Water pollution is one of the main challenges and water crises, which has caused the existing water resources to be unusable due to contamination. To understand the determinants of the distribution and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), we examined the distribution of 22 ARGs in relation to habitat type, heavy metal pollution and antibiotics concentration across six lakes and wetlands of Iran. The concentration of 13 heavy metals was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) by Thermo Electron Corporation, and five antibiotics by online enrichment and triple-quadrupole LC-MS/MS were investigated. We further performed a global meta-analysis to evaluate the distribution of ARGs across global lakes compared with our studied lakes. While habitat type effect was negligible, we found a strong correlation between waste discharge into the lakes and the abundance of ARGs. The ARGs abundance showed stronger correlation with the concentration of heavy metals, such as Vanadium, than with that of antibiotics. Our meta-analysis also confirmed that overuse of antibiotics and discharge of heavy metals in the studied lakes. These data point to an increase in the distribution of ARGs among bacteria and their increasing resistance to various antibiotics, implying the susceptibility of aquatic environment to industrial pollution.

Release of phosphorus (P) from sediment to overlying water has to be dealt with to address algal blooms in eutrophic lakes. In this study, the sediment from the Lake Taihu was amended with lanthanum modified zeolite (LMZ) to reduce P release under different pH, temperature and anaerobic conditions. LMZ performed well, to decreasing P concentration in Lake Taihu water in the presence of sediment. The EPC₀ value, the critical P concentration at which there was neither P adsorption nor P release, was lowered by adding LMZ, suggesting that amendment with LMZ could diminish the risk of P release from the sediment. From the Langmuir isotherm model, the adsorption capacity of phosphate by LMZ was estimated to be 64.1 mgP/g. The LMZ-amended sediment had a higher content of stable P forms (HCl-P and Res-P) and a lower content of P forms with a high (NH₄Cl-P and BD-P) or medium-high (NaOH-P and Org-P) risk of release, when compared with the original sediment. The fractionation simulates conditions which release potentially mobile P which can then be simply re-bound to LMZ. At high pH (>9.0), anaerobic condition or high temperature promoted the liberation of P from sediment. However, P release could be greatly inhibited by LMZ. In addition, although Mn²⁺ and NH₄⁺ ions were released from sediment under the anaerobic condition, the release could also be hindered by adding LMZ. LMZ is a promising P inactivation agent to manage eutrophication in the sediment of Lake Taihu.

We measured selenium (Se) speciation in the waters of 16 lakes located near two major metal smelters and compared it to Se concentrations in a potential biomonitor, the planktivorous insect Chaoborus. We used this sentinel because planktonic algae and crustaceans, which are lower in the trophic chain leading to Chaoborus, are more difficult to separate and identify to species, whereas many fish species are not obligate planktivores. Percentages of selenate and organo-Se were generally higher in acidic lakes, whereas those of selenite were usually greater in alkaline waters. Chaoborus Se concentrations varied widely among lakes and, with the exception of a single high-sulfate lake, were significantly and highly correlated with those of dissolved organo-Se plus selenate (Se(VI)). We suggest that Chaoborus larvae would be highly effective for monitoring the Se-exposure of planktonic food webs in lakes.

Studies on microplastic (MP) pollution in lakes are recent, although the problem of MP particles in the oceans was first discovered in the 1970s. The first study on lakes was published in 2011. Since then, to our knowledge, 98 lakes have been investigated worldwide. In recent years, studies on this topic have increased worldwide, particularly those focusing on urbanised lakes. Most of the plastic waste in the seas and oceans originates from the terrestrial environment and inland waters. Moreover, lakes are potential temporary or long-term MP accumulators, according to the residence time of water. They are also of high interest for biodiversity, ecology, and the economy. Lacustrine ecosystems may suffer the same fate as marine ecosystems, or even worse, owing to their greater exposure. With the significant focus on ocean and sea contamination, contamination of freshwater ecosystems and lakes is a new and rising topic. However, as a new field of research, several methodological issues have been raised. The team diversity worldwide has led to contrasting sampling techniques and materials, sample treatments, analyses, and presentation of results. Consequently, it is necessary to determine several consensuses between scientific teams in order to work together with accuracy, produce comparable results, speed up knowledge sharing and reduce the reproducibility crisis. This review focuses on (1) MP contamination in 98 worldwide lakes. We identify (2) the theoretical sources of MPs and provide (3) an estimate of MP pollution in different compartments of the lakes based on current state-of-the-art methods. In addition, we also report (4) the predominant MP size classes and polymer types. Finally, we suggest (5) several recommendations to build a consensus between all the working teams to facilitate decision-making by public authorities.

