Latitudinal difference in the molecular distributions of lipid compounds in the forest atmosphere in China

Lipids are important biogenic markers to indicate the sources and chemical process of aerosol particles in the atmosphere. To better understand the influences of biogenic and anthropogenic sources on forest aerosols, total suspended particles (TSP) were collected at Mt. Changbai, Shennongjia, and Xishuangbanna that are located at different climatic zones in northeastern, central and southwestern China. n-Alkanes, fatty acids and n-alcohols were detected in the forest aerosols based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The total concentrations of aliphatic compounds ranged from 15.3 ng m⁻³ to 566 ng m⁻³, and fatty acids were the most abundant (44–95%) followed by n-alkanes and n-alcohols. Low molecular weight- (LFAs) and unsaturated fatty acids (UnFAs) showed diurnal variation with higher concentrations during the nighttime in summer, indicating the potential impact from microbial activities on forest aerosols. The differences of oleic acid (C₁₈:₁) and linoleic acid (C₁₈:₂) concentrations between daytime and nighttime increased at lower latitude, indicating more intense photochemical degradation occurred at lower latitude regions. High levels of n-alkanes during daytime in summer with higher values of carbon preference indexes, combining the strong odd carbon number predominance with a maximum at C₂₇ or C₂₉, implied the high contributions of biogenic sources, e.g., higher plant waxes. In contrast, higher concentrations of low molecular weight n-alkanes were detected in winter forest aerosols. Levoglucosan showed a positive correlation (R² > 0.57) with high- and low molecular weight aliphatic compounds in Mt. Changbai, but such a correlation was not observed in Shennongjia and Xishuangbanna. These results suggest the significant influence of biomass burning in Mt. Changbai, and fossil fuel combustion might be another important anthropogenic source of forest aerosols. This study adds useful information to the current understanding of forest organic aerosols at different geographical locations in China.

Finding the potential environmental obesogens is crucial to explain the prevalence of obesity and the related pathologies. Increasing evidence has showed that many chemicals with endocrine disrupting effects can disturb lipid metabolism. Whether 4-hexylphenol (4-HP), a widely-used surfactant and a potential endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC), is associated to influence adipogenesis and hepatic lipid accumulation remained to be elucidated. In this study, both the 3T3-L1 differentiation model and oleic acid (OA)-treated HepG2 cells were used to investigate the effects of 4-HP on lipid metabolism, and the underlying estrogen receptor (ER)-involved mechanism was explored using MVLN assay, molecular docking simulation and the antagonist test. The results based on lipid droplet staining and triglyceride accumulation assay showed that 4-HP treatment promoted the adipogenic differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells and increased hepatic cellular OA accumulation in exposure concentration-dependent manners. The study on the elaborated transcription networks indicated that 4-HP activated peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) as well as the subsequent adipogenic gene program in 3T3-L1 cells. This chemical also induced the increase of OA uptake and decreases of de novo lipogenesis and fatty acid oxidation in HepG2 cells. The agonistic activity of 4-HP in triggering ER-mediated pathway was shown to correlate with its perturbation in lipid metabolism, as evidenced by the enhanced development of mature lipid-laden adipocytes and suppression of excessive hepatic lipid accumulation upon its co-treatment with ER antagonist. Altogether, these findings provide new insights into the potential health impacts of 4-HP exposure as it may relate to obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Despite growing concern about the occurrence of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems there is only rudimentary understanding of the pathways through which any adverse effects might occur. Here, we assess the effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs; <70 μm) on a common and widespread algal species, Chlorella sorokiniana. We used laboratory exposure to test the hypothesis that the lipids and fatty acids (FAs) are important molecules in the response reactions of algae to this pollutant. Cultivation with PS-MPs systematically reduced the concentration of essential linoleic acid (ALA, C18:3n-3) in C. sorokiniana, concomitantly increasing oleic acid (C18:1n-9). Among the storage triacylglycerols, palmitoleic and oleic acids increased at the expenses of two essential fatty acids, linoleic (LIN, C18:2n-6) and ALA, while PS-MPs had even more pronounced effects on the fatty acid and hydrocarbon composition of waxes and steryl esters. The FA composition of two major chloroplast galactolipids, monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG) and digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG), were affected implying changes in the conformational structure of photosynthetic complexes in ways that can impair the photosynthesis. These data reveal how exposure to polystyrene microplastics can modify the concentrations of lipid molecules that are important intrinsically in cell membranes, and hence the lipid bilayers that could form an important barrier between algal cellular compartments and plastics in the aquatic environment. Changes in lipid synthesis and fatty acid composition in algae could also have repercussions for food quality, growth and stressor resistance in primary consumers. We advocate further studies of microplastics effects on the lipid composition of primary producers, and of their potential propagation through aquatic food webs.

