Indices and models of surface water quality assessment: Review and perspectives

Many technologies have been designed to monitor, evaluate, and improve surface water quality, as high-quality water is essential for human activities including agriculture, livestock, and industry. As such, in this study, we investigated water quality indices (WQIs), trophic status indices (TSIs), and heavy metal indices (HMIs) for assessing surface water quality. Based on these indices, we summarised and compared water assessment models using expert system (ES) and machine learning (ML) methods. We also discussed the current status and future perspectives of water quality management. The results of our analyses showed that assessment indices can be used in three aspects of surface water quality assessment: WQIs are aggregated from multiple parameters and commonly used in surface water quality classification; TSIs are calculated from the concentrations of different nutrients required for algae and bacteria, and employed to evaluate the eutrophication levels of lakes and reservoirs; HMIs are mainly applied for human health risk assessment and the analysis of correlation of heavy metal sources. ES- and ML-based assessment models have been developed to efficiently generate assessment indices and predict water quality status based on big data obtained from new techniques. By implementing dynamic monitoring and analysis of water quality, we designed a next-generation water quality management system based on the above indices and assessment models, which shows promise for improving the accuracy of water quality assessment.

Hot moments of nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions induced by interactions between weather and management make a major contribution to annual N₂O budgets in agricultural soils. The causes of N₂O production during hot moments are not well understood under field conditions, but emerging evidence suggests that short-term fluctuations in soil oxygen (O₂) concentration can be critically important. We conducted high time-resolution field observations of O₂ and N₂O concentrations during hot moments in a dryland agricultural soil in Northern China. Three typical management and weather events, including irrigation (Irr.), fertilization coupled with irrigation (Fer.+Irr.) or with extreme precipitation (Fer.+Pre.), were observed. Soil O₂ and N₂O concentrations were measured hourly for 24 h immediately following events and measured daily for at least one week before and after the events. Soil moisture, temperature, and mineral N were simultaneously measured. Soil O₂ concentrations decreased rapidly within 4 h following irrigation in both the Irr. and Fer.+Irr. events. In the Fer.+Pre. event, soil O₂ depletion did not occur immediately following fertilization but began following subsequent continuous rainfall. The soil O₂ concentration dropped to as low as 0.2% (with the highest soil N₂O concentration of up to 180 ppmv) following the Fer.+Pre. event, but only fell to 11.7% and 13.6% after the Fer.+Irr. and Irr. events, which were associated with soil N₂O concentrations of 27 ppmv and 3 ppmv, respectively. During the hot moments of all three events, soil N₂O concentrations were negatively correlated with soil O₂ concentrations (r = −0.5, P < 0.01), showing a quadratic increase as soil O₂ concentrations declined. Our results provide new understanding of the rapid short response of N₂O production to O₂ dynamics driven by changes in soil environmental factors during hot moments. Such understanding helps improve soil management to avoid transitory O₂ depletion and reduce the risk of N₂O production.

The rise in the use of single-use plastics and personal protective equipment (PPE) has increased plastic waste in the marine environment. In this study, we surveyed the presence of PPE (face masks and gloves) discharged in 6 beaches along the coast of India. A total of 496 PPE were counted with an average density of 1.08 × 10⁻³ PPE m⁻². The PPE density found was comparable to previous studies. Face masks were the most recorded type of PPE (98.39%), with gloves accounting for only 1.61% of the total. However, a significant reduction in the appearance of PPE was recorded on all six beaches, likely due to the increase in vaccination rates. The most contaminated places were the beaches with recreational activities + fishing. It has been noticed that the lack of awareness of environmental pollution and the negligence of the population and the mismanagement of municipal waste are the main causes of beach pollution by PPE. This study confirms the potential threat of PPE to terrestrial and aquatic organisms of multiple taxa in India, but further studies are needed to quantify the impact of this type of waste on marine animals.

Marine debris (MD) is a serious environmental concern globally. Yet, few studies have reported on MD in sanctuary zones of the Indian Ocean. Consequently, coastal transects were conducted to determine MD quantity, composition and distribution at northern Ningaloo Marine Park, Western Australia. Debris density ranged between 0.004 and 0.02 items m⁻² with the greatest density near Exmouth township. Composition was predominantly plastic (61%) with fishing-related items (25.5%) and plastic fragments/remnants (16%) the most numerous overall. Land-based and general sourced MD accounted for 88% of all debris. Debris levels were significantly lower at sites with higher visitation and increased distance from access points. There was no significant difference between sanctuary and non-sanctuary zones. Although not immune to MD, this study suggests its remote location, environmental awareness and management strategies implemented at Ningaloo Marine Park may be key to its low MD levels.

China is one of the largest waste importers and producers in the world, with land-based discharges mainly from domestic sewage and industrial wastes being the main source of marine debris (MD) including three distributional types as stranding on the beach (BMD), floating on the water surface (FMD), and submerging into sediments (SMD). Fishery-related activities are also one of the main sources of marine debris: intensive aquaculture, fishing, and related household activities. Marine debris, showing different ways of leaching, degradation and fragmentation, can be ingested, incorporated and accumulated by marine organisms through the food chain, and ultimately pose risks to the ecological environment, economic benefits and human health. Comprehensive countermeasures, from awareness to practices and from the government to the public, are now being implemented in China and have achieved remarkable results especially in domestic waste incineration, but greater commitment and stronger execution are urgently required.

Visual pollution is the visible deterioration and negative aesthetic quality of the landscape. Erosion, marine wrack, litter, sewage, and beach driving are affecting the coastal scenery and are generating a visual pollution problem on the Rabigh coastal area, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This work provides the scenic evaluation of 31 coastal sites using the Coastal Scenery Evaluation System (CSES) to determine the current state of this situation and give management inputs. The CSES assesses values from a checklist of 18 physical and 8 human parameters and allows the calculation of a scenic evaluation index (D Value), which classifies coastal sites into five classes: Class I, usually natural areas of top scenic characteristics, to Class V, poor scenic natural areas with a higher impact of human interventions. Along the study area, three sites (9.7 %) appeared in Class II; five (16.1 %) in Class III; 15 (48.4 %) in Class IV, and eight sites (25.8 %) in Class V. Class I sites were not found in the study area. Assessment presented in this work provides a complete overview of the Rabigh coastal scenery and serves as a baseline for implementing management strategies to cope the visual pollution problem.

A ridge-to-reef framework was developed for 26 watersheds around Guam. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) data were collected for one year at the base of streams while coral and fish surveys were conducted on adjacent reefs. Two independent analyses revealed a similar 0.10 mg/l DIN threshold beyond which negative impacts to water quality and coral reefs existed. The influence of DIN was next partitioned with respect to a second primary stressor, fishing pressure. While coral diversity was negatively influenced by DIN, the cover of some stress-tolerant corals increased, such as Porites rus, making coral cover alone a poor indicator of watershed pollution. Less intuitive, DIN predicted increased food-fish biomass that was accounted for by generalist herbivores/detritivores, representing homogenized assemblages, while fishing pressure reduced biomass. Our DIN thresholds resonated with a similar study in American Samoa suggesting broader guidance for water quality legislation may be emerging.
