Microplastic pollution in estuarine and coastal environments has recently been characterised in several countries but few researchers have addressed the influence of different forms of coastal zone use on the distribution of microplastic. Here, microplastic particles were sampled in Hangzhou Bay, which is heavily influenced by a range of human activities, and their abundance, size, and polymer type characterised. The abundance of microplastics was 0.14 ± 0.12 items/m³ in water, 84.3 ± 56.6 items/kg dry weight of sediment, and between 0.25 ± 0.14 and 1.4 ± 0.37 items/individual in biota. These results show that Hangzhou Bay has a low level of microplastic contamination compared to other coastal systems in China, although abundance was spatially variable within the bay; relatively higher microplastic abundances were found in the southern area of the bay, which has adjacent industrial and urban land-use zones, while lower abundances were observed in the central and northern bay areas where mariculture, fisheries, and mineral and energy industries are most common. The relatively low microplastic abundance observed in the biota samples is consistent with the generally low values for the seawater and sediment samples. Pellets were the most common of four particle-shape classes (fibres, fragments, films, and pellets) in surface seawater, while fibres were most abundant in sediment and biota. Smaller-sized microplastics (<1.0 mm) were dominant in all samples. Microplastics in the surface seawater were dominated by low-density polypropylene and polyethylene particles, while rayon was dominant in the sediment and biota samples. Our results demonstrate that regional variability in anthropogenic activity and land-use are important controls on the spatial pattern of microplastic pollution in Hangzhou Bay.

Nutrient loading is a major threat to estuaries and coastal environments worldwide, therefore, it is critical that we have good monitoring tools to detect early signs of degradation in these ecologically important and vulnerable ecosystems. Traditionally, bottom-dwelling macroinvertebrates have been used for ecological health assessment but recent advances in environmental genomics mean we can now characterize less visible forms of biodiversity, offering a more holistic view of the ecosystem and potentially providing early warning signals of disturbance. We carried out a manipulative nutrient enrichment experiment (0, 150 and 600 g N fertilizer m⁻²) in two estuaries in New Zealand to assess the effects of nutrient loading on benthic communities. After seven months of enrichment, environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding was used to examine the response of eukaryotic (18S rRNA), diatom only (rbcL) and bacterial (16S rRNA) communities. Multivariate analyses demonstrated changes in eukaryotic, diatom and bacterial communities in response to nutrient enrichment at both sites, despite differing environmental conditions. These patterns aligned with changes in macrofaunal communities identified using traditional morphological techniques, confirming concordance between disturbance indicators detected by eDNA and current monitoring approaches. Clear shifts in eukaryotic and bacterial indicator taxa were seen in response to nutrient loading while changes in diatom only communities were more subtle. Community changes were discernible between 0 and 150 g N m⁻² treatments, suggesting that estuary health assessment tools could be developed to detect early signs of degradation. Increasing variation in community structure associated with nutrient loading could also be used as an indicator of stress or approaching tipping points. This work represents a first step towards the development of molecular-based estuary monitoring tools, which could provide a more holistic and standardized approach to ecosystem health assessment with faster turn-around times and lower costs.

2020
Stocker, Clayton W. | Haddy, James | Lyle, Jeremy | Nowak, Barbara F.
Tasmanian recreational fishers have reported the presence of dark pigmentations in the usually white fillets of southern sand flathead (Platycephalus bassensis), a phenomenon known as muscle melanisation. Based on histology, it is suggested that eumelanin and pheomelanin are involved in the occurrence of the phenomenon. A gross melanisation scoring system was validated through a comparison with an image analysis technique, that quantified the percentage surface area of the fillets affected by muscle melanisation. The occurrence of muscle melanisation was most severe in fish inhabiting Deceitful Cove, Tamar Estuary. This indicated that muscle melanisation in P. bassensis may be caused by yet to be identified site specific factors. No significant relationships were evident between the percentage surface area of melanised muscle with condition index, age, sex, maturation stage, fish weight, fish length and size of melano-macrophage centres in the liver or spleen. Overall, this study has provided critical information that will frame the direction and focus of future P. bassensis muscle melanisation research.

