In Mirzapur (U.P.), a power-starved district, the UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) technique was adopted. Almost all of the available technologies do not treat heavy metals, so, is the case with the UASB also. The present study is to assess how much heavy metal can get accumulated in plant tissues in different species. The result of the present study was that the concentration of Pb(1106.31)>Zn(221.45)>Cd(49.26)>Hg(23.37) mg/Kg in the sludge while the concentration of Zn(93.35)>Pb(52.00)>Hg(16.93)>Cd(1.53) mg/Kg in the soil. When the sludge was mixed with the soil the trend got changed and the trend was Pb(596.36)>Zn(219.86)>Cd(24.70)>Hg(22.63) mg/Kg. Three different species that were chosen for the study were Basella Alba (Spinach), Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) & Brassica Juncea (Mustard). The trend of accumulation of studied heavy metals in the Brassica Juncea (Mustard) was Zn(85.33)>Pb(25.88)>Hg(11.23)>Cd(0.99) mg/Kg. In Solanum lycopersicum (Tomato) the trend was Pb(231.11)>Zn(108.72)>Hg(12.43)>Cd(9.41) mg/Kg  and in Basella alba (Spinach) was Zn(103.81)>Pb(83.90)>Hg(10.78)>Cd(4.18) mg/Kg. Overall the study reveals that the accumulation of heavy metals takes place in plants grown in soil mixed with sewage sludge. The reduction in the concentration of Pb, Cd, Hg and Zn in sludge mixed with soil after the harvesting of plant in case of Solanum lycopersicum were 39.38%, 47.93%, 6.18% and 49.89% respectively; while in case of Basella alba these were 25.23%, 57.53%, 71.58% and 49.16% respectively; and in case of Brassica Juncea these reduction were 25.86%, 60.80%, 70.96% and 49.04% respectively.

peer reviewed | Soil-borne diseases have become increasingly problematic for farmers producing crops intensively under protected agriculture. Although soil fumigants are convenient and effective for minimizing the impact of soil-borne disease, they are most often detrimental to beneficial soil microorganisms. Previous research showed that bio-activation of soil using biological control agents present in biofertilizers or organic fertilizers offered promise as a strategy for controlling soil-borne pathogens when the soil was bio-activated after fumigation. Our research sought to determine how bio-activation can selectively inhibit pathogens while promoting the recovery of beneficial microbes. We monitored changes in the soil's physicochemical properties, its microbial community and reductions in soil-borne pathogens. We found that the population density of Fusarium and Phytophthora were significantly reduced and tomato yield was significantly increased when the soil was bio-activated. Soil pH and soil catalase activity were significantly increased, and the soil's microbial community structure was changed, which may have enhanced the soil's ability to reduce Fusarium and Phytophthora. Our results showed that soil microbial diversity and relative abundance of beneficial microorganisms (such as Sphingomonas, Bacillus, Mortierella and Trichoderma) increased shortly after bio-activation of the soil, and were significantly and positively correlated with pathogen suppression. The reduction in pathogens may have been due to a combination of fumigation-fertilizer that reduced pathogens directly, or the indirect effect of an optimized soil microbiome that improved the soil's non-biological factors (such as soil pH, fertility structure), enhanced the soil's functional properties and increased tomato yield.

Arsenic (As) in rice is posing a serious threat worldwide and consumption of As contaminated rice by human is causing health risks. A pot experiment with different levels of sulfate dosage (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mg/kg) was set up in this study to explore the influence of sulfate fertilizer on rice plant growth, yield, and As accumulation in rice grain. Apart from As bioaccumulation in rice grains, the As fraction of cooked rice was quantified, and the health risks associated with cooked rice consumption were also investigated. The sulfate application significantly (p ≤ 0.05) enhanced the chlorophyll, tiller number, grains per panicle, grain and biomass yield under As stressed condition. The sulfate application also reduced the oxidative stress and antioxidant activity in rice plants. Sulfate fertigation improved the accumulation of total sulfur (S) and reduced the uptake and translocation of As in rice plants. Arsenic concentration in rice grain was reduced by 50.1% in S80 treatment (80 mg of sulfate/kg of soil) as compared to S0 set. The reduction percentage of As in cooked parboiled and sunned rice with correspond to raw rice ranged from 55.9 to 74% and 40.3–60.7%, respectively. However, the sulfate application and cooking of parboiled rice reduced the potential non-cancer and cancer risk as compared to sunned rice. The S80 treatment and cooking of parboiled rice reduce the As exposure for both children and adults by 51% as compared to cooked sunned rice under S80 treatment and this trend was similar for all treatments. Therefore, sulfate application in soil can be recommended to produce safer rice grains and subsequent cooking of parboiled rice grain with low-As contaminated water need to be done to avoid any potential health risk in As endemic areas.

