Six hydrophobic alkylphenolic compounds were investigated for the first time simultaneously in four different matrices in the Danube River. Maximum sediment concentrations were 2.83, 2.10, 0.28, and 0.035 mg kg⁻¹ for nonylphenol, nonylphenol monoethoxylate, nonylphenol diethoxylate and octylphenol. Maximum levels in suspended particulate matter (SPM) were 0.18, 0.12, 0.10, and 0.003 mg kg 1. No correlation between concentrations in SPM and sediments was found. Octylphenol monoethoxylate and octylphenol diethoxylate were recorded only in sediment at one location. In mussels and water only nonylphenol and octylphenol were found. Nonylphenol concentrations in mussels (up to 0.34 mg kg⁻¹) correlate with concentrations found in SPM and indicate a slight bioaccumulation. Concentrations in water were close to the limit of quantification. We assume in situ formation of nonylphenol monoethoxylate and nonylphenol in sediments at some locations. In some cases nonylphenol in sediments exceeded the provisional EU environmental quality standards.

Particles of spent antifouling paint collected from a marine boatyard were ground and subsequently administered to the filter-feeding bivalve, Mytilus edulis, maintained in static aquaria. Concentrations of Cu and Zn were measured in seawater throughout a 16 h feeding phase and a 24 h depuration phase, in rejected and egested particles collected during the respective phases, and in the organisms themselves at the end of the experiments. Concentrations and distributions of Cu and Zn in processed particles indicated that M. edulis was able to ingest paint particles, regardless of whether nutritionally viable silt was present, and no mechanism of particle discrimination was evident. Enrichment of Cu and Zn in the visceral mass of individuals and in the aqueous phase during depuration supported these assertions, although elevated concentrations in other compartments of the organism (e.g. shell, gill) suggested that biotic and abiotic uptake of aqueous metal was also important. Particles of antifouling paint enriched in Cu and Zn are ingested and digested by the marine bivalve M. edulis.

Ocean acidification may increase the risk of disease outbreaks that would challenge the future persistence of marine organisms if their immune system and capacity to produce vital structures for survival (e.g., byssus threads produced by bivalves) are compromised by acidified seawater. These potential adverse effects may be exacerbated by microplastic pollution, which is forecast to co-occur with ocean acidification in the future. Thus, we evaluated the impact of ocean acidification and microplastics on the health of a mussel species (Mytilus coruscus) by assessing its physiological performance, immunity and byssus properties. We found that ocean acidification and microplastics not only reduced hemocyte concentration and viability due to elevated oxidative stress, but also undermined phagocytic activity of hemocytes due to lowered energy budget of mussels, which was in turn caused by the reduced feeding performance and energy assimilation. Byssus quality (strength and extensibility) and production were also reduced by ocean acidification and microplastics. To increase the chance of survival with these stressors, the mussels prioritized the synthesis of some byssus proteins (Mfp-4 and Mfp-5) to help maintain adhesion to substrata. Nevertheless, our findings suggest that co-occurrence of ocean acidification and microplastic pollution would increase the susceptibility of bivalves to infectious diseases and dislodgement risk, thereby threatening their survival and undermining their ecological contributions to the community.

Mussels are suggested as bioindicators of marine microplastic pollution. However, they are selective in regards to accumulation of microplastics. To make studies more targeted and comparable, ultimately helping to determine the suitability of the mussel as a bioindicator species for microplastic exposure, we review the published literature that has directly or indirectly demonstrated particle selection in mussels. The reported difference between microplastic levels in mussel tissues and environmental matrices provides evidence for their selective uptake characteristics. Both the organ-specific fate characteristics of microplastics, and the different movement patterns of microplastics in the same organ, show that selective translocation processes take place. The selective elimination is reflected in multiple aspects which include (1) the different characteristics of microplastics in excretion and mussel body; (2) the different retention time of various microplastics in mussels; and (3) the tissue-specific change in the numbers of microplastics during the depuration process. This selectivity is affected by the characteristics of the microplastics, the environmental, or laboratory exposure concentrations, feeding status, and other factors. There are still many research gaps and contradictory viewpoints in this field due to this complexity. The current methodology needs improvement and a breakthrough in standardization.

