Natural background levels (NBLs) and threshold values (TVs) are crucial parameters for identification and the quantification of groundwater pollution, and the evaluation of pollution control measures. The cumulative probability distribution technique was used for the evaluation of NBLs for 36 samples collected during two climate conditions in the part of the desert area from Rajasthan, India. The NBLs for Na⁺, Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, HCO₃⁻, NO₃⁻ and F⁻ ions were assessed and compared with the natural and anthropogenic processes. The TVs were also calculated for Na⁺, Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, HCO₃⁻, NO₃⁻ and F⁻ ions, and compared with the drinking limits of the Bureau of Indian Standards. Additionally, the pollution percentage (%) at the individual well was estimated and identified the polluted zones. Results indicate that most of the polluted areas were situated in the southern part, which was influenced by the natural and anthropogenic factors. The sodium concentrations above the TVs, in indicating the saline nature of water. Chloride threshold value above the drinking water limit was mainly observed in the dry season, related to intensive evaporation and industrial waste, which leads to groundwater quality degradation. The NO₃⁻ concentration (∼56% samples) above the TVs indicates extensive use of nitrate fertilizers and sewage effluent. The values of total dissolved solids (TDS) shows the suspicious scenario as about 84% of the samples in the dry period and about 89% in the wet season exceeding the drinking limit. Assessment of background concentrations and threshold values on regional and local scale assigns the basis for the identification of groundwater pollution, and helpful for better water quality guidelines to protecting of water resources.

Contaminated groundwater is considered as one of the most important pathways of human exposure to the geogenic contaminants. Present study has been conducted in a part of Indus basin to investigate the presence and spatial distribution of arsenic (As) and other trace metals in groundwater. The As concentration varies from bdl-255.6 μg/L and 24.6% of the 73 collected groundwater samples have As above world health organization (WHO) guideline of 10 μg/L. High concentration of As is found along the newer alluvium of Ravi River. As is found with high bicarbonate (HCO3−) and Iron (Fe) and low nitrate (NO3−) indicating reductive dissolution of Fe bearing minerals. However, silicate weathering along with high sulphate (SO42) and positive oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) indicates mixed redox conditions. Weathering of minerals along with other major hydrogeochemical process are responsible for composition of groundwater. With 31.5% of the samples, sodium bicarbonate (Na–HCO3) is the major water facies followed by magnesium bicarbonate (Mg–HCO3) in 30% of samples. As, Fe and other trace metals including copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn) were used to calculate the health risk for children and adults in the region. Out of 73 samples, 58% has high Fe, 32.8% has high Zn, and 4.1% has high Cd which are above the prescribed limits of WHO guidelines. Health risk of the population has been assessed using chronic dose index (CDI), hazardous quotients (HQ) and hazardous index (HI) for children and adults. The mean CDI values follows the order as Fe > Zn > Cu > As > Cr > Cd, while the HQ values indicates high As hazards for both children and adults. 43.8% of the groundwater samples have high HI for adults, however, 49.3% has high HI for children indicating higher risk for children compared to adults. A large-scale testing should be prioritized to test the wells for As and other trace metals in the study region to reduce health risks.

Microbiota associated with airborne particulate matter (PM) is an important indicator of indoor pollution as they can be pathogenic and cause serious health threats to the exposed occupants. Present study aimed to investigate the level of culturable microbes associated with PM and their toxicological characterization in urban and rural houses of Pune city. Highest concentration of bacterial aerosols observed to be associated with PM₁₀ size fraction in urban site (2136 ± 285 CFU/m³) whereas maximum fungal concentration has been measured in rural houses (1521 ± 302 CFU/m³). Predominantly found bacterial species were Bacillus sp., S. aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungal species were Aspergillus sp., Cladosporium sp., and Penicillium sp. in both urban and rural residential premises. Concentration of endotoxin measured using the kinetic Limulus Amebocyte Lysate assay exhibited that the level of endotoxin in both urban and rural sites are associated with household characteristics and the activities performed in indoor as well as outdoor. Cell free DTT assay confirmed the ability of these airborne microbes to induce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) varying along with the types of microorganisms. On exposure of A549 cells to airborne microbes, a significant decrease in cell viability was observed in terms of both necrosis and apoptosis pathway. Elevated production of nitric oxide (NO) and proinflammatory cytokines in epithelial cells and macrophages clearly suggest the inflammatory nature of these airborne microbes. Results derived from the present study demonstrated that the indoor air of urban and rural houses of Pune is contaminated in terms of microbial load. Therefore, attention should be paid to control the factors favoring the microbial growth in order to safeguard the health of exposed inhabitants.