The high antibiotic resistance gene (ARGs) contents in livestock manure pose a potential risk to environment and human health. The heap composting with an ambient temperature and thermophilic composting are two methods for converting livestock manure into fertilizer. This study investigated the variations in ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and revealed potential mechanisms for ARGs removal using the two composting methods. The ARGs abundance were enriched by 44-fold in heap composting, among them, the macrolide-resistance genes increased significantly. On the contrary, the ARGs were removed by 92% in thermophilic composting, among them, tetracycline-resistance genes decreased by 97%. The bacterial hosts of ARGs were associated with the variations of ARGs and MGEs. The tetO was correlated with the most diverse bacteria in heap composting, and Bacteroidetes was the major host bacteria. While tetT was correlated with the most diverse bacteria in thermophilic composting, and Proteobacteria was the major host bacteria. Structural equation models showed that the enrichment of ARGs in heap composting was mainly correlated with bacterial communities, whereas, the removal of ARGs in thermophilic composting was directly affect by MGEs. Composting temperature directly affected the variations in ARGs. Higher and lower temperatures significantly decreased and increased, respectively, ARGs and MGEs abundance levels.

Excessive enrichment of fluoride threatens ecological stability and human health. The high-fluoride groundwater in the Chagan Lake area has existed for a long time. With the land consolidation and irrigation area construction, the distribution and migration process of fluoride have changed. It is urgent to explore the evolution of fluoride under the dual effects of nature and human. Based on 107 groundwater samples collected in different land use periods, hydrogeochemistry and isotope methods were combined to explore the evolution characteristics and hydrogeochemical processes of fluoride in typical high-fluoride background area and elucidate the impact of anthropogenic activities on fluoride migration. The results indicate that large areas of paddy fields are developed from saline-alkali land, and its area has increased by nearly 30%. The proportion of high-fluoride groundwater (>2 mg/L) has increased by nearly 10%, mainly distributed in the new irrigation area. Hydrogeochemical processes such as dissolution of fluorine-containing minerals, precipitation of carbonate minerals and exchange of Na⁺, Ca²⁺ on the water-soil interface control the enrichment of fluoride. The groundwater d-excess has no obvious change with the increase of TDS, and human activities are one of the reasons for the increase of fluoride. The concentration of fluoride is diluted due to years of diversion irrigation in old irrigation area, whereas the enrichment of δ²H, δ¹⁸O and Cl⁻ in new irrigation area indicates that the vertical infiltration of washing alkali and irrigation water brought fluoride and other salts to groundwater. Fertilizer and wastewater discharges also contribute to the accumulation of fluoride, manifesting as co-increasing nitrate and chloride salts. The results of this study provide a new insight into fluoride migration under anthropogenic disturbance in high-fluoride background areas.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient but may become a pollution source in the environment when the N concentration exceeds a certain threshold for humans and nature. Nitrate is a major N species in river water with notable spatial and temporal variations under the influences of natural factors and anthropogenic N inputs. We analyzed the relationship between riverine N (focusing on nitrate) concentration and various factors (land use, climate, basin topography, atmospheric N deposition, agricultural N sources and human-derived N) in 104 rivers located throughout the Japanese Archipelago except small remote islands. We aimed to better understand processes and mechanisms to explain the spatial and temporal changes in riverine nitrate concentration. A publicly available river water quality database observed in the 1980s (1980–1989) and 2000s (2000–2009) was used. This study is the first to evaluate the long-term scale of 20 years in the latter half of Japan's economic growth period at the national level. A geographic information system (GIS) was employed to determine average values of each variable collected from multiple sources of statistical data. We then performed regression analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) for each period. The forestland area influenced by the basin topography, climate (i.e., air temperature) and other land uses (i.e., farmland and urban area) played a major role in decreasing nitrate concentrations in both the 1980s and 2000s. Atmospheric N deposition (especially N oxides) and agricultural N sources (fertilizer and manure) were also significant variables regarding the spatial variations in riverine nitrate concentrations. The SEM results suggested that human-derived N (via food consumption) intensified by demographic shifts during the 2000s increased riverine nitrate concentrations over other variables within the context of spatial variation. These findings facilitate better decision making regarding land use, agricultural practices, pollution control and individual behaviors toward a sustainable society.

