peer reviewed | Swordfish (Xiphias gladius L., 1758) is an apex predator, highly migratory meso-pelagic fish widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean. As top predators, this fish may be the end reservoir of the bioaccumulation of trace elements in a food chain because they occupy higher trophic levels and are an important food source, causing them to be potentially hazardous to consume. This study aims to investigate the concentration of 18 trace elements of Swordfish, caught in the Mediterranean Sea and to discuss human exposure risks. The mean element levels in the fish muscles were clearly below the maximum allowable concentrations established by International food safety regulations. The data suggested that the risk is minor and acceptable for human health. The findings of this study amplify the scarce database on contaminants available, especially new data on “emerging elements”, for this species from the Mediterranean Sea. | Transpolmed Et Post Doc de Michel Marengo

International audience | Studies integrating trophic ecology, physiological condition and accumulation of heavy metals in top predators, such as swordfish, are needed to better understand the links between them and the risk to humans associated with consumption of these fish. This research focuses on the swordfish of the Catalan Sea and follows a multi method approach that considers their diet, their liver lipid content, and mercury accumulation in their bodies as well as in their prey. The aim is to highlight the links between trophic ecology, physiology (fish condition), and ecotoxicology. Results indicate that poor condition of swordfish based on size and the levels of lipid in the liver, and the high Hg levels accumulated to the trophic web (particularly from cephalopods) may indicate potential unfavourable feeding and reproduction conditions for swordfish in the NW Mediterranean and that this warrants further investigation.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution in Tangxun Lake, the largest urban lake in China, was investigated. The average MPs pollution in sediment (1.81 ± 1.75 × 10⁴ items kg⁻¹) is at a high level, while the MPs in lakeshore water (917.77 ± 742.17 items m⁻³) is in the middle to low level compared with existing studies, which is related to the government's protection. Fragments and fibers are the most common shapes in sediment and water, respectively. MPs size <1 mm dominates in the sediment, while the MPs in water has a larger size. The distribution of MPs in the inner lake shows that pellets tend to “hidden” in sediments. Suspected MPs are randomly selected for polymer detection by Micro-Raman microscopy. Polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are the most common polymer types in water, sediment and atmospheric deposition MPs samples. The input of wastewater, fishery and surrounding human activities are the main sources of MPs in sediment. Atmospheric deposition has a great impact on the distribution of MPs, while the contribution of surface runoff to lake MPs is not remarkable. In addition, MPs in sediments have exceeded the environmental carrying capacity. More attention should be focused on the sediment, where huge amounts of MPs are “hidden”.

Litter is an ecological, economic, and social problem that impacts marine environments around the world. To create prevention and mitigation measures to solve this issue, it is necessary to understand the amounts and sources of this type of pollution. Cassino Beach is an extensive sandy beach located in South Brazil (∼220 km in length) that presents multiple uses, such as touristic, portuary and fishery activities. In order to evaluate the spatial and seasonal variation of litter amounts, types and sources at Cassino Beach, litter (>2.5 cm) was collected over 27 months at two urban and two non-urban sites. At each site, the litter present in three 200 m² areas was sampled and evaluated. A total of 19,457 items were collected, mostly composed by plastic (∼88%). Paper, metal, and cloth items were also present, but in low amounts. Fragments and cigarette butts were the major types of plastic litter, with abundances of 28.4% and 17.0%, respectively. Urban sites presented higher amounts of litter, with those related to beach use being more common, emphasizing the contribution of beachgoers to litter input at these sites. During the summer season, when beach use increases, the highest total litter concentration was found. Undefined and/or beach use-related sources were dominant in all sites and seasons. Mapping the predominant materials, types and potential sources of litter creates important baseline data that can contribute not only to beach monitoring, but also to the development of litter reduction strategies.

