Assessing the chemical anthropocene – Development of the legacy pollution fingerprint in the North Sea during the last century

The North Sea and its coastal zones are heavily impacted by anthropogenic activities, which has resulted in significant chemical pollution ever since the beginning of the industrialization in Europe during the 19th century. In order to assess the chemical Anthropocene, natural archives, such as sediment cores, can serve as a valuable data source to reconstruct historical emission trends and to verify the effectiveness of changing environmental legislation. In this study, we investigated 90 contaminants covering inorganic and organic pollutant groups analyzed in a set of sediment cores taken in the North Seas' main sedimentation area (Skagerrak). We thereby develop a chemical pollution fingerprint that records the constant input of pollutants over time and illustrates their continued great relevance for the present. Additionally, samples were radiometrically dated and PAH and PCB levels in porewater were determined using equilibrium passive sampling. Furthermore, we elucidated the origin of lead (Pb) contamination utilizing non-traditional stable isotopic analysis. Our results reveal three main findings: 1. for all organic contaminant groups covered (PAHs, OCPs, PCBs, PBDEs and PFASs) as well as the elements lead (Pb) and titanium (Ti), determined concentrations decreased towards more recent deposited sediment. These decreasing trends could be linked to the time of introductions of restrictions and bans and therefor our results confirm, amongst possible other factors, the effectiveness of environmental legislation by revealing a successive change in contamination levels over the decades. 2. concentration trends for ΣPAH and ΣPCB measured in porewater correspond well with the ones found in sediment which suggests that this method can be a useful expansion to traditional bulk sediment analysis to determine the biologically available pollutant fraction. 3. Arsenic (As) concentrations were higher in younger sediment layers, potentially caused by emissions of corroded warfare material disposed in the study area after WW II.

Microplastics (<5 mm) are emerging pollutants in oceans worldwide. As such small particles are easily ingested, microplastics are found in numerous pelagic and benthic organisms. However, information on microplastics in rocky intertidal organisms and habitats is relatively scant. Therefore, we examined snails and water samples from wave-sheltered and wave-exposed rocky intertidal habitats in Helgoland (North Sea), Cap Ferrat and Giglio (Mediterranean) and Madeira (Atlantic Ocean) in 2019–2020 for microplastics. Furthermore, we examined snails from the same habitats in Helgoland, Cap Ferrat and Giglio in 2007–2009. In total, we performed 362 individual micro-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (μFTIR) measurements on the snails and water samples. While the snails contained 50 microplastics (composed of nine polymer types), the water samples contained 24 microplastics (comprising six polymer types). Microplastic load and polymer type composition in the snails were rather similar across locations, wave exposure and years. Also, microplastic load and polymer composition in the water samples were similar across locations and wave exposure. Moreover, snail and water microplastic loads were significantly correlated which indicates that snails are useful bioindicators for microplastic loads in rocky intertidal habitats. Interestingly, the majority of the microplastics consisted of paint chips that likely derived from ships. Overall, our study provides the first comprehensive microplastic record in rocky intertidal organisms across locations, wave exposure and years that can serve as a baseline to examine historic and future microplastic dynamics in rocky intertidal systems.

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are highly persistent chemicals, which pose a potential risk for aquatic wildlife due to their bioaccumulative behaviour and toxicological effects. Although the distribution of PFAS in marine environments has been studied worldwide, little is known on the contamination of PFAS in the southern North Sea. In the present study, the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) was studied in liver and muscle tissue of seven fish species and in whole-body tissue of two crustacean species, collected at 10 sites in the Belgian North Sea. Furthermore, the human and ecological health risks were examined. Overall, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was predominant in all matrices and other long-chain PFAS were frequently detected. Mean PFOS concentrations ranged from <LOQ to 107 ng/g (ww) in fish liver, from <LOQ to 24 ng/g ww in fish muscle and from 0.29 to 5.6 ng/g ww in crustaceans. Elevated perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTrDA) concentrations were detected in fish liver from the estuarine and coastal region (<LOQ-116 ng/g ww), indicating a specific point source of this compound. Based on stable isotope analysis, no distinctive trophic transfer patterns of PFAS could be identified which implies that the bioconcentration of PFAS from the surrounding abiotic environment is most likely dominating over the biomagnification in the studied biota. The consumption of commercially important species such as the brown shrimp (Crangon crangon), plaice (Pleuronecta platessa), sole (Solea solea) and whiting (Merlangus merlangus) might pose potential health risks if it exceeds 17 g/day, 18 g/day, 26 g/day and 43 g/day respectively. Most PFOS measurements did not exceed the QSbᵢₒₜₐ,ₕₕ of 9.1 ng/g ww, however, the benchmark of 33 ng/g ww targeting the protection of wildlife from secondary poisoning was exceeded for 43% and 28% of the samples in plaice and sole.