Methylmercury (MeHg) produced by anaerobic bacteria in lakes and reservoirs, poses a threat to ecosystem and human health due to its ability to bioaccumulate in aquatic food webs. This study used 48-hr microcosm incubations of profundal sediment and bottom water from a sulfate-rich, hypereutrophic reservoir to assess seasonal patterns of MeHg cycling under various treatments. Treatments included addition of air, Hg(II), organic carbon, and microbial inhibitors. Both aeration and sodium molybdate, a sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) inhibitor, generally decreased MeHg concentration in microcosm water, likely by inhibiting SRB activity. The methanogenic inhibitor bromoethanesulfonate increased MeHg concentration 2- to 4- fold, suggesting that methanogens were potent demethylators. Pyruvate increased MeHg concentration under moderately reduced conditions, likely by stimulating SRB, but decreased it under highly reduced conditions, likely by stimulating methanogens. Acetate increased MeHg concentration, likely due to the stimulation of acetotrophic SRB. Results suggest that iron-reducing bacteria (IRB) were not especially prominent methylators and MeHg production at the sediment-water interface is elevated under moderately reduced conditions corresponding with SRB activity. In contrast, it is suppressed under oxic conditions due to low SRB activity, and under highly reduced conditions (<-100 mV) due to enhanced demethylation by methanogens.

Arctic permafrost soils contain large amounts of organic carbon and the pollutant mercury (Hg). Arctic warming and associated changes in hydrology, biogeochemistry and ecology risk mobilizing soil Hg to rivers and to the Arctic Ocean, yet little is known about the quantity, timing and mechanisms involved. Here we investigate seasonal particulate Hg (PHg) and organic carbon (POC) export in 32 small and medium rivers across a 1700 km latitudinal permafrost transect of the western Siberian Lowland. The PHg concentrations in suspended matter increased with decreasing watershed size. This underlines the significance of POC-rich small streams and wetlands in PHg export from watersheds. Maximum PHg concentrations and export fluxes were located in rivers at the beginning of permafrost zone (sporadic permafrost). We suggest this reflects enhanced Hg mobilization at the permafrost boundary, due to maximal depth of the thawed peat layer. Both the thickness of the active (unfrozen) peat layer and PHg run-off progressively move to the north during the summer and fall seasons, thus leading to maximal PHg export at the sporadic to discontinuous permafrost zone. The discharge-weighed PHg:POC ratio in western Siberian rivers (2.7 ± 0.5 μg Hg: g C) extrapolated to the whole Ob River basin yields a PHg flux of 1.5 ± 0.3 Mg y⁻¹, consistent with previous estimates. For current climate warming and permafrost thaw scenarios in western Siberia, we predict that a northward shift of permafrost boundaries and increase of active layer depth may enhance the PHg export by small rivers to the Arctic Ocean by a factor of two over the next 10–50 years.

As tracers, rare earth elements (REEs) can reflect the influence of human activities on the environmental changes in aquatic systems. To reveal the geochemical behavior of REEs in a water–sediment system influenced by human activities, the contents of REEs in the surface water and sediment in the Chaohu Lake Basin were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS). The results show that the ΣREE contents in the surface water are 0.10–0.850 μg L⁻¹, the ΣREE contents in the sediments are 71.14–210.01 μg g⁻¹, and the average contents are 0.24 μg L⁻¹ and 126.72 μg g⁻¹, respectively. Almost all water and sediment samples have obvious light REE (LREE) enrichment, which is the result of the input of LREE-rich substances released by natural processes and human activities (industrial and agricultural production). Under the alkaline water quality conditions of Chaohu Lake, REEs (especially LREEs) are easily removed from water by adsorption/coprecipitation reactions with suspended colloidal particles, which leads to the enrichment of LREEs in sediments. The Ce anomaly of the water–sediment system is related to the oxidation environment, while the Eu anomaly is related to the plagioclase crystallization. Significant Gd anomalies was observed in the downstream of rivers flowing through urban areas, which was related to the anthropogenic Gd wastewater discharged by hospitals. The ∑REE–δEu and provenance index (PI) discrimination results are consistent, indicating that the sediments in Chaohu Lake mainly come from rivers flowing through the southwest farmland. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of REEs shows that these tributaries are significantly affected by agricultural activities. The distribution and accumulation of REEs in Chaohu Lake are the result of the interaction of natural and human processes. The results can provide a scientific reference for the distribution and environmental behavior of REEs in aquatic environments disturbed by human beings.

