Heavy metal accumulation in aquatic organisms has been an important issue due to environmental pollution resulting from anthropogenic activities. In this study, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn in the selected fish species (Mullus barbatus, Solea solea, and Siganus rivulatus) from three consecutive bays (İskenderun, Mersin, and Antalya from North-Eastern Mediterranean Sea) were considered to provide some information on heavy metal accumulation level and assessment of their health risk on both general and fishermen populations. There were some significant differences inter- and intra- species/ tissues/bays. The stability in heavy metal accumulation in fish tissues varied and the most stable tissue for Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were determined as skin, muscle, liver, liver and, muscle, respectively. In general, the lowest heavy metal values were observed in the fish muscle. The Target Hazard Quotients (THQ) and Total Target Hazard Quotients (TTHQ) values based on muscle were not exceeded 1.00. Therefore, these results suggest that both general and fishermen populations are not subjected to the significant potential health risk from those bays.

The Black Sea is a semi-enclosed basin subject to major anthropogenic pressures, including marine litter and plastic pollution. Due to numerous large rivers draining into the basin and a population settled along the coast, the region could accumulate significant amounts of floating litter over time. Until now, only limited field data were available, and litter quantities and distribution remained unknown. In this study, floating marine macro litter (FMML) was assessed at the regional Black Sea scale for the first time, showing relatively high litter densities across the basin that reached a weighted mean of 81.5 items/km(2). Monitoring data revealed an accumulation of floating items offshore in the eastern part of the basin, resembling on a small scale a "garbage patch', where litter items were trapped, showing elevated densities in comparison to their surrounding areas. Most of these items were made of plastic materials (ca. 96%) and included large numbers of plastic and poly-styrene fragments of small size ranges (2.5-10 cm). Harmonised field data collection through consistent and regular monitoring programmes across the region is essential to establish baselines and thresholds for large scale assessment at international level.

Gillnets are among the most common fishing gears worldwide. They are often made of thin twine, which is prone to wear and tear, limiting the lifespan of the gillnet. This increases gillnet turnover, and consequently increased risk of gear discarding, gear loss, ghost fishing and marine pollution. This might be mitigated by increasing twine thickness, and thereby breaking strength. However, the tolerable increase in thickness for gillnet durability without compromising the catch efficiency is unknown. Therefore, this study conducted gillnet fishing trials under commercial conditions in the Northeast-Arctic cod gillnet fishery analysing and comparing ways of capture and efficiency between gillnets with two different twine thicknesses for two different mesh sizes. The results demonstrated that a 30 % increase in breaking strength and twine stiffness did not affect catch performance. Therefore, thicker gillnet twine can potentially reduce marine litter by plastic debris from damaged and lost gears without compromising catch performance. | publishedVersion

Numerical models point to the south-east Bay of Biscay as a convergence area for floating particles, including plastics. The few existing studies on plastic abundance in the area mainly focus on open waters and yet information on the coastal area is limited. To fill this gap, neustonic samples were taken along the coastal waters of the south-east Bay of Biscay (2017-2020) to define the spatial distribution of plastic abundances and composition. Results show an average plastic abundance of 739,395 +/- 2,625,271 items/km(2) (998 +/- 4338 g/km(2)). French waters were more affected, with five times higher plastic abundances than Spanish coasts. Microplastics represented 93 % of the total abundance of plastic items (28 % in weight), mesoplastics 7 % (26 %) and macroplastics 1 % (46 %). This study demonstrates that this area is a hotspot for plastic with levels in coastal waters similar to those in the Mediterranean Sea or other litter aggregation areas.

Plastic floating on the ocean surface represents about 1 % of all plastic in the ocean, despite the buoyancy of most plastics. Biofouling can help to sink debris, which could explain this discrepancy. A set of laboratory experiments was conducted to investigate biofilm-induced effects on the buoyancy of different plastic debris. Ten materials of different densities (buoyant/non-buoyant), sizes (micro/meso/macro), and shapes (irregular/spherical/cylindrical/ flat), including facemasks and cotton swabs, were evaluated. Biofilm was incubated in these materials from a few weeks to three months to investigate the effect of different growth levels on their buoyancy. Biofilm levels and rising/settling velocities were measured and compared at seven time-points. The results show a hindered buoyancy for solid materials, while hollow and open materials showed the opposite trend in early biofilm colonization stages. Longlining is a widely used fishing method. During longline fishing, some of the snoods connecting the hooks to the mainline are often lost at sea. Since snoods are made of nylon or polyester, lost snoods contribute to marine plastic pollution. Replacing nylon or polyester with a new material made of biodegradable plastics can potentially reduce macro- and microplastic pollution that is caused by lost snoods. In this study, we estimated the risk for snood loss in a longline fishery targeting haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus (Linnaeus, 1758)) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua (Linnaeus, 1758)) in Barents Sea. Further, we compared catch efficiency in this fishery for snoods made of biodegradable and nylon materials. No significant differences were found between the two materials. Therefore, catch efficiency does not represent a barrier for using biodegradable materials in snoods. | publishedVersion