The well-known toxicity of conventional chemical oil spill dispersants demands the development of alternative and environmentally friendly dispersant formulations. Therefore, in the present study we have developed a pair of less toxic and green dispersants by combining lactonic sophorolipid (LS) biosurfactant individually with choline myristate and choline oleate ionic liquid surfactants. The aggregation behavior of resulted surfactant blends and their dispersion effectiveness was investigated using the baffled flask test. The introduction of long hydrophobic alkyl chain with unsaturation (attached to choline cation) provided synergistic interactions between the binary surfactant mixtures. The maximum dispersion effectiveness was found to be 78.23% for 80:20 (w/w) lactonic sophorolipid-choline myristate blends, and 81.15% for 70:30 (w/w) lactonic sophorolipid-choline oleate blends at the dispersant-to-oil ratio of 1:25 (v/v). The high dispersion effectiveness of lactonic sophorolipid-choline oleate between two developed blends is attributed to the stronger synergistic interactions between surfactants and slower desorption rate of blend from oil-water interface. The distribution of dispersed oil droplets at several DOR were evaluated and it was observed that oil droplets become smaller with increasing DOR. In addition, the acute toxicity analysis of developed formulations against zebra fish (Danio rerio) confirmed their non-toxic behavior with LC₅₀ values higher than 400 ppm after 96 h. Overall, the proposed new blends/formulations could effectively substitute the toxic and unsafe chemical dispersants.

Numerous studies have estimated the abundance of plastics in our oceans and warned of its threat to wildlife. However, mechanisms underlying its attractiveness to marine life remain unclear. Though visual similarities to food sources have been suggested, recent studies show that biofouled plastics release dimethyl sulfide which marine fauna mistake for food whilst foraging. Our study shows that the plastic additive oleamide (9-octadecenamide) attracts hermit crabs (Pagurus bernhardus). Respiration rate increases significantly in response to low concentrations of oleamide, and hermit crabs show a behavioral attraction comparable to their response to the feeding stimulant betaine. Oleamide has a striking resemblance to the necromone oleic acid, a chemical released by arthropods during decomposition. As scavengers, hermit crabs may misidentify oleamide as a food source, creating an olfactory trap. As such, our short communication demonstrates that additive leaching may play a significant role in the attraction of marine life to plastic.

To understand dispersal and assimilation of aquaculture waste subsidies in a naturally low-productivity environment, we applied a novel, rapid transmethylation technique to analyse sediment and biota fatty acid composition. This technique was initially validated at Atlantic salmon farms in Macquarie Harbour, Australia, where sediments were collected at farm and control locations. Subsequently, sediment, benthic polychaete and zooplankton were sampled at sites 0, 50, 250, 500 and 1000m distant from multiple cages. Results demonstrated an acute deposition zone up to 50m from cages and a diffuse zone extending 500m from cages. Changes in sediment concentration of linoleic acid, oleic acid and total fatty acids were effective tracers of farm deposition. Bacterial biomarkers indicated that aquaculture waste stimulates bacterial productivity in sediments, with elevated biomarker concentrations also detected in benthic polychaetes. Overall, fatty acid analysis was a sensitive technique to characterize the benthic footprint of aquaculture influence.