Mapping soil contamination enables the delineation of areas where protection measures are needed. Traditional soil sampling on a grid pattern followed by chemical analysis and geostatistical interpolation methods (GIMs), such as Kriging interpolation, can be costly, slow and not well-suited to highly heterogeneous soil environments. Here we propose a novel method to map soil contamination by combining high-resolution aerial imaging (HRAI) with machine learning algorithms. To support model establishment and validation, 1068 soil samples were collected from an arsenic (As) contaminated area in Zhongxiang, Hubei province, China. The average arsenic concentration was 39.88 mg/kg (SD = 213.70 mg/kg), with individual sample points determined as low risk (66.9%), medium risk (29.4%), or high risk (3.7%), respectively. Then, identified features were extracted from a HRAI image of the study area. Four machine learning algorithms were developed to predict As risk levels, including (i) support vector machine (SVM), (ii) multi-layer perceptron (MLP), (iii) random forest (RF), and (iii) extreme random forest (ERF). Among these, we found that the ERF algorithm performed best overall and that its prediction performance was generally better than that of traditional Kriging interpolation. The accuracy of ERF in test area 1 reached 0.87, performing better than RF (0.81), MLP (0.78) and SVM (0.77). The F1-score of ERF for discerning high-risk points in test area 1 was as high as 0.8. The complexity of the distribution of points with different risk levels was a decisive factor in model prediction ability. Identified features in the study area associated with fertilizer factories had the most important contribution to the ERF model. This study demonstrates that HRAI combined with machine learning has good potential to predict As soil risk levels.

Macro (BC), colloidal (CBC) and nanobiochar (NBC) were examined for the particle size effect for adsorptive removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) and co-occurring nutrients, which are present in synthetic hydrolyzed human urine. The surface morphologies and functionality of biochars were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) Spectroscopy. Experiments for the removal of OTC were performed at the natural pH (pH 9.0) of hydrolyzed human urine using solid-solutions of 3 types of chars (1 g/L) with a contact time of 5 h, at initial OTC concentration of 50 mg/L where isotherm experiments were investigated with OTC concentrations from 25 to 1000 mg/L. The highest maximum adsorption capacity of 136.7 mg/g was reported for CBC, while BC reported slightly low value (129.34 mg/g). Interestingly, NBC demonstrated a two-step adsorption process with two adsorption capacities (16.9 and 113.2 mg/g). Colloidal biochar depicted the highest adsorption for NH₄⁺, PO₄³⁻, and SO₄²⁻ nutrients. All 3 types of chars showed strong retention with a poor desorption (6% in average) of OTC in synthetic hydrolyzed urine medium. CBC and NBC demonstrated both physisorption and chemisorption, whereas the OTC removal by BC was solely via physisorption. Nevertheless, CBC biochar demonstrated the best performance in adsorptive removal of OTC and nutrients in hydrolyzed human urine and its capability towards wastewater treatment. As the removal of nutrients were low, the treated urine can possibly be used as a safe fertilizer.

It is likely that pollution from chemical facilities will affect the health of any exposed population; however, the majority of scientific evidence available has focused on occupational exposure rather than environmental. Consequently, this study assessed whether there could have been an excess of cancer-related mortality associated with environmental exposure to pollution from chemical installations – for populations residing in municipalities in the vicinity of chemical industries. To this end, we designed an ecological study which assessed municipal mortality due to 32 types of cancer in the period from 1999 to 2008. The exposure to pollution was estimated using distance from the facilities to the centroid of the municipality as a proxy for exposure. In order to assess any increased cancer mortality risk in municipalities potentially exposed to chemical facilities pollution (situated at a distance of ≤5 km from a chemical installation), we employed Bayesian Hierarchical Poisson Regression Models. This included two Bayesian inference methods: Integrated Nested Laplace Approximations (INLA) and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC, for validation). The reference category consisted of municipalities beyond the 5 km limit. We found higher mortality risk (relative risk, RR; estimated by INLA, 95% credible interval, 95%CrI) for both sexes for colorectal (RR, 1.09; 95%CrI, 1.05–1.15), gallbladder (1.14; 1.03–1.27), and ovarian cancers (1.10; 1.02–1.20) associated with organic chemical installations. Notably, pleural cancer (2.27; 1.49–3.41) in both sexes was related to fertilizer facilities. Associations were found for women, specifically for ovarian (1.11; 1.01–1.22) and breast cancers (1.06; 1.00–1.13) in the proximity of explosives/pyrotechnics installations; increased breast cancer mortality risk (1.10; 1.03–1.18) was associated with proximity to inorganic chemical installations. The results suggest that environmental exposure to pollutants from some types of chemical facilities may be associated with increased mortality from several different types of cancer.