2020

Metal contamination in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) is persistent-, yet a comprehensive understanding of distribution and behavior of metals in surface water of this large, multi-source estuary is still lacking. In the present study, water samples from 24 sites spanning the whole estuary during the dry and wet season were collected and fractioned. Trace metal concentrations in samples were then determined following a preconcentration technique using Nobias Chelate-PA1 resin. Distribution of trace metals exhibited variability along and across estuary, as a result of estuarine mixing, external metal loadings, addition and removal. Behavior of metals was contrasting between the dry and wet seasons, exhibiting metal-specific intercorrelations and dynamics. Colloidal metals (Mn, Ni and Cd) were primarily present in upper estuary and areas affected by external contaminant loading. Colloidal Cu was the only metal that was ubiquitous in the estuary in both seasons. It showed a high affinity for small-size organic colloids (likely fulvic acid) during the dry season. Overall, the present study demonstrated the multi-source character of the PRE and that the behavior of trace metals was controlled by the coupling of hydrologic and geochemical processes, with anthropogenic perturbations.

2020
With the technological advances and economic development, the multiplicity and wide variety of applications of electrical and electronic equipment have increased, as well as the amount of end-of-life products (waste of electrical and electronic equipment, WEEE). Accompanying their increasing application, there is an increasing risk to aquatic ecosystems and inhabiting organisms. Among the most common elements present in WEEE are rare earth elements (REE) such as Dysprosium (Dy). The present study evaluated the metabolic and oxidative stress responses of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to an increasing range of Dy concentrations, after a 28 days experimental period. The results obtained highlighted that Dy was responsible for mussel’s metabolic increase associated with glycogen expenditure, activation of antioxidant and biotransformation defences and cellular damage, with a clear loss of redox balance. Such effects may greatly impact mussel’s physiological functions, including reproduction capacity and growth, with implications for population conservation. Overall the present study pointed out the need for more research on the toxic impacts resulting from these emerging pollutants, especially towards marine and estuarine invertebrate species.

Because oil spills frequently occur in coastal regions that serve as spawning habitat, characterizing the effects of oil in estuarine fish carries both economic and environmental importance. There is a breadth of research investigating the effects of crude oil on fish, however few studies have addressed how transcriptional responses to oil change throughout development or how these responses might be conserved across taxa. To investigate these effects, we performed RNA-seq and pathway analysis following oil exposure 1) in a single estuarine species (Cyprinodon variegatus) at three developmental time points (embryos, yolk-sack larvae, free-feeding larvae), and 2) in two ecologically similar species (C. variegatus and Fundulus grandis), immediately post-hatch (yolk-sack stage). Our results indicate that C. variegatus embryos mount a diminished transcriptional response to oil compared to later stages, and that few transcriptional responses are conserved throughout development. Pathway analysis of larval C. variegatus revealed dysregulation of similar biological processes at later larval stages, including alteration of cholesterol biosynthesis pathways, cardiac development processes, and immune functions. Our cross-species comparison showed that F. grandis exhibited a reduced transcriptional response compared to C. variegatus. Pathway analysis revealed that the two species shared similar immune and cardiac responses, however pathways related to cholesterol biosynthesis exhibited a divergent response as they were activated in C. variegatus but inhibited in F. grandis. Our results suggest that examination of larval stages may provide a more sensitive estimate of oil-impacts than examination of embryos, and challenge assumptions that ecologically comparable species respond to oil similarly.

We conducted the first comprehensive assessment of the presence, source, and ecotoxicological implication of 13 banned and restricted organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the surface water along the Ganga River for two different seasons. Surface water samples were collected along the 2525 km stretch of the Ganga through 43 sites representing five zones of diverse land-use pattern, pesticide consumption rate, and varied flow. The mean concentrations of ΣOCPs were significantly higher (∼2–5 times) in the post-monsoon or wet season [range: 0.126 to 10.402 μg/L (mean: 2.482 μg/L ± 3.589 and median: 1.433)] than in the post-winter or dry season [range: 0.053 to 3.010 μg/L (mean: 0.765 μg/L±1.033 and median: 0.399)]. Lindane (γ-HCH) was the dominant and most frequently detected pesticide at all the sites, indicating possible continued use of this banned pesticide in agricultural practices. The spatial distribution of OCPs revealed non-significant difference amongst different zones and indicate that point source pollution from the open drains along the Ganga could be responsible for observed trend. Ratio diagnostic analysis highlighted the fresh inputs and potential illegal use of lindane and chlordane at all the zones whereas, historical use of DDT was revealed at the majority of sites. Interestingly, fresh inputs of DDT were observed in the relatively pristine high altitude Upper zone (UZ) suggesting long-range atmospheric transfer and its continued use in the zone. Risk quotient (RQ) analysis revealed high ecotoxicological risks (>1), at all the studied sites for p, p’ DDE. The lower zone (LZ) emerged as a high ecological risk zone. The study highlights that though the OCPs analysed in this study are banned/restricted in India, still the implementation of the ban is poor and delayed and the country requires stricter adherence to its National Implementation Plan (NIP) on pesticides.

