fresh chicken manure (BioFum). BioFum significantly increased the soil’s NH4+-N, NO3−-N, available P and K and organic matter. Fusarium spp. and Phytophthora spp. which are known to cause plant disease, were significantly decreased after BioFum. In addition, Biofum increased the soil’s temperature, enhanced chlorophyll levels in the leaves of strawberry plants, and the soluble sugar and ascorbic acid content in strawberry fruit. We used high-throughput gene sequencing to monitor changes in the soil’s bacterial and fungal communities. Although BioFum significantly decreased the diversity of these communities, it increased the relative abundance of some biological control agents in the phylum Actinobacteria and the genera Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Chaetomium. An increase in these biological control agents would reduce the incidence of soil-borne pathogens and plant disease. Although strawberry marketable yield using BioFum was higher in the first three years, the decline in the final two years could be due to the accumulation of P and K which may have delayed flowering and fruiting. Methods to overcome yield losses using BioFum need to be developed in the future. Our research, however, showed that BioFum enhanced soil fertility, reduced the presence of soil pathogens, increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria and fungi and improved strawberry quality. Unlike chemical soil treatments that can cause pest and disease resistance when used continuously over many years, our multi-year research program on BioFum showed that this treatment provided significant benefits to the soil, plant and strawberry fruit.

Hydroponic experiments were conducted to study the effects of microplastic particles of polystyrene (PS) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) on arsenic (As) content in leaves and roots of rice seedlings, and the changes in root vigor and physiological and biochemical indicators under single or combined PS and PTFE with As(III) treatment. Rice biomass decreased with increasing concentrations of PS, PTFE, and As(III) in the growth medium. The highest root (leaf) biomass decreases were 21.4% (10.2%), 25.4% (11.8%), and 26.2% (16.2%) with the addition of 0.2 g L⁻¹ PS, 0.2 g L⁻¹ PTFE, and 4 mg L⁻¹ As(III), respectively. Microplastic particles and As(III) inhibited biomass accumulation by inhibiting root activity and RuBisCO activity, respectively. The addition of As(III) and microplastic particles (PS or PTFE) inhibited photosynthesis through non-stomatal and stomatal factors, respectively; furthermore, net photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll fluorescence, and the Chl a content of rice were reduced with the addition of As(III) and microplastic particles (PS or PTFE). Microplastic particles and As(III) induced an oxidative burst in rice tissues through mechanical damage and destruction of the tertiary structure of antioxidant enzymes, respectively, thereby increasing O₂⁻ and H₂O₂ in roots and leaves, inducing lipid peroxidation, and destroying cell membranes. When PS and PTFE were added at 0.04 and 0.1 g L⁻¹, respectively, the negative effects of As(III) on rice were reduced. Treatment with 0.2 g L⁻¹ PS or PTFE, combined with As(III), had a higher impact on rice than the application of As(III) alone. PS and PTFE reduced As(III) uptake, and absorbed As decreased with the increasing concentration of microparticles. The underlying mechanisms for these effects may involve direct adsorption of As, competition between As and microplastic particles for adsorption sites on the root surface, and inhibition of root activity by microplastic particles.

To compare aquatic organisms’ responses to the toxicity of copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) with those of CuO microparticles (MPs) and copper (Cu) ions, a global metabolomics approach was employed to investigate the changes of both polar and nonpolar metabolites in microalga Chlorella vulgaris after 5-day exposure to CuO NPs and MPs (1 and 10 mg/L), as well as the corresponding dissolved Cu ions (0.08 and 0.8 mg/L). Unchanged growth, slight reactive oxygen species production, and significant membrane damage (at 10 mg/L CuO particles) in C. vulgaris were demonstrated. A total of 75 differentiated metabolites were identified. Most metabolic pathways perturbed after CuO NPs exposure were shared by those after CuO MPs and Cu ions exposure, including accumulation of chlorophyll intermediates (max. 2.4–5.2 fold), membrane lipids remodeling for membrane protection (decrease of phosphatidylethanolamines (min. 0.6 fold) and phosphatidylcholines (min. 0.2–0.7 fold), as well as increase of phosphatidic acids (max. 1.5–2.9 fold), phosphatidylglycerols (max. 2.2–2.3 fold), monogalactosyldiacylglycerols (max. 1.2–1.4 fold), digalactosylmonoacylglycerols (max. 1.9–3.8 fold), diacylglycerols (max. 1.4 fold), lysophospholipids (max. 1.8–3.0 fold), and fatty acids (max. 3.0–6.2 fold)), perturbation of glutathione metabolism induced by oxidative stress, and accumulation of osmoregulants (max. 1.3–2.6 fold) to counteract osmotic stress. The only difference between metabolic responses to particles and those to ions was the accumulation of fatty acids oxidation products: particles caused higher fold changes (particles/ions ratio 1.9–3.0) at 1 mg/L and lower fold changes (particles/ions ratio 0.4–0.7) at 10 mg/L compared with ions. Compared with microparticles, there was no nanoparticle-specific pathway perturbed. These results confirm the predominant role of dissolved Cu ions on the toxicity of CuO NPs and MPs, and also reveal particle-specific toxicity from a metabolomics perspective.