The little information available on fuel consumption and emissions by high seas tuna fisheries indicates that the global tuna fleet may have consumed about 2.5 Mt of fuel in 2009, resulting in the production of about 9 Mt of CO₂-equivalent greenhouse gases (GHGs), i.e., about 4.5–5% of the global fishing fleet emissions. We developed a model of annual fuel consumption for the large-scale purse seiners operating in the western Indian Ocean as a function of fishing effort, strategy, and vessel characteristics based on an original and unique data set of more than 4300 bunkering operations that spanned the period 2013–2019. We used the model to estimate the total fuel consumption and associated GHG and SO₂ emissions of the Indian Ocean purse seine fishery between 1981 and 2019. Our results showed that the energetic performance of this fishery was characterized by strong interannual variability over the last four decades. This resulted from a combination of variations in tuna abundance but also changes in catchability and fishing strategy. In recent years, the increased targeting of schools associated with fish aggregating devices in response to market incentives combined with the IOTC management measure implemented to rebuild the stock of yellowfin tuna has strongly modified the productivity and spatio-temporal patterns of purse seine fishing. This had effects on fuel consumption and air pollutant emissions. Over the period 2015 to 2019, the purse seine fishery, including its support vessel component, annually consumed about 160,000 t of fuel and emitted 590,000 t of CO2-eq GHG. Furthermore, our results showed that air pollutant emissions can be significantly reduced when limits in fuel composition are imposed. In 2015, SO₂ air pollution exceeded 1500 t, but successive implementation of sulphur limits in the Indian Ocean purse seine fishery in 2016 and 2018 have almost eliminated this pollution. Our findings highlight the need for a routine monitoring of fuel consumption with standardized methods to better assess the determinants of fuel consumption in fisheries and the air pollutants they emit in the atmosphere.

Plastics are globally distributed in oceans and can pose a threat to the environment and organisms. In this study, plastic pollution in surface water and sediments of the Bohai Sea was assessed based on plastic abundance, distribution and characteristics (shape, polymer, size and color). Water and sediment samples were collected across the sea using a plankton net (330 μm) and a grab sampler, respectively. The following conclusions were reached. 1) In surface water, large plastics were less abundant (0.14 items/m³) and showed less diverse characteristics than microplastics (0.79 items/m³) but did not significantly differ in spatial distribution. 2) Microplastics in water were more abundant (1.95 items/m³) with more diverse characteristics in Liaodong Bay than in other regions of the sea (0.26–0.59 items/m³). Plastic waste from highly concentrated agricultural, industrial and fishery activities could make large contributions to microplastics in Liaodong Bay. Additionally, low hydrodynamics and long distance to Bohai Strait are unfavorable for diffusion of particles, facilitating the retention of microplastics and increasing the abundance in this bay. 3) Microplastics in sediments were smaller in terms of dominant sizes (<0.5 mm) with less diverse characteristics than particles in water (0.5–1.5 mm). Specifically, fragments, foams and lines dominated among the microplastics in water, whereas fibers and fragments were dominant particles in sediments; alkyd resin, polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene (PP) predominated among the particles in water, but rayon, cellulose and PP were dominant particles in sediments. 4) Neither abundance nor size of microplastics in the two media was proportionally correlated and showed low similarity indexes of polymer (0.16), shape (0.29) or color (0.38). This could be related to mismatch in spatiotemporal distributions and variations in the characteristics, fate and behavior of microplastics in the two media. The findings provide knowledge for tracing the sources of plastics in the Bohai Sea.

The presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in coastal waters has caused concern over the past decade. Sulfadiazine (SD) is a very common antibiotic widely used as human and fishery medicine, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a significant role in the indirect photodegradation of SD; however, the influence of DOM compositions on SD indirect photodegradation is poorly understood. The roles of reactive intermediates (RIs) in the indirect photolysis of SD were assessed in this study. The reactive triplet states of DOM (³DOM∗) played a major role, whereas HO· and ¹O₂ played insignificant roles. DOM was divided into four components using excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis. The components included three allochthonous humic-like components and one autochthonous humic-like component. The allochthonous humic-like components contributed more to RIs generation and SD indirect photolysis than the autochthonous humic-like component. A significant relationship between the indirect photodegradation of SD and the decay of DOM fluorescent components was found (correlation coefficient, 0.99), and the different indirect photodegradation of SD in various DOM solutions might be ascribed to the different components of DOM. The indirect photolysis rate of SD first increased and then decreased with increasing pH. SD photolysis was enhanced by low salinity but remained stable at high salinity. The increased carbonate concentration inhibited SD photolysis, whereas nitrate showed almost no effect in this study.