Methylmercury accumulated at the top of aquatic food chains constitutes a toxicological risk to humans and other top predators. Biomagnification of methylmercury takes place among vertebrates at the higher trophic levels, but this process is less elucidated in benthic invertebrates at the lower trophic levels. Therefore, we investigated the accumulation from food and elimination of methylmercury and inorganic mercury in the benthic sea star Asterias rubens (L.) – a representative of trophic level ~3 - in laboratory experiments. Sea stars fed over 49 days with contaminated mussels (Mytilus edulis) accumulate methylmercury and inorganic mercury to the highest concentrations in the digestive glands, the pyloric caeca, less in stomach, gonad, tube feet, aboral body wall and not to detectable levels in the coelomic fluid. Concerning whole body contents, steady states were reached for both methylmercury and inorganic mercury during the 7-week feeding period and the sea stars reached approximately ½ and ¼ of the concentrations in the mussel food for the two mercury forms, respectively. Half-lives for the elimination of the two mercury forms varied between 45 and 173 days in a 140-d elimination period following the feeding period; inorganic mercury was eliminated faster than methylmercury. Examination of total mercury concentrations in field-collected sea stars confirmed this lack of trophic magnification in relation to the major food items, soft parts of molluscs. We suggest that mercury is not trophically magnified in sea stars 1) because they eliminate methylmercury faster than larger fish and decapod crustaceans and 2) maybe more importantly, because inorganic mercury with its faster elimination constitutes a larger fraction of the total mercury in the food at the lower trophic levels - as opposed to methylmercury which dominates at the higher trophic levels.

Intertidal bivalves are periodically exposed in air. It is tempting to speculate that the organisms would temporarily escape from contaminants when they are out of water and thus have lower risks. In this study, we tested this speculation by investigating cadmium (Cd) toxicokinetics in an intertidal mussel, Xenostrobus atratus, under the effects of tidal exposure using simulated tidal regimes. The uptake rate constant (kᵤ) of Cd ranged from 0.045 L g⁻¹ d⁻¹ to 0.109 L g⁻¹ d⁻¹, whereas the elimination rate constant (kₑ) of Cd ranged from 0.029 d⁻¹ to 0.091 d⁻¹. Cd bioaccumulation was slightly higher in the continuously immersed mussels than the alternately immersed mussels, but much lower than what would be expected if assuming bioaccumulation being proportional to immersion duration. Cd uptake was observed even when mussels were exposed in air, due to uptake of Cd dissolved in mantle cavity fluid and internalization of Cd adsorbed on mussel tissues. Overall, tidal height showed limited effects on Cd bioaccumulation, consistent with the trend of Cd concentrations found in X. atratus collected from different tidal heights. The mantle cavity uptake mechanism is expected to be applicable to other contaminants and bivalves, and should have important implications in risk assessments for intertidal environment.

Nowadays, environmental pollution by microplastics (<5 mm; MP) is a major issue. MP are contaminating marine organisms consumed by humans. This work studied MP contamination in two bivalve species of commercial interest: blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) sampled on the Channel coastlines (France). In parallel, 13 plastic additives and 27 hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) were quantified in bivalves flesh using SBSE-TD-GS-MS/MS to explore a possible relationship between their concentrations and MP contamination levels. MP were extracted using a 10% potassium hydroxide digestion method then identified by μ-Raman spectroscopy. The proportion of contaminated bivalves by MP ranged from 34 to 58%. Blue mussels and common cockles exhibited 0.76 ± 0.40 and 2.46 ± 1.16 MP/individual and between 0.15 ± 0.06 and 0.74 ± 0.35 MP/g of tissue wet weight. Some HOC and plastic additives were detected in bivalves. However, no significant Pearson or Spearman correlation was found between MP loads and plastic additives or HOC concentrations in bivalve tissues for the two species.