The combined effect of polystyrene microplastics (mPS) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a common plastic additive, on the microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa was investigated in the present study. The 96 h-IC₅₀ value of DBP was 2.41 mg L⁻¹. Polystyrene microplastics exhibited size-dependent inhibitory effect to C. pyrenoidosa, with the 96 h-IC₅₀ at 6.90 and 7.19 mg L⁻¹ for 0.1 and 0.55 μm mPS respectively, but little toxicity was observed for 5 μm mPS. The interaction parameter ρ based on the response additive response surface (RARS) model varied from −0.309 to 5.845, indicating the interaction pattern varying with exposure concentrations of chemical mixtures. A modified RARS model (taking ρ as a function of exposure concentration) was constructed and could well predict the combined toxicity of mPS and DBP. More than 20% reduction of DBP was observed at 20 mg L⁻¹ mPS, while 1 mg L⁻¹ mPS had no significant effect on the bioavailability of DBP at different sampling time points. Volume, morphological complexity and chlorophyll fluorescence intensity of microalgal cells were disturbed by both DBP and mPS. The antagonistic effect of high concentrations of mPS might be partially attributed to the combination of hetero- and homo-aggregation and the reduced bioavailability of DBP. The overall findings of the present study profiled the combined toxic effects of mPS and DBP on marine phytoplankton species which will be helpful for further evaluation of ecological risks of mPS and DBP in marine environment.

Being signaling molecules, nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) can mediate a wide range of physiological processes caused by plant metal toxicity. Moreover, legume-rhizobium symbiosis has gained increasing attention in mitigating heavy metal stress. However, systematic regulatory mechanisms used for the exogenous application of signaling molecules to alter the resistance of legume-rhizobium symbiosis under metal stress are currently unknown. In this study, we examined the exogenous effects of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) as an NO donor additive and sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) as a H₂S donor additive on the phytotoxicity and soil quality of alfalfa (Medicago sativa)-rhizobium symbiosis in lead/cadmium (Pb/Cd)-contaminated soils. Results showed that rhizobia inoculation markedly promoted alfalfa growth by increasing chlorophyll content, fresh weight, and plant height and biomass. Compared to the inoculated rhizobia treatment alone, the addition of NO and H₂S significantly reduced the bioaccumulation of Pb and Cd in alfalfa-rhizobium symbiosis, respectively, thus avoiding the phytotoxicity caused by the excessive presence of metals. The addition of signaling molecules also alleviated metal-induced phytotoxicity by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity and inhibiting the level of lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in legume-rhizobium symbiosis. Also, signaling molecules improved soil nutrient cycling, increased soil enzyme activities, and promoted rhizosphere bacterial community diversity. Both partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) and variation partitioning analysis (VPA) identified that using signaling molecules can improve plant growth by regulating major controlling variables (i.e., soil enzymes, soil nutrients, and microbial diversity/plant oxidative damage) in legume-rhizobium symbiosis. This study offers integrated insight that confirms that the exogenous application of signaling molecules can enhance the resistance of legume-rhizobium symbiosis under metal toxicity by regulating the biochemical response of the plant-soil system, thereby minimizing potential health risks.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an emerging organic pollutant, widely distributed in environment. Plants can uptake and metabolize BPA, but BPA accumulation induces phytotoxicity. In this study, we administered dopamine, a kind of catecholamines with strong antioxidative potential, to unveil its role in cucumber tolerance to BPA stress. The results showed that exposure to BPA (20 mg L⁻¹) for 21 days significantly reduced growth and biomass accumulation in cucumber seedlings as revealed by decreased lengths and dry weights of shoots and roots. While BPA exposure decreased the chlorophyll content, cell viability and root activity, it remarkably increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, suggesting that BPA induced oxidative stress in cucumber. However, exogenous dopamine application significantly improved the photosynthetic pigment content, root cell viability, growth and biomass accumulation, and decreased the ROS and MDA levels by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes under BPA stress. Further analysis revealed that dopamine application significantly increased the glutathione content and the transcripts and activity of glutathione S-transferase under co-administration of dopamine and BPA compared with only BPA treatment. Moreover, dopamine decreased the BPA content in both leaves and roots, suggesting that dopamine promoted BPA metabolism by enhancing the glutathione-dependent detoxification. Our results show that dopamine has a positive role against BPA phytotoxicity and it may reduce the risks-associated with the dietary intake of BPA through consumption of vegetables.

