Bisphenol S (BPS) has been progressively used due to the potential safety problems of bisphenol A (BPA). Thus Human studies are needed to investigate the developmental effects of BPS. In this study, the impact of maternal BPS exposure on birth outcomes was evaluated with linear and logistic regression models. BPS was analyzed in spot urine samples collected from 985 pregnant women at admission to labor. It was found in 93.7% of the urine samples with the specific gravity adjusted geometric mean concentration of 0.17 μg/L. One ln-unit increase in urinary BPS was associated with a 0.72-day increase in pregnancy duration (95% CI: 0.34, 1.09). When stratified by fetal sex, each ln-unit increase in maternal urinary BPS was significantly correlated with increased gestational age [adjusted β = 1.02, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.47, 1.57] and increased odds of late term birth [adjusted odds ratio = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.00, 1.67] for girls, but not significantly for boys. Including maternal urinary BPA and BPS in one model did not change the results. Associations of BPS with birth weight or length were not observed. This is the first report about BPS exposure for pregnant women from China. Higher maternal urinary BPS concentrations were associated with increased gestational age, suggesting maternal BPS exposure may interfere with pregnancy duration. The findings require replication but reveal the probable risks posed by the developmental BPS exposure.

Child labor is a major challenge in the developing countries and comprehensive health hazard identification studies on this issue are still lacking. Therefore, the current study is an effort to highlight the health concerns of child labor exposed in the key small scale industries of Sialkot, Pakistan. Our findings revealed jolting levels of heavy metals in the urine, blood, serum, saliva, and hair samples collected from the exposed children. For example, in the urine samples, Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb were measured at the respective concentrations of 39.17, 62.02, 11.94 and 10.53 μg/L in the surgical industries, and 2.10, 4.41, 1.04 and 5.35 μg/L in the leather industries. In addition, source apportionment revealed polishing, cutting, and welding sections in the surgical industries and surface coating, crusting, and stitching sections in the leather industries were the highest contributors of heavy metals in the bio-matrices of the exposed children, implying the dusty, unhygienic, and unhealthy indoor working conditions. Further, among all the bio-matrices, the hair samples expressed the highest bioaccumulation factor for heavy metals. In accordance with the heavy metal levels reported in the exposed children, higher oxidative stress was found in the children working in the surgical industries than those from the leather industries. Moreover, among heavy metals’ exposure pathways, inhalation of industrial dust was identified as the primary route of exposure followed by the ingestion and dermal contact. Consequently, chemical daily intake (CDI), carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic hazard quotients (HQs) of heavy metals were also reported higher in the exposed children and were also alarmingly higher than the corresponding US EPA threshold limits. Taken all together, children were facing serious health implications in these industries and need immediate protective measures to remediate the current situation.

Chromium exposure from increasing industrial releases has become a threat for pregnant women due to the potential health effects on vulnerable embryos. Previous studies have suggested that maternal chromium exposure is associated with adverse birth outcomes, but no epidemiological research has been conducted to examine the relationship between chromium exposure and premature rupture of membranes (PROM). This study aimed at investigating the association of maternal urinary chromium exposure levels with PROM and was performed with 5408 pregnant women recruited from 2012 to 2014 in the city of Wuhan, China. Maternal urinary chromium collected before labor was adjusted with creatinine, and its association with PROM was evaluated using logistic regression. Each one unit increase in the natural logarithm transformed maternal urinary chromium concentration (μg/g creatinine), an odds ratio (OR) of 1.47 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.36, 1.58] for PROM was observed. Compared to the lowest tertile of maternal urinary chromium, PROM was positively correlated with increased urinary levels of chromium (adjusted OR = 1.42; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.84 for the medium tertile; adjusted OR = 2.77; 95% CI: 2.18, 3.52 for the highest tertile). Additionally, the association of chromium with PROM appeared to be more significant among male infants (adjusted OR = 3.52; 95% CI: 2.51, 4.94 for the highest tertile) than female infants (adjusted OR = 2.16; 95% CI: 1.52, 3.06 for the highest tertile) (p for interaction = 0.05). Our large birth cohort showed an association between maternal urinary chromium levels and PROM, and the association may differ by infant gender. Further studies from different populations are needed to confirm the observed association.