Rice is a known bioaccumulator of methylmercury (MeHg). Rice consumption may be the primary pathway of MeHg exposure in certain mercury (Hg)-contaminated areas of the world. Pakistan is the 4th-largest rice exporter in the world after India, Thailand, and Vietnam. This study aimed to evaluate the Hg contamination status of rice from Pakistan and the health risks associated with Hg exposure through its consumption. 500 rice grain samples were collected from two major rice-growing provinces, Punjab and Sindh, which contain 92% of Pakistan’s rice cultivation area. Analysis of polished rice showed mean total Hg (THg) concentration of 4.51 ng.g⁻¹, while MeHg concentrations of selected samples averaged 3.71 ng.g⁻¹. Only 2% of the samples exceeded the permissible limit of 20 ng.g⁻¹. Samples collected from Punjab showed higher Hg contents than those from Sindh, possibly due to higher rates of urbanization and industrialization. Rice samples collected from areas near brick-making kilns had the highest Hg concentrations due to emissions from the low-quality coal burned. THg and MeHg contents varied by up to five and fourfold, respectively, between point and non-point Hg pollution sites. Moreover, the %Hg as MeHg in rice did not differ significantly between point and non-point Hg sources. Health risk was assessed by calculating a mean probable daily intake, revealing that Hg intake through rice consumption is within the safe limits recommended by the World Health Organization. However, rice intake may be a substantive pathway of MeHg exposure because fish, which are another major source of Hg, are consumed in Pakistan at some of the world’s lowest rates. This study provides fundamental data for further understanding of the global issue of Hg contamination of rice and its related health risks. Furthermore, the current study suggests there is a need to conduct further research in rice-growing areas at the regional level.

The aquifer in Tondiarpet, Chennai, had been severely contaminated with petroleum fuels due to an underground pipeline leakage. Groundwater samples were analyzed quarterly for priority pollutants such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and naphthalene (BTEXN) using purge and trap gas chromatography and mass spectrometer from 2016 to 2018. The maximum concentrations of BTEXN in groundwater at the site were found to be greater than the permissible limits significantly. Among the five sampling locations (MW1, MW2, MW3, MW4, and MW5), mean BTEXN levels were found to be higher near MW2, confirming the source location of petroleum leakage. Human health risk assessment was carried out using deterministic and probabilistic methods for exposure to BTEXN by oral and dermal exposure pathways. Risk analysis indicated that mean cancer and non-cancer risks were many times higher than the allowable limits of 1E-06 and 1 respectively in all age groups (children, teens, and adults), implying the adverse health effects. Oral exposure is predominately contributing (60–80%) to the total health risk in comparison to the dermal exposure route. Variability and uncertainty were addressed using the Monte Carlo simulations and the resultant minimum, maximum, 5th, 95th, and mean percentile risks were predicted. Under the random exposure conditions to BTEXN, it was estimated that the risk would become unacceptable for >98.7% of the exposed population. Based on the sensitivity analysis, exposure duration, and ingestion rate are the crucial variables contributing significantly to the health risk. As part of the risk management, preliminary remediation goals for the study site were estimated, which require >99% removal of the BTEXN contamination for risk-free exposures. It is suggested that the residents of Tondiarpet shouldn’t utilize the contaminated groundwater mainly for oral ingestion to lower the cancer incidence related to exposure to BTEXN.