Different extraction methods have been proposed to study the ingestion of microplastics by marine organisms, including enzymatic digestion. While mussels have been the focus of research, crustaceans' enzymatic digestion has received little attention. An overlooked source of information for microplastic research is analysis of long-term time-series biotic samples. These collections are invaluable for the detection and monitoring of changes in ecosystems, especially those caused by anthropogenic factors. Here, crustacean larvae collected in two periods, 1985 and 2020, in the central North Sea were used to develop and optimise an effective and gentle enzymatic digestion method suitable for microplastic research. Sequential breakdown of these chitinaceous samples via a mechanical and surfactant (Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate 1% v/v) pre-treatment, followed by proteinase K (100 mU/mL) and chitinase (50 mU/mL) digestion, efficiently removed >96% of biomass of 1985 and 2020 samples. The optimised method was effective without interfering with the identification of naturally weathered microplastics via FTIR Spectroscopy.

Water transparency, commonly measured as Secchi disk depth (SDD), is essential for describing the optical properties of coastal waters. We proposed a regional linear corrected SDD estimation model based on the North Sea Mathematical Models for GOCI and the mechanical model developed by Lee et al. (2015) in the Jiaozhou Bay. Combined with the multiple variable linear regression analysis, the diurnal SDD variations of the bay inside and the bay mouth are controlled by the solar zenith angle (SZA) and tides. The bay outside mainly varies with SZA. From GOCI observations between 2011 and 2021, wind force influenced the entire area on the inner-annual SDD variations. It exhibits an increasing trend in the inter-annual dynamics, which was more stable inside the bay with an annual increase of 0.035 m, and air temperature was the most significant contribution. However, human activities cannot be ignored in causing water environment changes.

Underwater radiated noise from shipping is globally pervasive and can cause deleterious effects on marine life, ranging from behavioural responses to physiological effects. Acoustic modelling makes it possible to map this noise over large areas and long timescales, and to test mitigation scenarios such as ship speed reduction or spatial restrictions. However, such maps must be validated against measurements to ensure confidence in their predictions. This study carried out a multi-site validation of the monthly and annual shipping noise maps for 2019 produced as part of the Joint Monitoring of Ambient Noise in the North Sea (JOMOPANS) programme. Spectral, spatial, and temporal differences between predictions and measurements were analysed, with differences linked to uncertainty in model input data and additional sources of anthropogenic noise in the measurements. Validating shipping noise models in this way ensures they can be applied with confidence in future management decisions to address shipping noise pollution.

Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs) have been used in several offshore oil and gas production applications including as emulsifiers in drilling mud formulations, which may have resulted in their disposal to sea. Despite concern over the endocrine disrupting potential of their alkylphenol (AP) degradation products, information on the presence of AP/APEs in marine sediments in the vicinity of oil and gas production facilities is scarce. This paper presents the occurrence of AP/APEs in marine sediment in North Sea oil and gas fields. The concentrations of octylphenol, nonylphenol and their ethoxylates near offshore installations were broadly comparable to, or higher than those of coastal and estuarine point source discharges. When compared to environmental assessment criteria, the NPCA Class V threshold values for octylphenol and nonylphenol were exceeded within 100 m and 500 m of infrastructure respectively, with higher concentrations of AP/APEs reported in fields that came online prior to 1986.

Plastic pollution of our oceans from land-based sources and shipping spills raises concerns for marine ecosystems, maritime industries and human health. This paper examines the systems and processes in place in the case of plastic pollution due to a shipping spill in the North Sea and the instruments and mechanisms to hold polluters accountable. A desk-based analysis was conducted, and 11 expert interviews contextualised the desk findings. From the 263 reported incidents from 1917 to 2021, 39 % of the reported container loss cases occurred in, or near, the North Sea. Fragmented jurisdiction, frail and uncoordinated policies, aid the shipping sector to deflect responsibility. Around 62 % of the obstacles mentioned by the interviewees addressed governance, including, notably, the lack of international measures, and regulations on shipping routes to protect sensitive areas. The study also identifies the difficulty to enforce compensation for the damage made to ecosystems and biodiversity.

The accumulation of marine litter on coastal seabeds is influenced by various anthropogenic and environmental factors. To identify litter accumulation areas on the seafloor, it is necessary to understand the interaction of these parameters. This study analyses the seafloor litter occurrence in the southeastern North Sea, based on samples collected between October 2017 and March 2019. Litter data were combined with hydrographic, high-resolution in situ measurements and further geographic as well as anthropogenic factors for statistical analyses. Benthic litter showed a mean density of 2473 ± 3116 items km⁻², and plastics consisting mainly of fisheries-related items represented the majority of identified objects. The statistical analyses suggest that salinity and temperature gradients, the meridional bottom currents, as well as the distance of the station to the coastline have a significant effect on benthic litter abundance. Direct combination of litter sampling and hydrographic measurements can improve the understanding of seabed litter dynamics.