Lakes in arid regions are experiencing mercury pollution via air deposition and surface runoff, posing a threat to ecosystem safety and human health. Furthermore, salinity and organic matter input could influence the mercury cycle and composition of bacterial communities in the sediment. In this study, the effects of salinity and algae biomass as an important organic matter on the genes (merA and hgcA) involved in the mercury cycle under mercury contamination were investigated. Archaeal merA and hgcA were not detected in sediments of lake microcosms, indicating that bacteria rather than archaea played a crucial role in mercury reduction and methylation. The high content of mercury (300 ng g⁻¹) could reduce the abundance of both merA and hgcA. The effects of salinity and algae biomass on mercury cycling genes depended on the gene type and dose. A higher input of algae biomass (250 mg L⁻¹) led to an increase of merA abundance, but a decrease of hgcA abundance. All high inputs of mercury, salinity, and algae biomass decreased the richness and diversity of bacterial communities in sediment. Further analysis indicated that higher mercury (300 ng g⁻¹) led to an increased relative abundance of mercury methylators, such as Ruminococcaceae, Bacteroidaceae, and Veillonellaceae. Under saline conditions (10 and 30 g L⁻¹), the richness of specific bacteria associated with mercury reduction (Halomonadaceae) and methylation (Syntrophomonadaceae) increased compared to the control. The input of algae biomass led to an increase in the specific bacterial communities associated with the mercury cycle and the richness of bacteria involved in the decomposition of organic matter. These results provide insight into mercury cycle-related genes and bacterial communities in the sediments of lakes in arid regions.

Selenium (Se) is both an essential micronutrient and a contaminant of concern that is of particular interest in mining-influenced waterbodies in Canada. The objective of this research was to characterize the trophic dynamics of selenium along a gradient of exposure concentrations in a Canadian boreal lake ecosystem. From June 20 to August 22, 2018, six limnocorrals (littoral, ∼3000 L enclosures) were spiked with mean measured concentrations of 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.4, 5.6 and 7.9 μg Se/L as selenite, and three limnocorrals served as untreated controls (background aqueous Se = 0.08–0.09 μg/L). Total Se (TSe) concentrations in water, periphyton, phytoplankton, sediment, benthic macroinvertebrates, zooplankton and female finescale dace (Phoxinus neogaeus; added on day 21 of the experiment) were measured throughout and at the end of the experiment. Total Se bioaccumulation by organisms was generally non-linear. Greater uptake by phytoplankton than periphyton was observed. Taxonomic differences in accumulation of TSe by invertebrates (Heptageniidae = Chironomidae > zooplankton) were observed as well. Fish muscle and ovary tissue TSe bioaccumulation was more variable than that at lower trophic levels and uptake patterns indicated that fish did not reach steady state concentrations. This research provides field-derived models for the uptake of Se by algae and invertebrates, and contributes to a better understanding of the dynamics of TSe bioaccumulation over a gradient of exposure concentrations in cold-water lentic systems.

The upper Columbia River and associated valley systems are highly contaminated with metal wastes from nearby smelting operations in Trail, British Columbia, Canada (Teck smelter), and to a lesser extent, Northport, Washington, USA (Le Roi smelter). Previous studies have investigated depositional patterns of airborne emissions from these smelters, and documented the Teck smelter as the primary metal contamination source. However, there is limited research directed at whether these contaminants are bioavailable to aquatic organisms. This study investigates whether smelter derived contaminants are bioavailable to freshwater zooplankton. Trace metal (Zn, Cd, As, Sb, Pb and Hg) concentrations and Pb isotope compositions of zooplankton and sediment were measured in lakes ranging from 17 to 144 km downwind of the Teck smelter. Pb isotopic compositions of historic ores used by both smelters are uniquely less radiogenic than local geologic formations, so when zooplankton assimilate substantial amounts of smelter derived metals their compositions deviate from local baseline compositions toward ore compositions. Sediment metal concentrations and Pb isotope compositions in sediment follow significant (p < 0.001) negative exponential and sigmoidal patterns, respectively, as distance from the Teck smelting operation increases. Zooplankton As, Cd, and Sb contents were related to distance from the Teck smelter (p < 0.05), and zooplankton Pb isotope compositions suggest As, Cd, Sb and Pb from historic and current smelter emissions are biologically available to zooplankton. Zooplankton from lakes within 86 km of the Teck facility display isotopic evidence that legacy ore pollution is biologically available for assimilation. However, without water column data our study is unable to determine if legacy contaminants are remobilized from lake sediments, or erosional pathways from the watershed.