Continuous measurements of Black Carbon (BC) aerosol mass concentrations were carried at Dehradun (30.33°N, 78.04°E, 700 m amsl), a semi-urban site in the foothills of north-westHimalayas, India during January 2011–December 2017. We reported both the BC seasonal variations as well as mass concentrations from fossil fuel combustion (BCff) and biomass burning (BCbb) sources. Annual mean BC exhibited a strong seasonal variability with maxima during winter (4.86 ± 0.78 μg m⁻³) followed by autumn (4.18 ± 0.54 μg m⁻³), spring (3.93 ± 0.75 μg m⁻³) and minima during summer (2.41 ± 0.66 μg m⁻³). Annual averaged BC mass concentrations were 3.85 ± 1.16 μg m⁻³ varying from 3.29 to 4.37 μg m⁻³ whereas BCff and BCbb ranged from 0.11 to 7.12 μg m⁻³ and 0.13–3.6 μg m⁻³. The percentage contributions from BCff and BCbb to total BC are 66% and 34% respectively, indicating relatively higher contribution from biomass burning as compared to other locations in India. This is explained using potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration weighted trajectories (CWT) analysis which reveals the potential sources of BC originating from the north-west and eastern parts of IGP and the western part of the Himalayas that are mostly crop residue burning and forest fire regions in India. The annual mean ARF at top-of-atmosphere (TOA), at surface (SUR), and within the atmosphere (ATM) were found to be −14.84 Wm⁻², −43.41 Wm⁻², and +28.57 Wm⁻² respectively. To understand the impact of columnar aerosol burden on ARF, the radiative forcing efficiency (ARFE) was estimated and averaged values were −31.81, −91.63 and 59.82 Wm⁻² τ⁻¹ for TOA, SUR and ATM respectively. The high ARFE within the atmosphere indicates the dominance of absorbing aerosol (BC and dust) over Northwest Himalayas.

Air quality in the megacity Delhi is affected not only by local emissions but also by pollutants from crop residue burning in the surrounding areas of the city, particularly the rice straw burning in the post monsoon season. As a major burning product, gaseous CO₂, which is rather inert in the polluted atmosphere, provides an alternative solution to characterize the impact of biomass burning from a new perspective that other common tracers such as particulate matters are limited because of their physical and chemical reactiveness. Here, we report conventional ([CO₂], δ¹³C, and δ¹⁸O) and unconventional (Δ¹⁷O) isotope data for CO₂ collected at Connaught Place (CP), a core area in the megacity Delhi, and two surrounding remote regions during a field campaign in October 18–20, 2017. We also measured the isotopic ratios near a rice straw burning site in Taiwan to constrain their end member isotopic compositions. Rice straw burning produces CO₂ with δ¹³C, δ¹⁸O, and Δ¹⁷O values of −29.02 ± 0.65, 19.63 ± 1.16, and 0.05 ± 0.02‰, respectively. The first two isotopic tracers are less distinguishable from those emitted by fossil fuel combustion but the last one is significantly different. We then utilize these end member isotopic ratios, with emphasis on Δ¹⁷O for the reason given above, for partitioning sources that affect the CO₂ level in Delhi. Anthropogenic fraction of CO₂ at CP ranges from 4 to 40%. Further analysis done by employing a three-component (background, rice straw burning, and fuel combustion) mixing model with constraints from the Δ¹⁷O values yields that rice straw burning contributes as much as ∼70% of the total anthropogenic CO₂, which is more than double of the fossil fuel contribution (∼30%), during the study days.

