This study assessed the environmental risk on coastal ecosystems posed by three phenolic compounds of special environmental and human health concern used in plastics and household products: bisphenol A (BPA), triclosan (TCS) and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP). These three chemicals are among the organic contaminants most frequently detected in wastewater. The most toxic compound tested was 4-NP, with 10% effective concentration at 11.1 μg L⁻¹ for Isochrysis galbana, 110.5 μg L⁻¹ for Mytilus galloprovincialis, 53.8 μg L⁻¹ for Paracentrotus lividus, and 29.0 μg L⁻¹ for Acartia clausi, followed by TCS (14.6 μg L⁻¹ for I. galbana, 149.8 μg L⁻¹ for M. galloprovincialis, 129.9 μg L⁻¹ for P. lividus, and 64.8 μg L⁻¹ for A. clausi). For all species tested, BPA was the less toxic chemical, with toxicity thresholds ranging between 400 and 1200 μg L⁻¹ except for A. clausi nauplii (186 μg L⁻¹). The relatively narrow range of variation in toxicity considering the broad physiological differences among the biological models used point at non-selective mechanisms of toxicity for these aromatic organics. Microalgae, the main primary producers in pelagic ecosystems, showed particularly high susceptibility to the chemicals tested. When the toxicity thresholds experimentally obtained were compared to the maximum environmental concentrations reported in coastal waters, the risk quotients obtained correspond to very low or low risk for BPA and TCS, and from low to high for 4-NP.

Naphthenic acids (NAs) account for 1–2% of crude oil and represent its main acidic component. However, the aquatoxic effects of NAs on marine phytoplankton and their ecological risks have remained largely unknown. Using the marine microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Platymonas helgolandica var. tsingtaoensis as the target, we studied the effects of NAs on their growth, cell morphology and physiological characteristics. The cell density decreased as the concentrations of NAs increased, indicating that they had an adverse effect on growth of the investigated algae in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy revealed NAs exposure caused damage such as deformed cells, shrunken surface and ruptured cell structures. Exposure to NAs at higher concentrations for 48 h significantly increased the content of chlorophyll (Chl) a and b in P. tricornutum, but decreased their levels in P. helgolandica var. tsingtaoensis. NAs with concentrations no higher than 4 mg/L gradually enhanced the Chl fluorescence (ChlF) parameters and decreased the ChlF parameters at higher concentrations for the two marine microalgae. Additionally, NAs induced hormesis on photosynthetic efficiency of the two microalgae and also have the species difference in their aquatic toxicity. Overall, the results of this study provide a better understanding of the physiological responses of phytoplankton and will enable better risk assessments of NAs.

Boscalid is one of the most frequently detected pesticides in main coastal estuaries in California, with concentrations as high as 36 μg/L. However, ecotoxicology information about boscalid to aquatic organisms is scarce. To investigate toxic effects and mechanisms of boscalid on freshwater algae Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), C. vulgaris were exposed to a range of boscalid concentrations (0, 0.8, 1.6, 2.4 and 3.2 mg/L) for 96 h to study the changes in photosynthetic pigment contents, responses of the antioxidant enzyme system and alterations in endogenous substances. Results indicated that the growth of algae and the content of chlorophyll and carotenoids were significantly inhibited by 1.6 mg/L boscalid. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative damage of C. vulgaris could be induced by boscalid, in accordance with significant changes in ROS levels and a series of antioxidant enzyme activities. Moreover, the alterations in endogenous substances showed that boscalid could affect photosynthesis and energy metabolism of C. vulgaris. These results demonstrated that boscalid could induce impacts on C. vulgaris mainly through disturbing the photosynthesis, oxidative damage and energy metabolism. The present study provided a better understanding of the negative effects and mechanisms of bosaclid in microalgae.

Climbazole (CBZ) is an antibacterial and antifungal agent widely used in personal care products. In this study, we investigated the interactions between climbazole (CBZ) and freshwater microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus (S. obliquus). Dose-effect relationships between CBZ concentrations and growth inhibitions or chlorophyll a content were observed. After 12 days of incubation, the algae density and chlorophyll a content in 2 mg/L treatment group was 56.6% and 15.8% of those in the control group, respectively. Biotransformation was the predominant way to remove CBZ in the culture solution, whereas the contribution of bioaccumulation and bioadsorption were negligible. More than 88% of CBZ was removed by S. obliquus across all treatments after 12 days of incubation, and the biotransformation of CBZ followed the first order kinetic model with half-lives of approximately 4.5 days at different treatments. CBZ-alcohol (CBZ-OH) was the only biotransformation product identified in algal solution. Moreover, the toxicity of biotransformation products was much lower than its corresponding precursor compound (CBZ). The results of this study revealed that S. obliquus might have a great impact on the environmental fates of CBZ and could be further applied to remove organic pollutants in aquatic environment.