peer reviewed | A study on Trace Elements (TE) from sea urchin gonads has been conducted in the western Mediterranean Sea. Contamination data were used to determine a Trace Method Pollution Index (TEPI). TE concentrations varied considerably depending on the location of the sampling stations. The results showed that five trace elements (Zn, Fe, As, Al, Cu) are ubiquitous. The geographical area considered (Corsica) represents an important range of environmental conditions and types of pressure that can be found in the western Mediterranean Sea. TEPI was used to classify the studied sites according to their degree of contamination and allowed reliable comparison of TE contamination between local and international sites. TE contamination of the western Mediterranean Seadisplayed a north-to-south gradient, from the Italian coasts down through the insular Corsican coasts to the north African littoral. Due to the increasing environmental pressure on the Mediterranean Sea, a regular monitoring of TE levels in marine organisms is necessary to prevent any further environmental deterioration.

International audience | Surface seawater, collected from three fishing harbors during different seasons of the years 2015, 2016 and 2017, were assessed for physico-chemical analyses. Results showed that seawater was mainly polluted by hydrocarbons and some heavy metals. Microbial communities' composition and abundance in the studied harbors were per-formed using molecular approaches. SSCP analysis indicated the presence of Bacteria, Archaea and Eucarya, with dominance of the bacterial domain. Illumina Miseq analysis revealed that the majority of the sequences were affiliated with Bacteria whereas Archaea were detected at low relative abundance. The bacterial community, dominated by Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Chloro-flexi phyla, are known to be involved in a variety of biodegradation/biotransformation processes including hydrocarbons degradation and heavy metals resistance. The main objectives of this study are to assess, for the first time, the organic/inorganic pollution in surface seawater of Kerkennah Islands harbors, and to explore the potential of next generation marine microbiome monitoring to achieve the planning coastal managing strategies worldwide.

International audience | Aquatic wildlife is exposed through trophic transfer of hazardous substances to several threats inducing physiological impairments. We aimed at assessing the impact of contamination in one of the hot spots of pollution along Mediterranean coasts, the gulf of Gabes in Tunisia, on Common tern Sterna hirundo, a piscivorous top predator bird. Firstly, we compared the reproductive effort of breeding adults through clutch size distribution in three sites with different levels of pollution. Then, a battery of genotoxicity and oxidative stress biomarkers was carried out to assess physiological impairments in chicks. While defense mechanisms showed a depletion, lipid peroxidation and genotoxicity increased significantly according to pollution level. The multi-biomarker approach used here, discriminated chicks according to contamination degree of their nesting sites. Increases in genotoxicity and oxidative stress were correlated to a decrease in chick body mass known to lead to long-term impacts on juvenile survival and recruitment in birds.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the 2019 and 2022 oil spill events that occurred off the coast of the State of Ceará, Northeastern Brazil. To further assess these mysterious oil spills, we investigated whether the oils stranded on the beaches of Ceará in 2019 and 2022 had the same origin, whether their compositional differences were due to weathering processes, and whether the materials from both were natural or industrially processed. We collected oil samples in October 2019 and January 2022, soon after their appearance on the beaches. We applied a forensic environmental geochemistry approach using both one-dimensional and two-dimensional gas chromatography to assess chemical composition. The collected material had characteristics of crude oil and not refined oils. In addition, the 2022 oil samples collected over 130 km of the east coast of Ceará had a similar chemical profile and were thus considered to originate from the same source. However, these oils had distinct biomarker profiles compared to those of the 2019 oils, including resistant terpanes and triaromatic steranes, thus excluding the hypothesis that the oil that reached the coast of Ceará in January 2022 is related to the tragedy that occurred in 2019. From a geochemical perspective, the oil released in 2019 is more thermally mature than that released in 2022, with both having source rocks with distinct types of organic matter and depositional environments. As the coast of Ceará has vast ecological diversity and Marine Protected Areas, the possibility of occasional oil spills in the area causing severe environmental pollution should be investigated from multiple perspectives, including forensic environmental geochemistry.