Agricultural soils are a leading source of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and are major contributors to global climate change. Carbon dioxide (CO2) makes up 20% of the total GHG emitted from agricultural soil. Therefore, an evaluation of CO2 emissions from agricultural soil is necessary in order to make mitigation strategies for environmental efficiency and economic planning possible. However, quantification of CO2 emissions through experimental methods is constrained due to the large time and labour requirements for analysis. Therefore, a modelling approach is needed to achieve this objective. In this paper, the DeNitrification-DeComposition (DNDC), a process-based model, was modified to predict CO2 emissions for Canada from regional conditions. The modified DNDC model was applied at three experimental sites in the province of Saskatchewan. The results indicate that the simulations of the modified DNDC model are in good agreement with observations. The agricultural management of fertilization and irrigation were evaluated using scenario analysis. The simulated total annual CO2 flux changed on average by ±13% and ±1% following a ±50% variance of the total amount of N applied by fertilising and the total amount of water through irrigation applications, respectively. Therefore, careful management of irrigation and applications of fertiliser can help to reduce CO2 emissions from the agricultural sector.

Zero valent iron (ZVI) has been widely tested and used in remediation of both contaminated soils and groundwater, and in general, the in situ amendment of the contaminated media is used as remediation approach. However, concerns remain as to the potential detrimental effects of both the immobilized ZVI and the adsorbed pollutants as the treated system could undergo transformations over time. Accordingly, plans for soil remediation by in situ immobilization of sorbents should include a long-term monitoring of the treated systems. Here, we report on a comparative study in which artificially Cu-contaminated sandy and organic soils characterized by different metal binding capacities were treated by either (i) in situ immobilization of ZVI in the soils, or (ii) by a ZVI amendment followed by magnetic retrieval of formed ZVI-Cu complexes prior to plant growth studies. The latter relies on the combination of the high metal adsorption capacity and magnetism of ZVI. Two plant species, Lactuca sativa (lettuce) and Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) were used to assess the efficiency of the two treatment methods in eliminating the bioavailable fraction of Cu. Overall, the results showed that, if soil remediation by in situ immobilization reduces the bio-accessible fraction of Cu, treatment using ZVI amendment followed by magnetic separation performs better. The latter resulted in less Cu accumulated in the shoots and roots of plants. In parallel to the plant growth study, we used MetPLATE™, a short-term bioassay based on the inhibition of the β-galactosidase enzyme by the bioavailable fraction of heavy metal cations, to predict the efficiency of the two treatment methods with regard to the elimination of Cu phyto-toxicity. The results of the bioassay confirmed the trends of phyto-toxicity results, suggesting that MetPLATE™ could be an adequate alternative to the more expensive, labor intensive, and time consuming plant growth studies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Workplace noise negatively impacts health, and noise-induced hearing loss is the most common work-related disease in many countries. Occupational noise may also cause cardiovascular disease, and there is epidemiologic evidence on the non-auditory effects of noise. This paper aims to briefly present and summarize the latest evidence on the auditory and non-auditory health effects of occupational noise exposure from the last 5 years. RECENT FINDINGS: Two systematic reviews assessing the cardiovascular effects of occupational noise exposure were published in the last year. Our own recent review found convincing evidence of an association between occupational noise exposure > 80 dB(A) and hypertension and a dose-response relationship between noise exposure and hypertension risk. Another review of cardiovascular disease conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) found an increased risk of incident ischemic heart disease at noise exposures ≥ 85 dB(A). Recent reviews on work-related injuries, diabetes, acoustic neuroma, and pregnancy outcomes also find noise-related associations. Evidence of an association between occupational noise and cardiovascular outcomes was recently evaluated. We found the risk of hypertension increases with a clear dose-response relationship at noise levels > 80 dB(A). The WHO/ILO review highlights the lack of quality research including women. Additional high-quality research on epigenetic effects, oxidative stress, work-related injuries, diabetes, acoustic neuroma, and pregnancy outcomes is also needed. Urgently needed (increased) measures of workplace noise reduction will reduce the incidence of noise-induced hearing loss and help prevent cardiovascular diseases, especially hypertension.

Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), n-alkanes, petroleum biomarkers, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in the intertidal sediments of Burrard Inlet, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Most of the sampling sites had low TPH (<40 μg/g). Only 10% of sampling sites, located nearby a harbour and densely populated areas, had relatively high TPH (<260 μg/g). Main biogenic n-alkanes were present in all the sites, except for the main petrogenic input in the sample from the upper intertidal zone (UIZ) of the Maplewood Mudflats. Most sites had trace amounts of petroleum biomarkers. Mixed pyrogenic and petrogenic inputs contributed to PAHs at most sites. PAHs did not show potential toxicity to benthic organisms at most sites; however, possible negative effects from some of the detected PAHs were found for the samples from the UIZs of the Maplewood Mudflats and Labour View Park, and from the lower intertidal zone (LIZ) of Gates Park.

Real time quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) was used at four marine bathing beaches in New Jersey as part of a demonstration project to evaluate the potential for use of qPCR as part of a routine beach monitoring program. Split sample analyses for Enterococcus spp. using membrane filtration (MF) and qPCR were performed for 11weeks during the summer of 2011 using swimming advisories based on qPCR results. Comparison of qPCR and MF results from split samples indicated that there was an 82% overall agreement rate between the two methods. Results from the qPCR tests were available by noon the same day of sample collection and swimming advisories were posted on a dedicated website. The qPCR method can be more labor intensive and requires a higher level of training to perform, however, qPCR was able to assess beach water quality in a timelier manner compared to conventional MF techniques.

The formation of acid mine drainage (AMD), a highly acidic and metal-rich solution, is the biggest environmental concern associated with coal and mineral mining. Once produced, AMD can severely impact the surrounding ecosystem due to its acidity, metal toxicity, sedimentation and other deleterious properties. Hence, implementations of effective post-mining management practices are necessary to control AMD pollution. Due to the existence of a number of federal and state regulations, it is necessary for private and government agencies to come up with various AMD treatment and/or control technologies. This review describes some of the widely used AMD remediation technologies in terms of their general working principles, advantages and shortcomings. AMD treatment technologies can be divided into two major categories, namely prevention and remediation. Prevention techniques mainly focus on inhibiting AMD formation reactions by controlling the source. Remediation techniques focus on the treatment of already produced AMD before their discharge into water bodies. Remediation technologies can be further divided into two broad categories: active and passive. Due to high cost and intensive labor requirements for maintenance of active treatment technologies, passive treatments are widely used all over the world. Besides the conventional passive treatment technologies such as constructed wetlands, anaerobic sulfate-reducing bioreactors, anoxic limestone drains, open limestone channels, limestone leach beds and slag leach beds, this paper also describes emerging passive treatment technologies such as phytoremediation. More intensive research is needed to develop an efficient and cost-effective AMD treatment technology, which can sustain persistent and long-term AMD load.

Tunisia is among the developing countries that have taken initiatives to develop renewable energy and strengthen energy efficiency. Moreover, it has considerable potential, especially in the field of wind and solar energy. However, the country is still dependent on fossil fuel energy. In this context, the transition to renewable energy is considered one of the possible solutions to reduce energy dependence and strengthen the economy in general. Therefore, the aim of this research study is to evaluate the role of renewable energy in shaping the energy transition in Tunisia in order to qualify the possibilities of energy transition. Accordingly, we investigate the potential for substitution between the following factors and fuels: Capital, labor, renewable, and non-renewable energy in Tunisia using a translog production function approach. Due to the multicollinearity of the model, the ridge regression method is used to estimate the parameters of the function. The obtained results showed that the possibility of substitution between inputs, especially between renewable and non-renewable energy, can replace fossil fuels with clean energy consumption. Moreover, to maximize the potential of renewable energy in Tunisia, this study recommends that policy makers should take more reliable measures to reflect the exact price of energy through price regulation measures, encourage investment in research and development, and introduce carbon taxes that could accelerate this transition.