Metal contaminants are rarely present in the environment individually, yet environmental quality guidelines are derived from single-metal toxicity data. Few metal mixture studies have investigated more than binary mixtures and many are at unrealistically high effect concentrations to freshwater organisms. This study investigates the toxicity of five metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) to the Antarctic marine microalgae Phaeocystis antarctica and Cryothecomonas armigera. Two mixtures were tested: (i) an equitoxic mixture of contaminants present at their single-metal EC10 concentrations, and (ii) an environmental mixture based on the ratio metal concentrations in a contaminated Antarctic marine bay.Observed toxicity, as chronic population growth rate inhibition, was compared to Independent Action (IA) and Concentration Addition (CA) predictions parameterised to use EC10 values. This allowed for the inclusion of metals with low toxicities. The biomarkers chlorophyll a fluorescence, cell size and complexity, and intracellular lipid concentrations were assessed to investigate possible mechanisms behind metal-mixture interactions.Both microalgae had similar responses to the equitoxic mixture: non-interactive by IA and antagonistic by CA. Toxicity from the environmental mixture was antagonistic by IA to P. antarctica; however, to C. armigera it was concentration-dependent with antagonism at low toxicities and synergism at high toxicities by both IA and CA. Differences in dissolved organic carbon production and detoxification mechanisms may be responsible for these responses and warrants further investigation.This study shows that mixture toxicity interactions can be ratio, species, and concentration dependent. The responses of the microalgae to different mixture ratios highlight the need to assess toxicity at environmentally realistic metal ratios. Parameterising IA and CA reference models to use EC10s allowed for the inclusion of metals at low effect concentrations, which may otherwise be ignored. Reference mixture models are generally suitable for predicting chronic toxicity of metals to these marine microalgae at environmentally realistic ratios and concentrations.

Harmful microalgal blooms are a threat to aquatic organisms, ecosystems and human health. Toxic dinoflagellates of the genus Alexandrium are known to produce paralytic shellfish toxins and to release bioactive extracellular compounds (BECs) with potent cytotoxic, hemolytic, ichtyotoxic and allelopathic activity. Negative allelochemical interactions refer to the chemicals that are released by the genus Alexandrium and that induce adverse effects on the physiology of co-occurring protists and predators. Releasing BECs gives the donor a competitive advantage that may help to form dense toxic blooms of phytoplankton. However BECs released by Alexandrium minutum are uncharacterized and it is impossible to quantify them using classical chemical methods. Allelochemical interactions are usually quantified through population growth inhibition or lytic-activity based bioassays using a secondary target organism. However these bioassays require time (for growth or microalgal counts) and/or are based on lethal effects. The use of pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) fluorometry has been widely used to assess the impact of environmental stressors on phytoplankton but rarely for allelochemical interactions. Here we evaluated the use of PAM and propose a rapid chlorophyll fluorescence based bioassay to quantify allelochemical BECs released from Alexandrium minutum. We used the ubiquitous diatom Chaetoceros muelleri as a target species. The bioassay, based on sub-lethal effects, quantifies allelochemical activity from different samples (filtrates, extracts in seawater) within a short period of time (2 h). This rapid bioassay will help investigate the role of allelochemical interactions in Alexandrium bloom establishment. It will also further our understanding of the potential relationship between allelochemical activities and other cytotoxic activities from BECs. While this bioassay was developed for the species A. minutum, it may be applicable to other species producing allelochemicals and may provide further insights into the role and impact of allelochemical interactions in forming dense algal blooms and structuring marine ecosystems.

Erythromycin is an antibiotic employed in the treatment of infections caused by Gram positive microorganisms and the increasing use has made it a contaminant of emerging concern in aqueous ecosystems. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO₂ NPs), which are known to have catalytic and antioxidant properties, have also become contaminants of emerging concern. Due to the high reactivity of CeO₂ NPs, they can interact with erythromycin magnifying their effects or on the other hand, considering the redox potential of CeO₂ NPs, it can alleviate the toxicity of erythromycin. The present study was carried out to assess the toxicity of both single compounds as well as mixed on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Phaeodactylum tricornutum (freshwater and marine microalgae respectively) employed as target species in ecotoxicological tests. Mechanisms of oxidative damage and those harmful to the photosynthetic apparatus were studied in order to know the toxic mechanisms of erythromycin and the joint effects with CeO₂ NPs. Results showed that erythromycin inhibited the microalgae population growth and effective quantum yield of PSII (E.Q.Y.) in both microalgae. However, the freshwater microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was more sensitive than the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Responses related to the photosynthetic apparatus such as E.Q.Y. was affected by the exposure to erythromycin of both microalgae, as chloroplasts are target organelle for this antibiotic.Mixed experiments (CeO₂ NPs + erythromycin) showed the protective role of CeO₂ NPs in both microalgae preventing erythromycin toxicity in toxicological responses such as the growth of the microalgae population and E.Q.Y.