Concentrations as high as thousands of milligrams per kilogram (dry weight) of nonylphenol (NP), an endocrine-disrupting chemical of great concern, have been reported in soil. Soil is considered one of the primary pathways for exposure of crop plants to NP. However, there have been few studies on the toxicity of soil NP to crop plants, especially with comprehensive consideration of the application of organic fertiliser which is a common agricultural practice. In this study, tomato plants were grown in soils treated with NP in the presence and/or absence of earthworm casts (EWCs). After four weeks, we tested the physiological and biochemical responses (accumulative levels of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and superoxide anion radicals (O₂-·), total chlorophyll content, degree of membrane lipid peroxidation, activities of defence-related enzymes, and level of DNA damage) and the changes in plant growth (elongation and biomass). The growth inhibition, reactive oxygen species (H₂O₂ and O₂-·) accumulation, decrease in chlorophyll content, increase in activity of defence-related enzymes (including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase and glutathione reductase), enhancement of membrane lipid peroxidation, and DNA damage in NP-treated seedlings were clearly reversed by the intervention of EWCs. In particular, the suppressed elongation, biomass, and chlorophyll content in tomato plants exposed to NP alone were significantly restored by EWCs to even greater levels than those of the undisturbed control. In other words, EWCs could efficiently invigorate the photosynthesis of crops via up-regulating the chlorophyll content, thereby overwhelming the NP stress on plant growth. Accordingly, except for reducing the bioavailability of soil NP as reported in our previous study, EWCs could also help crop plants to cope with NP stress by strengthening their stress resistance ability. Our findings are of practical significance for the formulation of strategies to relieve the negative effects of soil NP on crop growth.

Natural organic matter (NOM) affects the environmental behaviors of AgNPs, which may change their phytotoxicity to plants. However, more evidence can be provided to illustrate how NOM influences AgNPs-induced phytotoxicity. In this study, using rice (Oryza sativa) as a model, the effects of NOM, Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) and fulvic acid (FA), on the dissolution and phytotoxicity of AgNPs were investigated. Silver ions decreased in both AgNPs and AgNO₃ solution in the presence of NOM, and the effect of SRHA was stronger than FA. Image-XRF (iXRF) results showed that Ag mainly remained in the root rather than the shoot of rice seedling exposed to AgNPs. NOM mitigated the negative effects of AgNPs and AgNO₃ on rice with lower germination inhibition rate, less chlorophyll reduction, more relative biomass and less O₂•⁻ content. Moreover, NOM improved root cell viability according to FDA fluorescent dye as well as maintained the normal root morphology. Interestingly, the neutral sugars content from pectin, hemicellulose 1, hemicellulose 2 and cellulose of root cell wall in AgNPs and AgNO₃ treatments differed from the control, while it was close to the regular content in AgNPs/AgNO₃+SRHA/FA groups, which implied that NOM regulated the changes. Besides, SRHA led to less germination and less relative biomass than FA due to different chemical characters. Thus, NOM needs to be considered when studying the phytotoxicity of AgNPs.