In the present study Mytilus galloprovincialis mussels were exposed for 28 days to three salinities: 30 (control), 25 and 35. Simultaneously, organisms at each salinity were exposed to either the antimicrobial agent Triclosan (TCS) or the pharmaceutical drug Diclofenac (DIC) at 1 μg/L. Salinity alone and exposure to PPCPs changed mussel's metabolic capacity and oxidative status, but no additive or synergetic effects resulting from the combined exposures were observed. Overall, the metabolic capacity of mussels was decreased when exposed to TCS and DIC under control salinity, which was less pronounced at salinities out of the control level. TCS had a notorious effect over glutathione peroxidase activity while DIC exposure enhanced catalase response. Such defence mechanisms were able to prevent cellular damage but still a clear reduction in GSH/GSSG ratio after PPCPs exposures indicates oxidative stress which could compromise bivalve's performance to further stressing events.

Lipophilic marine toxins in shellfish pose significant threats to the health of seafood consumers. To assess the contamination status of shellfish by lipophilic marine toxins in the Bohai Sea, nine species of shellfish periodically collected from five representative aquaculture zones throughout a year were analyzed with a method of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Lipophilic marine toxins, including okadaic acid (OA), dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1), pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2), yessotoxin (YTX), homo-yessotoxin (homo-YTX), azaspiracids (AZA2 and AZA3), gymnodimine (GYM), and 13-desmethyl spirolide C (13-DesMe-C), were detected in more than 95 percent of the shellfish samples. Toxins PTX2, YTX, 13-DesMe-C and GYM were predominant components detected in shellfish samples. Scallops, clams and mussels accumulated much higher level of lipophilic marine toxins compared to oysters. Toxin content in shellfish samples collected from different sampling locations showed site-specific seasonal variation patterns. High level of toxins was found during the stages from December to February and June to July in Hangu, while from March to April and August to September in Laishan. Some toxic algae, including Dinophysis acuminata, D. fortii, Prorocentrum lima, Gonyaulax spinifera and Lingulodinium polyedrum, were identified as potential origins of lipophilic marine toxins in the Bohai Sea. The results will offer a sound basis for monitoring marine toxins and protecting the health of seafood consumers.

The majority of plastics present in the marine environment are microplastics (MPs, <5 mm). Suspension filter feeders are susceptible species to MPs ingestion. Once ingested MPs can be eliminated packed in fecal pellets, or they can be accumulated within tissues, and likely be transferred along the food web. The research on MPs is hampered by the difficulty on their quantification and the lack of standardized methodologies. Indeed, limited information exits about the capacity of marine organisms to ingest, accumulate and eliminate MPs. In this work we investigated the uptake, elimination and accumulation of MPs (irregularly shaped particles of high density polyethylene, ≤22 μm) in mussel. Mussels were exposed to two concentrations of MPs (2 and 4 mm3 l−1), and their uptake, elimination and accumulation in digestive gland was investigated. The results showed that the uptake of MPs increased at the high concentration tested, and that mussels cleared MPs at the same extent than a food item (microalgae) of similar size. Small MPs (2–4 μm) were less efficiently cleared than the larger ones. Large MPs (>10 μm) were faster eliminated than the smaller ones. The global balance showed that after 6 days of depuration mussels eliminated ≈85% of the MPs cleared, and that ≈2–6% of the MPs cleared remained in the digestive gland, essentially those <6 μm. We recorded a long retention time for MPs, contrasting with the lower times assumed to be necessary to empty mussel's gut before quantifying MPs. Our study emphasized the gap of knowledge on the feeding behaviour of mussels in relation to MPs, and the necessity to investigate it in different marine species, and under different exposure scenarios.