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) has been widely used to control bacterial growth in reverse osmosis (RO) systems. However, MIT's toxicity on microalgae should be determined because residual MIT is concentrated into RO concentrate (ROC) and might have a severe impact on microalgae-based ROC treatment. This study investigated the tolerance of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 to MIT and revealed the mechanism of algal growth inhibition and toxicity resistance. Scenedesmus sp. LX1 was inhibited by MIT with a half-maximal effective concentration at 72 h (72 h-EC50) of 1.00 mg/L, but the strain recovered from the inhibition when its growth was not completely inhibited. It was observed that this inhibition's effect on subsequent growth was weak, and the removal of MIT was the primary reason for the recovery. Properly increasing the initial algal density significantly shortened the adaptation time for accelerated recovery in a MIT-containing culture. Photosynthesis damage by MIT was one of the primary reasons for growth inhibition, but microalgal cell respiration and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis were not completely inhibited, and the algae were still alive even when growth was completely inhibited, which was notably different from observations made with bacteria and fungi. The algae synthesized more chlorophyll, antioxidant enzymes of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and small molecules, such as reduced glutathione (GSH), to resist MIT poisoning. The microalgae-based process could treat the MIT-containing ROC, since MIT was added for only several hours a week in municipal wastewater reclamation RO processes, and the MIT average concentration was considerably lower than the maximum concentration that algae could tolerate.

A mobile pilot plant was set up in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in southwest Spain to address potential adverse effects of effluents as a whole contaminant, which are discharging into marine environments. Ruditapes philippinarum specimens were exposed to different effluent concentrations (50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, and 3.15%) during seven days. After effluent exposure, lysosomal membrane stability alterations (LMS), changes in the energy status storage (total lipids content (TLP) and in the mitochondrial electron transport (MET), inhibition of inflammatory mechanisms (cyclooxygenase activity (COX)), and neurotoxic effects (acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were determined in exposed organisms. Furthermore, potential toxic reduction in the effluent was analysed by the application of an additional microalgae tertiary treatment called photobiotreatment (PhtBio). Results after PhtBio confirmed the toxic effect reduction in exposed organisms. Neuroendocrine effects, alterations in energy budget and in lipid storage revealed alterations in clam's health status causing stress conditions after effluent exposure.

The widespread occurrence of microplastics (MP) in the marine environment is cause of increasing concerns about the safety of the exposed ecosystems. Although the effects associated to the MP uptake have been studied in most marine taxa, the knowledge about their sub-lethal impacts on early life stages of marine species is still limited. Here, we investigated the uptake/retention of 3-μm polystyrene MP by early stages of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, and the related effects on gut clearance, feeding efficiency, morphological and transcriptional parameters involved in embryo-larval development. Uptake measurements were performed on larvae at 48 h, 3, 6 and 9 days post fertilization (pf) after exposure to a range of 50–10,000 particles mL−1. At all tested pf periods, treatments resulted in a significant and linear increase of MP uptake with increasing concentrations, though levels measured at 48 h pf were significantly lower compared to 3–9 d pf. Ingested MP were retained up to 192 h in larvae's gut, suggesting a physical impact on digestive functions. No change was noted between the consumption of microalgae Nannochloropsis oculata by larvae when administered alone or in the presence of an identical concentration (2000 items mL−1) of MP. The exposure to 50–10,000 MP mL−1 did not alter the morphological development of mussel embryos; however, transcriptional alterations were observed at 50 and 500 MP mL−1, including the up-regulation of genes involved in shell biogenesis (extrapallial protein; carbonic anhydrase; chitin synthase) and immunomodulation (myticin C; mytilin B), and the inhibition of those coding for lysosomal enzymes (hexosaminidase; β-glucorinidase; catepsin-L). In conclusion, though not highlighting morphological or feeding abnormalities, data from this study revealed the onset of physical and transcriptional impairments induced by MP in mussel larvae, indicating sub-lethal impacts which could increase their vulnerability toward further environmental stressors.