We conducted the first comprehensive assessment of the presence, source, and ecotoxicological implication of 13 banned and restricted organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the surface water along the Ganga River for two different seasons. Surface water samples were collected along the 2525 km stretch of the Ganga through 43 sites representing five zones of diverse land-use pattern, pesticide consumption rate, and varied flow. The mean concentrations of ΣOCPs were significantly higher (∼2–5 times) in the post-monsoon or wet season [range: 0.126 to 10.402 μg/L (mean: 2.482 μg/L ± 3.589 and median: 1.433)] than in the post-winter or dry season [range: 0.053 to 3.010 μg/L (mean: 0.765 μg/L±1.033 and median: 0.399)]. Lindane (γ-HCH) was the dominant and most frequently detected pesticide at all the sites, indicating possible continued use of this banned pesticide in agricultural practices. The spatial distribution of OCPs revealed non-significant difference amongst different zones and indicate that point source pollution from the open drains along the Ganga could be responsible for observed trend. Ratio diagnostic analysis highlighted the fresh inputs and potential illegal use of lindane and chlordane at all the zones whereas, historical use of DDT was revealed at the majority of sites. Interestingly, fresh inputs of DDT were observed in the relatively pristine high altitude Upper zone (UZ) suggesting long-range atmospheric transfer and its continued use in the zone. Risk quotient (RQ) analysis revealed high ecotoxicological risks (>1), at all the studied sites for p, p’ DDE. The lower zone (LZ) emerged as a high ecological risk zone. The study highlights that though the OCPs analysed in this study are banned/restricted in India, still the implementation of the ban is poor and delayed and the country requires stricter adherence to its National Implementation Plan (NIP) on pesticides.

Wastewater effluents released in surface water provides suitable nutrient rich environment for the growth and proliferation of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and genes (ARG). Consequently, bacterial resistance has highly evolved over the recent years and diversified that each antibiotic class is inhibited by a distinct mechanism. In the present study, the prevalence of Multidrug resistant (MDR), extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and plasmid mediated Amp-C producing strains was analyzed in 28 surface water samples collected near domestic effluent discharge sites in river Ganga located across 11 different geographical indices of Uttar Pradesh, India. A total of 243 bacterial strains with different phenotypes were isolated. Among 243 isolates, 206 (84.77%) exhibited MDR trait displaying maximum resistance towards β-lactams (P = 78.19%; AMX = 72.84%), glycopeptides (VAN = 32.92%; TEI = 79.42%), cephalosporins (CF = 67.90%; CFX = 38.27%), and lincosamides (CD = 78.18%) followed by sulfonamide, macrolide and tetracycline. ESBL production was confirmed in 126 (51.85%) isolates that harbored the genes: blaTEM (95.24%), blaSHV (22.22%), blaOXA (11.90%) and blaCTX-M group (14.28%). The presence of plasmid mediated AmpC was detected only in 6.17% of isolates. The existence of such pathogenic strains in the open environment generates an urgent need for incorporating stringent measures to reduce the antibiotic consumption and hence its release.

The present study attempts to explore and compare the seasonal variability in chemical composition and contributions of different sources of fine and coarse fractions of aerosols (PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀) in Delhi, India from January 2013 to December 2016. The annual average concentrations of PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀ were 131 ± 79 μg m⁻³ (range: 17–417 μg m⁻³) and 238 ± 106 μg m⁻³ (range: 34–537 μg m⁻³), respectively. PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀ samples were chemically characterized to assess their chemical components [i.e. organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water soluble inorganic ionic components (WSICs) and heavy and trace elements] and then used for estimation of enrichment factors (EFs) and applied positive matrix factorization (PMF5) model to evaluate their prominent sources on seasonal basis in Delhi. PMF identified eight major sources i.e. Secondary nitrate (SN), secondary sulphate (SS), vehicular emissions (VE), biomass burning (BB), soil dust (SD), fossil fuel combustion (FFC), sodium and magnesium salts (SMS) and industrial emissions (IE). Total carbon contributes ∼28% to the total PM₂.₅ concentration and 24% to the total PM₁₀ concentration and followed the similar seasonality pattern. SN and SS followed opposite seasonal pattern, where SN was higher during colder seasons while SS was greater during warm seasons. The seasonal differences in VE contributions were not very striking as it prevails evidently most of year. Emissions from BB is one of the major sources in Delhi with larger contribution during winter and post monsoon seasons due to stable meteorological conditions and aggrandized biomass burning (agriculture residue burning in and around the regions; mainly Punjab and Haryana) and domestic heating during the season. Conditional Bivariate Probability Function (CBPF) plots revealed that the maximum concentrations of PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀ were carried by north westerly winds (north-western Indo Gangetic Plains of India).