The concentrations of monosaccharide anhydrides (levoglucosan, mannosan, galactosan), monocarboxylic acids (alkanoic acids C7 – C20 and two unsaturated fatty acids, palmitoleic and oleic acids) and organic and elemental carbon in PM1 aerosol samples were measured in two cities of the Czech Republic (Brno and Šlapanice) in winter and summer seasons of 2009 and 2010.Mass concentrations of PM1 aerosols (determined by weighing filters with collected aerosol) were higher in winter than in summer in both 2009 and 2010, in Brno as well as in Šlapanice.Organic compounds were analysed by GC–MS. The sum of average atmospheric concentration of monosaccharide anhydrides (MAs) in PM1 aerosol in Brno and Šlapanice was 273 and 646 ng m−3 in winter and 20–42 ng m−3 in summer. The higher concentrations of MAs in PM1 aerosols in winter seasons indicate higher frequency of biomass combustion than in summer seasons. Levoglucosan was the most abundant monosaccharide anhydride. Contrary to MAs, the concentrations of majority monocarboxylic acids were higher in summer (153–221 ng m−3) than in winter (116–206 ng m−3) in both cities in 2009 and in 2010. Palmitic acid was the most abundant monocarboxylic acid.The concentrations of both organic (OC) and elemental (EC) carbon were higher in winter than in summer, which corresponds especially to higher biomass burning and coal combustion in the frame of residential heating within winter seasons. Mass concentrations of the analysed aerosol samples were counted, i.e., OCBB and ECBB (biomass burning), OCFF and ECFF (fossil fuel combustion), and OCBIO (biogenic sources).Higher concentrations of MAs and PM1, OC and EC in winter seasons, could be caused not only by larger emissions from biomass or coal combustion, but also by less dispersion due to different atmospheric conditions.

Larvicidal and repellent activity of N-methyl-1-adamantylamine and oleic acid a major derivative of bael tree ethanol leaf extracts against dengue mosquito vector and their biosafety on natural predator

Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa belongs to the family Rutaceae is generally known as “bael fruit tree” occuring across the south Asian countries. The current investigation screened the main derivatives from crude ethanolic extracts of the Bael tree leaf and evaluated activity effects on the larvae and adults of Aedes aegypti (L.) Dengue vector mosquito and a non-target aquatic predator. The GC-MS results showed that the peak area was found to be profound in N-methyl-1-adamantaneacetamide (N-M 1a) followed by oleic acid (OA) with 63.08 and 11.43% respectively. The larvicidal activity against the fourth instar larvae and the crude Ex-Am showed prominent mortality rate (93.60%) at the maximum dosage of 100 ppm. The mortality rate of N-M 1a and OA was occurred at 10 ppm (97.73%) and 12 ppm (95.4%). The repellent activity was found to be prominent at crude Ex-Am (50 ppm) as compared to the pure compounds (N-m 1a and OA) with maximum protection time up to 210 min. The non-target screening of Ex-Am, N-M 1a, and OA on mosquito predator Tx. splendens showed that they are scarcely toxic even at the maximum dosage of 1000 ppm (34.13%), 100 ppm (27.3%), and 120 ppm (31.3%) respectively. Thus, the present investigation clearly proved that the crude Ex-Am and their major derivatives Nm 1-a and OA showed their acute larval toxicity as well as potential mosquito repellent against the dengue mosquito and eco-safety against the mosquito predator.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term irrigation effect with industrial poultry wastewater on young olive trees (Olea europaea L. cv. Chemlali). Industrial poultry wastewater can be considered as a bio-fertilizer due to its richness in nutritive elements (SO₄²⁻, HCO₃⁻, total nitrogen, and K⁺). The physicochemical analysis of wastewater showed a high concentration of TSS, COD, BOD, COT, NO₃⁻, and conductivity. Measurements indicated that poultry wastewater enhanced plant growth, leaves dry matter, and ashes in comparison with tap water, as well as poultry wastewater diluted with tap water; however, a decrease in total soluble sugars (glucose and fructose) was detected in leaves. The determination of fatty acid profile of young olive trees leaves irrigated with poultry wastewater showed richness on saturated fatty acids in comparison with mono- and poly-unsaturated ones. In addition, oleic acid (C₁₈:₁) presented the lowest content in leaves of trees irrigated with poultry wastewater irrigation. According to those results, poultry wastewater lends itself to being a hydric alternative and at the same time a source of nutrients that can help fill the water deficit in semi-arid countries and avoid costly waste disposal for slaughterhouses.