Metals are among the most toxic pollutants in urban stormwater. To investigate the concentration of dissolved and particulate fractions, the temporal variation during rain events, the effect of wash-off surface, and to assess the pollution status of metals in urban runoff, a total of 155 samples were collected mainly from trafficked areas, roofs and parking lots in Beijing from March to November 2015. Most of the metals were found mainly in the particulate fraction (68–96%) from trafficked surfaces, while for roof runoff Cd, Fe, Mn and Zn were found more equally in dissolved and particulate fractions. Metal concentrations were higher during start of a rain event than later (p < 0.05), and also were higher the longer the period of antecedent dry days. The mean concentration of all metals in trafficked areas exceeded both the Chinese standard Level III (swimming and fishery waters) and the European standards (surface water). Mean concentrations of Cd, Mn, Zn, Al, Fe, Pb and Ni from trafficked areas were 2–10 times higher due to higher traffic intensity and substantial atmospheric deposition, while Sb was 20 times higher than in any other reported data for urban runoff. Cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) together with Pearson's correlation co-efficient suggested that Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn mainly originates from vehicular activities, while Mn and Zn in roof runoff is due to atmospheric deposition. The geo-accumulation and pollution indices show that runoff from trafficked areas are moderately to heavily polluted by most metals, except Cu and Zn. Thus, Beijing urban runoff presents an environmental risk towards lakes, bathing water and drinking water. The results can be used as basis for development of stormwater and pollution control strategies.

Ecological quality objectives (EcoQOs), as tools for implementing ecosystem approach, have long been acknowledged to protect the marine ecosystems and fisheries in regional seas through joint efforts by surrounding countries over the past decade. The present review analyzed the best available meta-data relating to the five ecosystem elements that were recently proposed by the Northwest Pacific Action Plan to evaluate the current status of coastal ecosystem health in marine environment of the Yellow Sea. We suggested the six tentative EcoQOs among five ecological quality elements including: 1) biological and habitat diversity; 2) invasive species; 3) eutrophication; 4) pollutants; and 5) marine litters. Environmental status was assessed, depending on the EcoQOs targets, by comparison to the world average values, existing environmental standards, or reported values of other regional seas. Results of analysis revealed that among the six tentative EcoQOs, two target objectives to marine biodiversity and concentrations of nutrients (viz., DIN and DIP) were met towards good environmental status. Whilst, three EcoQOs relating to hypoxia and red-tide, pollutants (persistent toxic substances and metals), and marine litters (including microplastics) did not meet and one relating to invasive species could not be judged due to insufficient data sets. The biggest weak point for developing suitable EcoQOs and assessing status of ecosystem health could be insufficient meta-data sets available and/or discrepancy in methodological details cross the data-sets or between the two targeted countries. Thus, the cooperation of neighboring countries, viz., Korea and China for the Yellow Sea, is necessary for the ecosystem based management of our regional sea in the future. Overall, this first time review for the assessment of target tentative EcoQOs in the Yellow Sea region encompassing coasts of Korea and China would provide a better understanding of the current status of environmental pollution and ecosystem health.

By identifying the main sources of nitrate (NO3−) can obtain useful information to support the management of NO3− pollution, particularly in subtropical catchments with shallow drinking water wells. This study used water chemistry and dual stable isotopes δ15N and δ18O methods to assess seasonal and spatial variations of NO3− in precipitation, surface water, and groundwater in an agricultural and forest subtropical catchment in Jiangxi Province, China. The maximum concentrations of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3−-N) and ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) were 10.4 and 10.8 mg L−1in samples collected from 221 rainfall events from 2011 to 2013. About 4.4% and 12.3% NH4+-N concentrations of surface water and groundwater exceeded the thresholds of 1.0 and 0.2 mg L−1. The NO3−-N concentrations in surface water were closely correlated with NH4+-N concentrations in surface water and groundwater (r = −0.71 and r = −0.71, P < 0.05). The concentrations of NH4+-N and NO3−-N were significantly higher in a fishery pond and nearby drinking wells than in other monitoring points. Annual exports of NO3−-N and NH4+-N were 4.06 × 104 and 8.14 × 103 kg yr−1, respectively and NO3−-N is the main form of N loss. The δ15N values ranged from 0‰ to 20‰ in surface water and groundwater, and the δ18O values ranged from 0‰ to 15‰ and 1‰–13‰, respectively. Dual stable isotope natural abundance distribution and water chemistry [NO3−]/[Cl−] molar ratio information suggested that manure and sewage and soil N were the main sources of NO3− in surface water and manure and sewage in groundwater in summer and winter. In spring, water occurred denitrification and ammonium fertilizer, manure and sewage were the main sources of NO3− in surface water and groundwater which sampling points were closer residential area and fish ponds than paddy field and local farmers used more Manure. Manure applications should be reasonable around drinking water wells to protect the drinking water quality.