Destructive development of suburban areas in some metropolises has exposed suburban soils to high risk of potentially toxic trace elements (PTEs) enrichment, which also threatens human and ecosystem health. This study investigated the pollution status, sources and spatial patterns of four PTEs (Pb, Cd, Cr and As) in 1805 soil samples collected from the suburbs of Shanghai in 2015. Nineteen potential sources, including: 6 soil property factors, 10 proximity factors and 3 topography factors, were selected to help explain the PTEs aggregation using logistic regression models from global and local perspectives. The statistical results of PTEs concentration revealed that Cd showed the highest pollution risk in local soils, which was followed by As. Soil property was the primary factor affecting the PTEs (except Cr) enrichment, both identified by global models and local models. The local model particularly emphasized the significant correlation between soil property and PTEs in most parts of the outer suburbs and southeastern inner suburbs. Some proximity factors such as distance to district center and water were negatively correlated with Cd pollution and some topography factors such as elevation and slope were closely related to As pollution. It is worth noting that in the coastal areas, especially Chongming Island, there were obvious PTEs depositions in the soil near the estuary. This study helps to identify the sources of anthropogenic contamination and geogenic enrichment of the four PTEs and their spatial patterns, playing an essential role in formulating regional environmental policies for coastal cities.

Hypoxia off the Changjiang Estuary (CE) and its adjacent waters is purported to be the most severe in China, attracting considerable concern from both the scientific community and the general public. Currently, continuous observations of dissolved oxygen (DO) levels covering hypoxia from its appearance to disappearance are lacking. In this study, twelve consecutive monthly cruises (from February 2015 to January 2016) were conducted. The consecutive spatiotemporal variations in hypoxia throughout the annual cycle were elucidated in detail, and the responses of annual variations in hypoxia to the different influential factors were explored. Overall, hypoxia experienced a consecutive process of expanding from south to north, then disappearing from north to south. The annual variations in hypoxia were mainly contingent on stratification variations. Among different stages, there was significant heterogeneity in the dominant factors. Specifically, low-DO waters initially appeared from the intrusion of nearshore Kuroshio branch current (NKBC), as NKBC intrusion provided a low-DO background and triggered stratification. Thereafter, stratification was enhanced and gradually expanded northward, which promoted the extension of low-DO areas. The formation of hypoxia was regionally selective, and more intense organic matter decomposition at local regions facilitated the occurrence and discontinuous distribution of hypoxia. Hypoxic zones were observed at the Changjiang bank and Zhejiang coastal region from August (most extensively at 14,800 km²) to October. Thereafter, increased vertical mixing facilitated the dissipation of hypoxia from north to south.

Estuaries are often considered to be the filters of pollutants from the land-derived outflows of freshwater to open seawater. Oysters are efficient bioaccumulators of metals in the estuarine environment, however, little information is available on the long-term tissue variability of metals in a large dynamic estuary under complex urbanized and anthropogenic impacts. Thus, an eight-year biomonitoring study of metals (Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the oysters from 10 sites were carried out to reveal the highly spatial-temporal variations in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) of China during 2011–2018. Cd, Cu, and Zn in oysters were significantly correlated with the dissolved metals in seawater. Geographically, Ag, Cd, and Cr were higher in the western sites, and Cu, Ni, and Zn were higher in the eastern sites. High seasonal variations of Ag, Cu, and Zn were found in the wet season. The calculated annual change rates (vc) of Cd, Cu, Zn, Ag, Pb, Ni, and Cr in the oysters were −1.1, −45, −48, 0.338, −0.216, −2.2, and −2.8 μg/g/y, respectively. If such decreasing rates of vc (or natural logarithm rates v) were maintained, Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni in oysters from PRE would be expected to recover to the national 50% concentrations in years 2022 (2024), 2045 (2079), 2073 (2110), 2021 (2023), and 2019 (2020), respectively. Long-term series observations of metals in organisms reflected the real bioavailability of metals, pollution status, and trends for environmental management and control in a large dynamic and contaminated estuary.
