Phytoplankton groups as indicators of eutrophication in the Boka Kotorska bay [Adriatic sea, Montenegro (Yugoslavia)]
2001
Vuksanovic, N. (Institut za biologiju mora, Kotor (Yugoslavia))
During complex studies of phytoplankton, the role of particular phytoplankton groups was examined, as one of important indicators of eutrophic processes in the Bay of Boka Kotorska (Adriatic sea, Montenegro (Yugoslavia)). Throughout summer 1999, investigations have been performed at representative locations (Kotor, Tivat and Hercegnovi bays) at the depths of 0, 5, 10 and 20 m. Maximal values of microphytoplankton were found in Kotor Bay in July (2.1 x 10**6 cells/cubic dm). In Tivat Bay, maximal values of microphytoplankton were found in June, although they were ten times lower (2.4 x 10**5 cells/cubic dm). In the Bay of Hercegnovi, mean values were lower, while maximal quantity of microphytoplankton was found in August (2.6 x 10**3 cells/cubic dm). In the Boka Kotorska Bay, the maximal percentage of 95% of the group Bacillariophyceae was found in the most productive surface layers at the depths of 0 and 5 m. The impact of eutrophication was the most visible in the Kotor Bay. It decreased towards the open sea. Diatoms populations (Bacillariophyceae) were dominant in the Bay, while the participations of other groups is insignificant. Consequently, it means that Bacillariophyceae are the most adapted group to the eutrophic conditions of the Boka Kotorska Bay.

2001
Stojanovic, S. | Popovic, M. | Nikolic, Lj. | Malencic, Dj. (Poljoprivredni fakultet, Novi Sad (Yugoslavia))
The lake Provala near Vajska (Serbia, Yugoslavia) was created by the embankment performation during high Danube river levels in 1924. It is a very important water ecosystem of natural origin, which is a fact of great importance for exact biological and ecological research. Miljanovic (1996) and Pujin (1997) present the first lake Provala water state data. They emphasise the reinforced eutrophication process in the shore region. This paper presents the review of the macrophytes vegetation of the lake Provala recent state for the first time, with special attention to dominant plant species. Based on the present taxons analysis, as well as water chemical parameters analysed (NH4(+), NO3(-), NO2(-), PO4(3-), HPK, BPK, pH), it can be concluded that the eutrophication process is present in this water micro-reservoir. It is especially true for the shore region and shallow waters, where the process is already well under way and very fast. These research results can be used to efficiently protect this natural water ecosystem.

A 2-yr (1997–1998) survey aiming at the establishment of national data bases concerning the quality of surface waters has been conducted in the major river systems of Macedonia, N. Greece. This paper presents the physicochemical parameters(pH, conductivity, total suspended solids, temperature and DO),the organic pollution parameters (BOD₅, COD) and the major N and P species (NO₃ ⁻, NO₂ ⁻,NH₄ ⁺,organic N, orthophosphates and total P) determined at 25 sampling sites located on main rivers, tributaries, streams andditches that drain the major rural, agricultural, urban and industrial areas of N. Greece. Use of multivariate statistics is also made to identify the principal factors which influencethe chemistry of the water in individual river systems. The eutrophication status of the examined systems was evaluatedby means of N/P ratios. Mean N/P ratios showed large variationsamong sampling sites ranging from potential N- to P-limitationconditions. N/P ratios at particular sampling sites showed also great temporal variability thus suggesting temporary states of N- or P- limitation. Most frequently, highest ratio values wereobserved during winter and early spring. Comparisons are made between data from this study region and literature on rivers elsewhere.
